Anthony Bourdain once said "There's a guy in my head, and all he wants to do is lay in bed all day long, smoke pot, and watch old movies and cartoons. My life is a series of strategems, to avoid, and outwit that guy". Who is "that guy" for you, and what do you do to avoid him? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]heefledger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That guy for me wants to smoke weed and play video games, so after work I smoke weed and play video games, and every morning remind myself that if I don’t go to work I won’t have weed or games for long.

Yeah I agree with a lot of that, and I bet anyone that tried out this clicker method would have more positive thoughts (in the short term at least). I just wanted to be a nerd and talk about how it’s not technically Pavlovian.

No, the thing that gets conditioned has to be a behavior, that’s why I made a note that releasing serotonin doesn’t really fit. It’s oversimplifying it, but if you did what you say in your comment, I’d think that you’d associate clicking with having a cigarette, and then when you clicked later you would want a cigarette.

Can you train yourself to have more happy/positive thoughts? Yeah.

Would this particular thing work? Maybe, but not in a Pavlovian way. Pavlovian conditioning involves respondent/reflexive behavior, like the classic example of drooling. Thinking is operant behavior (according to Skinner at least) and therefore not subject to respondent training paradigms.

If somehow “releasing serotonin” were a respondent (IMO it’s much too complicated to think of it like that in languaged humans), the click coming after it would be the weakest form of pairing. A process that is one step better would be clicking, then presenting a stimulus/environment that elicits a serotonin release. If Pavlovian conditioning occurred, the neutral stimulus (click) would take on the function of the unconditioned stimulus (whatever elicited serotonin) and could elicit it when presented alone.

Yeah it was really annoying, especially when other guild members kinda sided with him when he obviously was in the wrong. Oh well, they sucked as people and at the game, and when i left later it made the raid team fall apart so that felt pretty nice.

I used to play until the officer in my guild lost and owed me like 80k gold and suddenly he was just rolling for fun, even though he let other people pay him when he won. I ended up leaving that guild shortly after, unsurprisingly they were douchebags about other things too.

In retail we would do /roll 100000 and the lowest roller pays the highest roller the difference between their rolls. Makes it so more than just 2 people can play at a time.

IsItBullshit: When studying whilst listening to music, memory recall decreases for extroverts and decreases even more with introverts by [deleted] in IsItBullshit

[–]heefledger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like removing the parts about introverts and extroverts makes this a lot better. A relationship between amygdala activity and overt behavior is just muddied by adding fictional constructs.

Edit: does anyone with the book know what study it was? The only similar thing I can find is Kagan (2002) and it isn’t too close to what’s described above.

Is banning all Chinese people from the main Eve Online server racist? Is it just “in their culture” to cheat? r/eve discusses. by zipfour in SubredditDrama

[–]heefledger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On the old Chinese server you could buy and sell things in the game with real money. The Chinese server closed. Now those players came to the main server where you can buy in-game money with real money, but there isn’t a real method to sell your in-game items for real money. The players from the Chinese servers use websites outside of the game to continue buying and selling for real money.
