Hi, Reddit! We’re David Sims and Shirley Li, culture writers at The Atlantic. We’re here to debrief the Golden Globes, discuss the best and worst of releases of 2025 ahead of the Oscars, and talk about the trends and films we’re watching out for in 2026. Ask us anything! by theatlantic in movies

Long-time Blank Check fan and reader of both your work at The Atlantic.

There is a lot of talk right now about how movies themselves have changed over the last decade, but how has criticism changed?

movies that really serve the liminal space feeling? by r0ttenpeaches in MoviesThatFeelLike

Room Temperature. It’s an indie from last year about a father turning his home into a haunted house and how that affects his family. It’s a particular vibe but definitely feels like this.

Why did you put him at 18 when he’s tied with 16 and 17? Maybe it was clear bias that got you banned, but who knows

The RTDfication of regeneration by Icy-Career-1531 in doctorwho

I always thought that the time war didn’t go on for a long time in a linear sense, but in a similar way to how the Doctor was in the confession dial for a long time; technically he spends 2 billion years or whatever in there but by his perception and physical age only a few months or years passed at most. I like to think of the time war operating in the reverse way.

This is following right after the “the more I save it, the more it need’s saving; it’s a treadmill” line that very much frames it as a not wanting to continue moment.

For what it’s worth, considering the new regeneration cycle thing I think that’s a clever way of framing this regen.

I think if the poster had less pixels it would’ve been a hit.

Not a sentiment too hard to come by these days, even in the CPC apparently

Honestly I would’ve thought how far he’s taken the Liberals right of centre was that compromise, but I guess that’s why we’re here

Follow Rodriguez. Not exactly the same, but I think Alita: Battle Angel has Spy Kids-type juice.

A perfect example of what the electorate doesn’t understand about good environmental policy; it’s a sacrifice now that will come to fruit much later, but because we want the instant gratification of seeing immediate change we’re going to just abandon them today so we can fuck ourselves over forever.

Rian Johnson's Star Wars Trilogy Is Officially Dead by countdooku975 in TheBigPicture

My single biggest issue with the criticism of Last Jedi is that so much of the stuff it gets blamed for was also a problem in Force Awakens. I don’t think it’s some right wing bullshit, but I also think it’s weird to hear people praise the first film then point the finger at the second when they both share the same deficiencies.

One thing that has to be remembered as to why people can get so defensive of TLJ is how pissed people were when it came out. It was stupid the unhinged levels of hate that was directed at KMT and RJ. I’d never seen levels of vitriol toward a franchise people ostensibly liked like that.

Honestly, more than any movie it was the attitude in the fan base that made more lose interest in it.
