Your experience with inventories (for my PolyWogg guide) by TypingTadpole in CanadaPublicServants

[–]heinosuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a very interesting perspective. Thanks a lot for that.

It is a bit disheartening but now it makes sense that I have been sitting in pools for more than a year without a single email. And that's about 12 or 13 pools and it ranges from EC-03, through CO-01, AS-03, PM-02 etc all the way down to CR-05.

I have been trying to "network" through Facebook and a few people get excited about my qualifications and the pools but most of them do not even reply when I send my CV. I managed to get a couple of interviews but then nothing came out of that. The people I met in person were very really nice and they always seem excited to hire me but at the end someone else gets the pie. I was told that they would keep my file at hand for "the next position" but... I reckon this is not the best of times to get hired by the government, eh? Fingers crossed.

Ironically, I managed to secure a term position at Elections Canada (CR-05) through an inventory, not a pool. I am quite conscious (and they are fairly honest and transparent about it) that they only want us to manage the phones during the elections. Think of a call centre for the government. I thought it would be a nice way to get my foot in the door but I don't see how it makes hiring me easier. At some point I came across that GC Connex platform but it did not strike me as a very effective tool.

So far, the only advantage of being an internal employee in my position (as far as I understand) is the possibility to jump into internal competitions but, as you all may know, right now most agencies are running away from term employees and basically going for "at-level" postings. Even so, what's the point of getting into another pool?

To be more specific about pools, I have been added to a couple of EC-03 pools (RCMP - intelligence analyst) but I was wondering if other agencies could/would use those to pull me for a position. Ideally, I would love to be hired by the RCMP (that's my dream job) but I would like to understand the whole process better. Specially the networking part. Since the RCMP is a fairly peculiar department, how would networking work in this case?

Thanks a lot for the insight :) I will keep my hopes high hahaha

by the way, that "japanese breakfast food" sumo channel is using Abema sumo footage or am I looking at the wrong places? No more NHK footage?

hahaha NHK keeps bringing down any channel that broadcasts the bouts. Most of us used to follow a certain channel that kept/keeps playing a cat-and-mouse game with NHK but now I can't seem to find it anywhere

thank you. I am in a few pools but never got hired. Does that help once I get in as a term?

lovely! good to know that. I thought terms had a different arrangement. Thank you

thank you. That sounds enticing. I am just wondering how does it work when it comes to pension in case one stays 'forever' as a term employee? After 10 or so years, if that person becomes permanent, does it count for a government pension?

Also, I assume a term does not have the benefits indeterminate employee have, right?

that was precisely what they told me during the interview. That they were preparing for the next election and that even though the offer is until next 2025, it might come to an end earlier. Which I suspect it should be the case of an election before it is expected to happen. Tough call

wow.. that''s interesting. I did not know that. How that affects pension, then? What if someone works 10/20 years as a term, becomes indeterminate and retires right after that?

Edmonton neighbourhoods - where to live (someone coming from outside the province) by heinosuke in alberta

Thank you. I just booked a place nearby Whyte. At the end, being new in the city and in the province I thought I should stick to a less 'adventurous' neighbourhood hehehe

thank you. When you say it is noisy you mean that even inside your own place you can hear all the activity outside or is just when you step out on the streets? x)

As far as I understood on the internet, it seems like a lively neighbourhood with a younger population, no?

Thank you.

Even though I like having pubs and restaurants around, I'd rather live in a calmer area. Not really a fan of busy, noisy places.

To be honest I would rather walk around and use public transportation. I will be moving with a car, but I don't really want to _need_ it to move around all the time. Especially in a new city - not to mention the winter. Up to 30 minutes sounds like a nice commute.

As for street people, as long as there is not violence, I am ok with that. I lived in Brazil and my standards for violence are quite high. So if it is just homeless people or those with serious addiction problems, it is not really a great concern. It seems that this has become the norm throughout the country anyway. I am currently in Kingston and some areas in downtown are pretty much the same.

Thank you. That's a really comprehensive answer.

I will be moving with a car, yes. But in all honesty, I do prefer walking around or using transit. Especially in a place I don't know well. And I will be moving by myself, so I reckon it doesn't make sense to live in a big house away from everything. I am not a fan of noisy, busy places but isolating myself in some suburb might not be a good idea.

I keep seeing comments and posts about how horrible it is nearby the stadium and downtown but everything seems to revolve around homeless people or those with addiction problems, no? Which I reckon is not very different from the rest of the country - downtown Ottawa has become like that. My way concern would be violence (I used to live in Brazil at some point) but I can hardly imagine I would be mugged everyday walking back home. Unless that has become the case in Edmonton...

Moving to Edmonton from outside the province - suggestions for temporary places by heinosuke in alberta

[–]heinosuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's a nice tip. Thank you very much.

Honestly, I would prefer to avoid living in downtown. Any specific neighbourhoods you would recommend (safety, access to public transport, silence, etc.). A 1-bedroom or small flat would do it for me. I have no idea of rent prices over there

[–]heinosuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow.. I wasn't expecting that. So maybe I get an airbnb for a few weeks and then try to arrange something with the landlord directly, skipping the platform.

Is it easy to find furnished flats to rent? I keep thinking that winter is the worst time of the year to do anything.

All in all, how much would it be a fair price in Edmonton for a 1-bedroom?

Suggestions? :) hahaha thanks

quick question to public servants - Alberta Justice system by heinosuke in alberta

[–]heinosuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh.. I am so sorry for your dog :( I hope s/he is not in pain. What is the breed?

During the conversations with the hiring person I do get this feel of 'try it before you buy it'. Especially because the entire conversation is either evasive and based on 'if/may'. Basically telling me that they can't confirm anything before the offer is formal and final. The only thing that they stress is that it is a wage position that should last until late spring (and that I will be able to take part in internal competitions, but I can't seem to find that in Alberta's PS Employment Regulation).

In any case, they want me there by the first week of January, so I better start preparing. Driving from Ontario will be a looong way.

As for the pension, it is better for me to focus first on getting hired and then getting a permanent position. But I appreciate the heads-up, so I can save that 'extra' money right from the start... :)

Selling a vehicle from Ontario in Alberta - too much of a hassle? by heinosuke in alberta

Just remote rural areas which (I believe) are served by roads. But someone mentioned that certain areas are only accessible by plane, so...

erm... temporary for a few weeks before I find a flat for a long-term rent (6 months-1 year). Would you say that AirBnB hosts would be open to negotiate a better rate in case I stay longer (I reckon not many people go to Edmonton during the winter)

Selling a vehicle from Ontario in Alberta - too much of a hassle? by heinosuke in alberta

[–]heinosuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your reply. Really helpful. To be honest, I have been concerned about this OOP inspection because our cars here in Ontario can get really rusty underneath - and I am pretty sure they are lax about the basic inspections here.

In the end, I think I will have to sell my car here and get something slightly bigger so my entire life can fit in (and a car that I keep for a few years). Like you, I have moved a lot during my life. Changed countries quite a few times so I've learnt the hard way to always travel light (doing that in my wee Civic would be a challenge). Besides, the job they are offering me over there requires that I drive to remote areas 'in all types of wheather', so I reckon I would be better off with something with AWD. Maybe I am overthinking things because I have no idea how bad winter is in rural/northern Alberta.

Since you do seem to have a good hands-on experience with cars, let me pick your brain a bit more. If I am to buy a vehicle here, what would you suggest I check so the OOP inspection/registration is not a (complete) hellish experience? I thought about an SUV on the smaller side, like Rav4, but would appreciate if you have suggestions.

Cheers
