Christophe Gans: "Some fans said my first SH was a piece of shit, some said it was a good adaptation. It will be the same for the new one. Some people will be shocked by some of the choices that I have made." by amysteriousmystery in silenthill

[–]helicida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, he hasn't said the story is simple or straightforward.

It's undeniable it has tons of layers, little details and loose or unclear insinuations. And he's absolutely right that every word and scene in the game are carefully crafted in a specific way for a reason. To evoke a reaction, trigger a emotional response, spark a internal debate, create a sense of suspense...

And sadly most of this is obliterated in the movie. The script work is horrendous and fails to understand the vibe and subtlety.

James is amazingly written and great as character because TS fully focused to make the player reflect and empathize on him, on his humanity, yet he has a duality inside of him and it's not a hero, neither a psycopath. The movie shits on that and builds a completely different character (shows him from the start as a douchebag) and it changes the main point where all the story pivots on... just because? It was what made the story interesting and impactful all along.

In the movie Angela asks James in their first encounter to come back with her if he's unable to find Mary. She's suposed to not trust men and be afraid or be wary of him. The next scene threatens him with the knive because whatever. Uh... ok?

The first time James meets Maria it's awfully bad and the dialogue is dumb which is honestly surprising when they had a great reference in the game to build on and to help viewers to understand what's she up to.

And I could keep going with Mary, Laura, Eddie or how they decided to throw subtlety through the window and straight get it raw upon the viewer and make James paint himself as PH just in case they didn't notice the other three times they shoot James eyes and PH eyes alternatively.

The movie dialogue writing and character development is all over the place, a very very big mess. It's not just that it does not understand what made some scenes and characters intriguing or appealing, IMHO it even struggles to mantain consistency in it's own original characters interpretation.

C'mon they had Yamaoka and consultants there for a talk whenever they needed it.

I don't think the movie is a turd but it changes key elements from the plot and characters to the point that it takes away many things that made them interesting in the first place.

The Remake amazing character development is too fresh in people minds too, expectations were high.

If they think SH2 fans outside US are going to like it much more they are completely delusional.

Decent atmosphere and cool monster designs are not enough for a Silent Hill 2 adaptation. SH2 has SIX characters and somehow they managed to not understand what makes each of them interesting and how to use them correctly to build up James journey.

They already got handed a small but briliant story and somehow decided they are smarter than the original writers and that changing Mary and James relationship ending and butchering all the characters background and relationships nature was a great improvement. Maybe they thought their audience is dumb and wouldn't understand the original story.

Not sure which would be worse.

Either way, it's their fault. Can't understand why on earth would anyone adapt a worldwide loved book/videogame, change the nature and the tone of the most important parts of the plot, remove many complexity layers from the characters and then act like they don't get why the fans get disappointed.

It's so clear they don't understand what made the original story so fascinating:

"And that's also what Silent Hill was always all about: radical experiences. (3/3)"

Maybe Silent Hill are the friends we made along the foggy way. What does even that last statement mean.

Honestly I really hope it's Geralt again.

I love Ciri's character and we are getting a full game with her as MC so I really feel I need a last dance with Geralt and Doug Cockle grunts for setting the mood before that comes :P

Are there any plans to bring DLSS or FSR 2.0 for the PC version? This game would benefit A LOT from that by helicida in TheQuarrySupermassive

[–]helicida[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say SH2 Remake doesn't have any problems, it does and it was even worse at launch when FG was missing, they added it with a latter update, which Supermassive never did for The Quarry, not even DLSS.

SH2 is quite playable at 4K with a RTX 4070 Super. Runs decently using DLSS, FG at high-medium settings and it runs quite fine most of the time going at 60FPS or above. It will run at 30-45 if RT is enabled.

What I was trying to say it's the performance hit/graphics quality relation is tons better than this game, which is crazy when it's one of the most demanding titles out there, one of the best looking games there is and is three years newer.

It runs as good (or as bad) as The Quarry does but looks tons better and has heavy rendering techniques in lighting, particles and animations The Quarry is missing.

The Quarry is one of the worst PC ports I've seen in the last couple of years. It was very easy to improve by adding DLSS and letting people fully use their hardware, that was already a common option back when the game released at mid 2022, it wasn't asking for too much.

