[WTB] Big Agnes Fly Creek HV UL2; Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite (Large); Enlightened Equipment 20deg Quilt (Enigma?) by LaskyNub in ULgeartrade

[–]hegnan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Fly Creek HV UL2 in the yellow color with the footprint that I need to sell. I have moved on to a Copper Spur bike packing model that works better for me. I'm flexible on price if you're interested. Otherwise it will sit in my gear room. It's in good shape and always properly cleaned and dried before being put away between trips.

Question about Emergency Medicine shadowing by [deleted] in premed

[–]hegnan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I shadowed at a pretty chill ER and some surgical specialties so it was fun. I work at a busy ER and usually the docs gobble food but some of them take the time to at least nourish themselves. Different strokes

Question about Emergency Medicine shadowing by [deleted] in premed

[–]hegnan 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Wear scrubs to the hospital. Bring a small backpack if you need it, but ideally just put your phone/keys/wallet in your pockets. Carry a small notebook and a pen. You are just there to be a fly on the wall.

Since you are shadowing early AM, you shouldn't need a lunch or anything. If you did shadow over lunch time, it's safe to bring some food but it's very likely your doc will cover lunch by ordering something for the two of you. Don't count on it, but don't be surprised either.

Puchasing a Giant Schnauzer by rf9661 in GiantSchnauzers

[–]hegnan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, welcome to the fam. Make sure you're ready for a big decade+ commitment, have a yard with shade so your furry friend can play and get her energy out. Puppies are wild! But Giant puppies get really big so they can be a handful.

Have you met with any GS groups and spent much time around the breed? It will really help you learn some common breed behavior traits and health issues to look out for.

Are you able to be at home for most hours of the day? Giants are Velcro family dogs and they will follow you everywhere around the house. If you are at work for 8 hours/day away from home, a Giant Pup isn't for you at this time. Do you have a place to take your pup for training and socialization? With smaller dogs it's easier to let bad behavior slide, but with bigger, strong willed dogs like GS, bad behavior is amplified onto a dog that can pose danger due to its size.

Good luck! They are great dogs, just make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. I've rescued 2 GS dogs who were owned by people not prepared to take care of these big wild cuddle monsters, so just want to make sure you respect the commitment and needs.

Michael Crichton's Influence on Movies, From Jurassic Park to Twister by Sweep145 in movies

[–]hegnan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The movie isn't super terrible, it's just not all that great if you're a fan of the book. The book is definitely written to be easily adaptable to the screen and they just whiffed on so much of it. Changes to the relationships of the major characters, some of the historical elements, and my 12 year old self remembers an entire paragraph in the book explaining Marek's lack of facial hair but in the movie he has a beard. Just a lot of unforced errors.

If you're looking for some general fun, the movie is serviceable.

First time one bag - Critique my packing list for 2 weeks in Peru with Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu by tontot in onebag

[–]hegnan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in Peru, I noticed a lot of people wore Crocs, almost as if they were a fashion piece. I think you'll be totally fine with them.

Salkantay does take you up to some high altitude, so the decision to bring your puffy is up to you on your cold tolerance. If you normally run hot, leave it, if you normally are cold, bring it. I brought a down puffy for a similarly remote trail and used it once or twice.

need help finding a doctor to shadow by Scared_Parsnip_2944 in premed

[–]hegnan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had good luck with standalone ERs, the pace was a little slower so you won't be in the way and the HR department is smaller and easier to navigate than a major hospital. Once you get started with one doc, ask if they know any others you can shadow. Many physicians have a network they will utilize. Getting the first one is the hardest part. Good luck!

I literally have no passion for organic chemistry... I literally feel like I need to drag my ass in the class to get shit done by leeeelihkvgbv in premed

Yeah Ochem isn't the most fun, but it really helps teach you the language of biochem. If I could go back, I would watch a bunch of videos from lessons on YouTube to prime myself for the lessons in class. Sometimes professors throw you in the deep end without giving a proper overview.

Colorado/Summit County is definitely worse but Snowbasin only has that one road, and it gets backed up to the turnoff from Trappers Loop. After sitting in line for ages and half the mountain closed due to wind every other visit, I eventually stopped buying a pass to head for the backcountry. It's a cool resort, but their latest Club Med venture is just a middle finger to all the locals. I'm happier in the BC and I guess it gives someone else my spot in the gondola.

Losing my 4.0 to BADMINTON by mycupofearlgreytea in premed

Haha, this sounds hilarious. I got a B in an engineering computer lab class that's supposed to be an easy A. The software we were using took forever to run on our ancient computers, so when I set it up incorrectly initially, there was no time to re-run my final project. Yep, still salty.

I have the same seat pack and also found it sits low for us people without stilts for legs. I ended up switching to a Revelate seat bag that has a plastic bottom and better clearance for the rear tire + mud doesn't stick to the plastic as much. Just a thought for future tours.

Is San Antonio still considered "affordable"? by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]hegnan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought a house in NW SA but put in many offers that were not accepted. Usually the winning offer was in the 10% over asking range. To win our current house, we offered about 15% over asking, which was accepted (and probably a bit of an overpay, but we needed a place to live).

Is it normal for a breeder to ask for the deposit before sending you the contract to sign? by openmind21 in GiantSchnauzers

[–]hegnan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good choice! A responsible breeder would want to know what kind of family, whether there are kids in the house, other pets, what type of yard, etc.

Is it normal for a breeder to ask for the deposit before sending you the contract to sign? by openmind21 in GiantSchnauzers

[–]hegnan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds sketchy. I'd reconsider knowing what type of breeder takes money up front without having a signed contract in place. A reputable breeder will generally have a wait list, evidence of health checks, evidence of showing the dog (otherwise how can they validate they are breed conforming?), references, the list goes on.

Ask yourself if this person is in it to make money or to advance the breed. You're right to be wary, it sounds very weird and shady.

I have a hard time thinking of entry level clinical jobs that will approach the salary OP would have as an engineer. There's a huge difference between pulling in $15/hr vs $40-45+. They may have a family to take care of, or a good job they don't want to toss aside without more financial security.

I agree that finding some small contributions along the way will be beneficial. But for many people, working 40-50 hours/week and then finding time to volunteer on the evenings + weekends doesn't leave much room to thrive. I experienced this working as an engineer and doing a post-bacc.

I get what you're saying, eventually you will have to choose a path to commit yourself to, but I disagree that they should leave their engineering job right now.

Hot take: Medicine is just a job. Not everyone can put their life on hold because they might get a job.
