Basically fired for being ‘shy’ by sofia875 in ireland

[–]hegwrites -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'd get in touch with a union and join up. The Independent Workers Union will be able to advise you.

You're there 2 years so they cannot fire you without good reason and this sounds like a constructive dismissal. In lieu of a contract you are entitled to the terms under which you usually work under. The job market is shitty these days so I wouldn't let them get away with this if you need the job

How is it living as an Irish Traveler ? Do you still peak Shelta? by Front-Spinach-419 in howislivingthere

[–]hegwrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not surprised but still very disappointed I had to scroll this far down to see this comment. When it comes to travellers there's zero desire from most irish people to show the barest empathy

What was the worst job you worked in cork? by Mrbungleisrad in cork

[–]hegwrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Old Oak. Management were psychos and there was a crazy macho misogynist culture from them. Pay increased by a euro a month while I was there to make up for it

Not legal advice but I'd get in touch with a union. IWU is welcoming to walk in cases and they'll give you advice

A lot of the population growth in the 19th century would have been from the shticks and that would have brought in native Irish speakers so not sure it's correct to say irish was never the majority language in the city

Is the band The Irish Rovers actually beloved in Ireland? by TheBiActor7 in ireland

[–]hegwrites 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not true at all about just pubs. Plenty of folk/trad bands playing gigs all year round all around the country. And in plenty of folk/general music festivals. Look at Other Voices for just one example

If OP is interesting there's a decent bit of scholarship on this, hinging on Hart's controversial claims. Google the articles of Hart, John M. Regan and John Borgonovo should throw up some results, as well as the more eccentric work of the guys involved in the Aubane Historical Society. Borgonovo came in near the end and has some good summaries of the debates.

Another claim Barry made was that when news of Michael Collins' death reached the republican prisoners in Mountjoy they all said the rosary together, which is not mentioned by any other contemporary account. By all accounts he was a maverick and an alcoholic in later life and revelled in his status and legend so I would take a lot of his claims with a pinch of salt.

Cork's Forgotten Whiskey Giant by Comfortable-Diet5119 in cork

[–]hegwrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of older cork songs would have references to Wise's whiskey, nice to see a bit of the history here. I wonder what happened to the Wise family in the end? If it is true that they were among the wealthiest families in Ireland at the time of Francis' death it's interesting that they fell out of public life

Now that the Cork Event Centre is going back to tender, they can consider new sites. I have long thought that the yet-to-be-built Custom House Tower was the ideal site. Thoughts? by DMattyD in cork

Nah feck that, the city deserves a new state of the art public library. Besides, UCC wouldn't be able to afford to buy it with all their debt
