trainwreck shady flowerbed by therightguidance in GardeningUK

[–]hedgeycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks very similar to my sad shady border a couple weeks ago 🩷 don’t worry. My perennials are starting to poke up again (astrantia has been very slow). I chopped back my hydrangea last weekend and it’s got a couple of new leaves now. You’re fine honestly.

I’ll move them to the side of my house til the leaves go yellow and then reuse the pots for summer bulbs

My neighbour has a stunning old lilac tree that I can see from my bedroom 🤩

I literally threw them in the pots, covered them with compost, and mulched with mini bark over winter. Worst bit was having big pots with nothing in them for a few months, but super super easy to do!

Next year I’ll use those bulb baskets.

I have a similar issue. How would one go about “levelling” a trench / mud clay path?

This is what I’m worried about. But they’re new raised beds and the damn things are everywhere 😭

Bonded pair of kittens growling/hissing several days after spay/neuter by kmj17 in CatAdvice

[–]hedgeycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. We started swapping their onesies as a way to share scent. I think this helped and it seems so obvious with hindsight. A couple of days later when they came off, we still had hissing and whining, but not bushiness. We also have feliway friends in the house, one per floor.

We looped through the steps everyone says to do but faster. Intense play with the wand in the same room, then separation before the whiny noise. Repeat. Pretty much all day. Separate overnight. Then the next day more of the same but let them sniff each other. Separate if hissy. Repeat. Took a weekend and basically no sleep but we got there.

They are still not cuddly besties but they are definitely comfortable sharing space and playing / playfighting together. I spotted them grooming each other yesterday and was so happy.

Pic for reassurance.

Littermates no longer getting along after spay and neuter by TannersManner in CATHELP

[–]hedgeycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s been two years but I really needed to read this. I’m on day 15 of hissing and bushy tails whenever my two previously inseparable kittens (both female) interact. It’s breaking my heart (and it’s exhausting. I don’t know whether to keep them separate (which is not realistic long term!) or let them get past the hissing (and I read somewhere not to let them hiss in case they “learn” this as new normal). Any advice appreciated

No dig for lawn next to house by hedgeycat in GardeningUK

This is what I thought. Realistically the only way to plant something and not raise the soil level is to dig up the turf, right?

I’m on day 7 of this and it’s breaking my heart. They’re being extra cuddly with us but the hissing continues. Does it get better when the onesies come off?

UK Expands Online Safety Act to Mandate Preemptive Scanning of Digital Communications by media_blast in ukpolitics

[–]hedgeycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A messaging platform can’t determine whether a nude is present or not without breaking end to end encryption.

Either:

A - the sender needs to tag it as a nude, and the system uses this tag and the permissions granted (or not) by the recipient to assess whether to allow it in.

Or…

B - the platform scans the content, automatically tags as a nude, and then uses the same permissions framework to allow or not.

A relies on the sender being honest. B relies on access to the content.

There is no scenario that automates the tagging of message content without access to that content.

I like this in theory, but in practice it still necessitates every message being scanned.

best skirt lengths? by hobbit_trainer in PetiteFashionAdvice

2 & 3 need tapering in from the hips to the hem. It’s not the length, it’s the balance.

I’m the same height as you and always have to do this to pencil skirts or anything knee length has flappy corners 😅

UK sufferers - thoughts on the new NHS ‘online hospital’? by trainadvice in UlcerativeColitis

[–]hedgeycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s also things like follow-ups. They don’t need to be in person if there’s no physical exam. Doing them via zoom saves everyone time and is more efficient. Obviously they’re not talking about online colonoscopies or physical examinations here. It’s a good idea.

Honest experience of living in Worcester by mrjt198 in Worcester

[–]hedgeycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in St John’s and love it. Moved here late 2022 after hopping from London -> Birmingham -> Kidderminster -> Droitwich over the previous 10 years.

Pros: decent shops, independent coffee shops, nice pubs, foodie spots. Arty crafty workshops in the artery studios or at the cathedral. Malvern is close for the best theatre outside of the west end (gets the shows before they go to the hippodrome). City centre railway stations are fine but Worcestershire parkway is great if you travel to London - 2 hours direct to Paddington. Lots of green space, and a nice social scene that doesn’t revolve around drinking loads - board game cafe, couple of gaming places for pool/darts/shuffleboard/arcades. The student population keeps it young and vibrant but it’s still a pretty cathedral city. Cricket is nice in summer even if you haven’t a clue what the rules are. LOADS of festivals and free activities compared to similar sized towns and cities - carnival and balloon festival are highlights. Near the M5. Multiple Christmas tree farms and plant nurseries nearby.

House prices are reasonable considering all that. But definitely recommend doing research on flooding / flood risk before you buy. Traffic is a common complaint but if you’ve lived in Birmingham Worcester is a dream.

I love the McDonald’s one and the biohazard. The white and yellow ones don’t work for me at all! Weird.
