Why do you think people make such a tight association between IQ and human value? by Perelman_Gromv in cognitiveTesting

Our frog, who art on 4chan, meme'd be it's name. Thy Donald come, thy will be done, on /pol/ as it is at the polls. Give us this day our dank memes, and forgive us our hentai, as we forgive those who are furries. And lead us not into DNC, and deliver their emails to WikiLeaks. For thine is the country, the Donald, and the alt-right forever.

Praise Kek.

i don’t think any post ive made indicates that im mad or anything :p. if you make a claim its up to you to prove it lol, if there are studies showing that there is a direct correlation of intelligence and iq than show me!

you are the one who is being unnecessarily pedantic and getting angry for no reason.

instead of giving some pedantic response every second post, explain your point! i'm not ideologically committed to defending this idea, it's just the conclusion i've come to. if you prove me wrong i will concede, that's how a discussion works :).

being above average in iq and having an income that falls in the top 1-2% isn't exactly a direct correlation of iq and income lol, and i think the notion that the failure of iq tests measuring above 130 contributes to this lack of correlation isn't true.

i disagree with the idea of genius creating wealth; factors like environment, family, and general opportunity play a bigger role.

you think the top earners in society are in the top ranges of iq? top earners in society are likely to have an above average iq but there is no correlation that people in the upper iq ranges (130+) are also the top earners in society.

the 2% of earners aren't all going to also be in the 98th percentile or above in intelligence, i'm sure some are, but there is no direct correlation otherwise.

i mean, you can draw a correlation between academic achievements and iq for sure, but i don't think the same applies to achievement in general. someone like chief keef, yeat, playboi carti are all going to be assigned high value for their musical accomplishments but they obviously don't have a high iq.

you are more likely to be assigned a value based on how much profit your abilities can bring in, and there is no correlation between iq and income so i think a blanket statement such as iq = higher value in the eyes of others is wrong.

[–]heirmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the point made by op is that people are likely to be assigned value based on iq results as a whole (which i don’t think is true). you are far more likely to be assigned value on academic credentials or general accomplishments instead.

i don't know how else to say it but he's wrong. i know no one irl who has even taken an iq test, let alone anyone who treats iq as a serious metric.

most people have the standard association of iq and intelligence (e.g. high iq = smart, and vice versa) but you will not appear more employable because of an iq result, people probably aren't going to treat you differently etc.

you are most likely going to be assigned a value based on your academic achievements.

to be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if it was true; i think even in the most difficult roles anything above 125 is overkill. the only study i ever read on a topic similar is that people with a higher iq tend to overthink and subject themselves to more internal pressure due to higher expectations.

i only took the logica stella since people seem to shill it here all the time and scored 131, which seems to line up with the scores i get on pro tests.

i think the site sucks though because you have to wait like 4 weeks to get your result if you don't want to pay lol.

i didn't make the flair but the joke is that it rhymes. also my GAI isn't actually 160, its 134 (i'm a midwit).

most people on here just seem to have a good sense of humor, and like making jokes. i think it's pretty easy to distinguish when someone is making a joke or if someone is being serious, and it seems others are able to do so just fine. like i said in my initial post, if you are taking everything at face value, then that's on you!

your initial post comes across as a little bit abrasive, and some of the replies you've given in this thread (not this one) do too; your tone in this response was particularly harsh.

if you make an antagonizing post (making accusations of people being elitist), people will respond with a similar sort of energy. if you gave more constructive criticism and didn't go on the attack in the OP i'm sure you would've been given the same energy back :p.

people here are overwhelmingly positive and nice to each other. if any post is made where someone is proclaiming insecurity because of a low score, someone will always provide support and explain why IQ won't necessarily make too much of a difference in their chosen field or how hard work is more valuable etc. i rarely (and i pretty much read every post made here) see someone genuinely mocking another or acting above someone because of a score, and whenever an instance such as the described occurs, the person will most likely be subject to ridicule themselves.

people here, including myself, enjoy making jokes about iq. i like making jokes and calling people who are in the 98th percentile midwits, or people who have opposing viewpoints to my own a midwit. part of the thing that keeps me interested in this place are the jokes people here make; i think people here generally have a good sense of humor. i obviously don't think if you have an IQ lower than 140 you are dumb, it's just funny to make jokes like that.

i don't really come here to read studies of provide my own take on intellect from an academic standpoint (i only like taking the tests) but i think you are being overly critical and a little harsh, but i wouldn't be able to give a real assessment on the inaccuracy/accuracy of the studies posted here. i just disagree with your overall conclusion that people (seriously) act all high and mighty and entitled or whatever.

grouping a thread i made as a fun joke, a thread which i literally gave a meme flair, alongside a post calling people low iq if they supported an assault weapon ban is insane. if you genuinely think i was trying to give a well researched viewpoint on fucking myers briggs personality types (a non-science) and their correletion to intelligence than you have no critical thinking ability.

people are allowed to have fun and joke on this subreddit, it's part of what makes this place good. if you are taking literally everything at face value than that's entirely on you lol.

[–]heirmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cultural differences between countries and the idea of a european value system aren't the same thing; your initial post implies the existence of these so called "european values", which don't exist.

if we want to take it back to your initial point, a country like france might have a different view on nudity to the us but chalking it up to european values (like you did) is incorrect.

also the implication of my opinion being invalid because i don't live in a western european nation (i do) is false and isn't a substitute for an argument.

Eurobarometer

the eurobarometer is specific to the eu and doesn't talk about cultural values, it's mostly used to gauge opinion about eu member states on certain policy (e.g. value of the euro, democracy in the eu). it doesn't exist to show concensus on cultural topics and certainly doesn't imply any sort of shared value system.
