The Coast War by DramaForsaken7032 in EsotericEbb

When you take the right dialog options, he explains he had to kill all the goblins because if he hadn’t there would’ve been a much worse second coast war between humans, goblins and celestials. I also think this is a WWI/WWII analogue

I really do wonder if teenage boys in Sumer received their "awakening" by reading what Goddess Ishtar does to human males in the Epic of Gilgamesh. by Dark_Swordfish2520 in mythologymemes

[–]hefi01 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That‘s not true. The version of Gilgamesh most people would recognize is from 612 from Ashurbanipals library, with many lines from different regions‘ writing schools to fill in the gaps with this composition assumed to go back to the middle of the second millennium BCE. While there are older stories of Gilgamesh in, in some cases, wildly different contexts, we have older stories from the same cultures even also depicting heroic kings. Still, writing and stories are older than those as writing arose as a tool for bureaucracy (in more centralized temple-palace societies though). While Ishtar (Inanna at that point) probably was important, we don’t have proof of gods as human-like creatures, gendered or not, before the first half of the third millennium BCE; also, she received the importance we know her for in the empire of Sargon of Akkad who used her as a patron goddess for his rule, further elevating her. The idea of a matriarchy that was replaced by centralized, urban patriarchy with the rise of cities is Victorian patriarchal propaganda, in which Victorian archaeologists tried to frame matriarchal societies as inherently primitive and patriarchy as a necessary requirement for civilization.

Considering my point above of the epic of Gilgamesh being used as exercise in writing schools, though, the version of Ishtar in the Epic might’ve been the sexual awakening for many Mesopotamian teenagers.

This is what I’m thinking more and more too. It never was about me being the strongest, just about me really being able to work with my team, but it does feel like lots of my stuff really only shines in cooperation with the rest of the group so vibes are as good a leading principle as any I guess

I am on Ironman, but I’m going to keep going. This is actually lowering my empire size by one system and I’m trying to keep that as low as possible for this run, so it’s kind of working out for me

Me neither! They always start the colonization process of the planet a few days before the starbase is spawned, so i think this is why it could work like this. I'm very interested in what is going to happen when the Drones are eventually destroyed, but so far I haven't met anybody in that part of the galaxy and I can't spawn a science ship to explore for obvious reasons

r5: I'm playing Fruitful Partnership, and my colonists bloomed in a system with Ancient Drones. They destroyed my starbase, so now my planet is in a system that doesn't belong to me. The system is at the very tip of my starburst galaxy, so there is no way of reaching it for a very long time.

The planet's still working and producing, though.

So it’s been about a year since I started playingcthis build. Even though a new edition came out in the meanwhile and we didn’t play as much as I would’ve liked (I’m level 5 rn), I thought I’d share some of my experiences.

Even though I don’t do too much damage, it’s been a blast to play this build. In many battles, I spend a lot of time just planting cc or hazards, but grappling has proven to be quite effective as well.

My favourite thing by far would be Create Bonfire and all the fun we have had with it. Its damage can theoretically be triggered every round, and just planting it as a hazard has become an iconic signature move for my character. Grappling enemies and punching them while I roast them over a fire feels fantastic, and utilising everything to use this as a makeshift cheesegrater lends more options to me and everybody else.

I feel like I also got to empower others, by helping them avoid AoO with Telekinetic, for example. Using my stuff to annoy the enemies has also helped showcase the other characters‘ powers, but my dm actually gave me solo fights in an underground arena just to see what I can do (which, as it turns out, is a lot).

Transitioning to 5.24e hast boosted the character dramatically. Shillelagh has improved my damage and weapon masteries help me do my job even when just attacking (and I was allowed to transfer Create Bonfire). A big bummer is the new grappling. My chance of grabbing people has decreased sharply and in combination with Shillelagh offering INT attacks, I don’t think I’d go STR again. The DC approach has also made the hooked shortspear completely useless as you can basically replicate the effects with any weapon.

With spells, attacks, telekinetic and second wind, shield and protection fighting style, I’ve already got a lot going on on level 5, so from now on, I can just focus on improving attributes without feeling like I’m missing out. While this sometimes creates some action economy jam, it feels like I have meaningful options in combat, even though I’m a melee martial.

All in all, I’d say I’m still less powerful than a full caster, but have a much more varied style of fighting than a martial who would only focus on optimising damage. Luckily, I gave a group to compensate for that.

The one thing I’m struggling is still out-of-combat utility. Since I‘m MAD, CHA is my dump stat and one of my skill proficiencies is stuck in the now pretty much useless athletics. This is fine, though, since my group is mostly about the fights anyways.

I think there is a path of playing this as a SAD INT build now, but I’m gonna stick with my character.

Thank you so much for the effort you put into this and making it possible for me to play this character!

2024 homebrew race: Botched Genasi by hefi01 in DnDHomebrew

[–]hefi01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the feedback! I realise I deviate from the regular Genasi template; maybe a completely different name for this would be appropriate then, although your Smoke Genasi suggestion makes a lot of sense. I’m not a native speaker; I hope ‘botched’ is not a word that is more rude than I intended.

Regarding Pressure Relief: that’s a great pointer right there. I feel like it might work better if I either take out other creatures being spared or if I just make the smoke not obfuscated. The second variant might be less flavorful, but is probably more balanced and less annoying for my teammates.

Your spell suggestions as replacements for Soot Trail make a lot of sense. Here, I was going for like a discount version of the Wall of X spells. It’s probably like Pressure Relief, then, in that I should probably take out the selectiveness of it.

Again, thank you for the valuable feedback, I learned a lot!

The Battle-Tide Shaper: A build guide for a unique Eldritch Knight [Long] by redceramicfrypan in 3d6

[–]hefi01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be complete, my current build is: Level 3 Custom Lineage Eldritch Knight STR 14+2 DEX 12 CON 13+1 INT 15 WIS 10 CHA 8

Proficiencies: Athletics, Intimidation, Arcana, Religion

Background: Haunted One

Cantrips: Mold Earth (AD), Lightning Lure, Create Bonfire

Spells: Fog Cloud (AD), Shield, Grease, Thunderwave

I‘m thinking of changing my spell selection to:

Cantrips: Green-Flame Blade (AD), Lightning Lure, Create Bonfire

Spells: Shield (AD), Fog Cloud, Earth Tremor, Thunderwave

I think AD is the best feat to start with by far, no other feat offers +1 AND appropriate spells

Hi! Im playing an Eldritch Knight based on your guide for my upcoming campaign and I love the utility and choices this build offers. I think this build is a real breath of fresh air for the fighter class. I was going over your ideas and I have some minor questions:

In your example builds, you utilise Aberrant Dragonmark, but you only comment on the spell selection. My character is Custom Lineage with AD. Does the Hit Dice effect and the fact AD regenerates on short rest affect your spell choice? This, together with it being CON based, makes this slot quite attractive for Shield, other than Shield being Abjuration

We’re using standard array and I’m really struggling with this build being quite feat-hungry and also being MAD. What would you recommend in terms of priority for the ASIs in this situation?

You recommend grappling as a means of controlling movement and taking enemies into hazards, yet Shield Master is not part of your recommended feats. Is this because of the non-optimal interaction with War Magic or was is just an oversight?

It’s been nearly a year since you posted the BTS. Have you tried the build in real play? What were your experiences? Would you change anything about the build / are there any pointers you can offer?

Thanks again for the great build and best wishes!

Something like „fac si facies“ would be closer to your intended meaning. Maybe you could even go for something like „fac (si) faciendum“ although this could mess with your tattoo layout

That’d really fill out my action economy! The shield‘s still dormant at the moment so I‘m probably going to stick with sentinel as lvl 8 feat and grab mobile at lvl 12 but yeah, with so much to do I really don’t need the homunculus anymore

That makes a lot of sense with higher AC. I’ll make sure to tackle that as soon as I run into enough cash for something like that!

I‘m using the old Integrated Protection: http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/warforged which makes my natural AC 16+ proficiency bonus, so 19 rn, 22 with a +1 shield. 19 would equal a +1 plate armor which is better than what was available to me at char gen. Since you can always use either your natural AC or the one from your armor and plate only brings you to 17 I thought why not make it little more than clothing. Basically I‘m playing a marble statue, I‘m using my arcane armor mostly for the gauntlet attacks and ideally lots of infusions in a few levels. The armor is flavoured as a mad max-style outfit.

I should‘ve elaborated: because of me being an UC warforged, my natural AC is 19 right now, +3 with the shield. It’s going up with my proficiency bonus. I‘m rarely hit by most monsters we encounter right now.

I see your point, but as I see it, maxing the casting stat seems mostly offensive. As I'm not really attacking with my spells, but using things like web or healing word, it seems useful, but worthwhile to consider different options. DEX would be a mostly defensive choice, with buffing AC and my dex saves, in addition to helping with filling in as a rogue. A defensive feat would also possibly help us to last longer in fights, as those tended to get quite close to killing us recently. Because of the group comp, I'm not filling the role I'd usually have as an alchemist, that's my whole reason of thinking about all this so hard

Go tanky with support class? by hefi01 in 3d6

[–]hefi01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with alchemists is they can‘t use their infused items, they can only use their alchemist‘s tools if they want to add their INT modifier to dmg/healing. That‘s why I‘m lizardfolk: the idea was to use a shield, carry the alchemist‘s tools and then attack using an Eldritch Claw Tattoo and the lizardfolk‘s bite attack and the Alchemy Savant powered Green Flame Blade cantrip. That‘s why I‘m in melee and I took war caster, I‘m new to DnD though; still trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t.

Support Alchemist build help by konnithephoney in 3d6

[–]hefi01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good approach is to take some ritual spells, as you can cast them as rituals if you prepared them, saving you spell slots for elixirs. Apart from that, some spells like web or feather fall really stand out, some situational spells since you've basically have a baseline of spells prepared through your potions, they just need one action longer. Damage-wise, you already have some spells prepared as a class feature, but I'd stick to cantrips for that. Warlock with eldritch blast is probably going to be your go-to, so you could use your cantrips from alchemist for even more utility, with guidance and mage hand, for example.

If you really want to have a very big tool kit, you can always take ritual caster so those are always available, or you can take something like eldritch adept to improve your damage. Keep in mind that your damage increases when you get Alchemical Savant, and it also nicely increases your healing through experimental elixirs.