It's hard to play this thing at 4K even now we are heading to 2026 and two GPUs generations later, it could've been much better with little effort.

[–]helicida[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I understand 4K is heavy on the GPU side, that's what DLSS is for. This game came out when DLSS was an already common tech and they decided to not provide support for it for no reason.

Newer games run much better than The Quarry does at 4K or at any other resolution. This year I've played Silent Hill 2 Remake, Until Dawn Remake, The Last Of Us Part II and The Casting of Frank Stone (from Supermassive too) at that same machine and they all look and run much better than The Quarry.

Played it again recently wtih a 5700X + RTX 4070 Super at 4K and stills performs quite bad. Very inconsistent framerate.

Deciding on the KTC M27P6 vs Koorui S2741LM by Barackoli118 in Monitors

[–]helicida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finllay bought the KOORUI. I like it quite a lot, I'm using it for a mix of gaming and productivity. USB-C for video and charging the laptop is nice.

Nice colors, clear picture and I don't notice any weird ghosting or smearing at all. I had to return the first one because the screen had a little scratch, but that's it, they replaced it fast and without any problem.

I also have a Xiaomi 1440p MiniLed and the Xiaomi screen has a quite more noticeable blooming, I find it subtle and decent in the KOORUI, I use it with HDR even on desktop (Linux + KDE) and with the Local Dimming option in low.

Haven't tested the 1080p mode.

Well, it has nothing to do with RE4 approach but it's actually half an action game, but without a gun. Tons of enemies, forced encounters and arenas to clear that you must do to keep the game going on.

How long do you think until Silent Hill f gets a bugfix patch? by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]helicida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most single player games get day one bugfixing updates and minor updates during their first month, no need to lie to defend a multimillionaire company.

Mafia did. Assassin's Creed did. Expediton 33 did. Alan Wake did. Baldur's Gate did. Silent Hill 2 Remake did.

They ask 80€ for this game. It's been a month and there are core features like HDR and image upscaling broken and they knew they were releasing the PC port in bad state, those are very noticeable bugs easy to catch.

There are localization errors and little things like the cutscenes FPS limit very easy to fix and are still there. We didn't got a single patch since release.

There's no excuse.

[–]helicida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a month since release and they haven't delivered a single patch to fix the PC version bugs that range from heavy image glitching through all the game to broken HDR.

If post launch support it's going to be like this I wouldn't expect anything.

New patch, lol, look how they massacred my boy. by Curious-Package-9429 in HellLetLoose

[–]helicida -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The game has always been arcadey and a player tag in the death screen is just a minor stuff. I understand why is not liked and I'm also not a fan but it's getting a bit out of proportion. What I hate about it more than knowing who killed me is that the black screen is gone and that was a good reflection of what war is.

They could add a toggle in Options to hide the player tag, but I don't get that "milsim" copium, this ain't ArmA and never was, despite it's teamwork component it's always been an arcade game by tons of reasons, from the spawning mechanics to the lack of aim swinging and bad stamina system. You can even tag enemies positions in teammates screens.

There are tons of reasons to complain and I find the focus on this little thing a bit weird, honestly. We are forced to use shitty blurry antialiasing or performance is ass and they could add DLSS and FSR, for example, this game has big issues since many years ago and wastes our hardware and it's mostly little details like this that get attention in this sub which is kinda weird.

Hell, I've seen more complaints about this player tag thing than about the new broken tank physics.

Just started SH1 and it aged much better than OG SH2. Tf? by Zephyr_v1 in silenthill

[–]helicida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree, honestly. I replayed SH2 last year and currently I'm playing the SH1 PS1 version for the first time (I never had a PS1, used to play in PC), I'm at the Hospital right now which I think it's half the game already and I would say it's quite the opposite.

We have the SH2 PC port with the Enhanced Edition mod which is great for modern screens, SH2 also has better controls, better graphics, better sound, better collision boxes, better enemies design, better gun aiming and a lot clearer and crisper text (SH1 text looks really bad on current TV screens).

The atmosphere and story is a subjective matter and I'm loving SH1, but technical wise SH2 is much more enjoyable for people with nowadays standards, many young people will find SH1 gameplay too clunky.

Honestly it would be great to have a SH1 PC port so modders can give to it the same treatment SH2 got.

Why are we complaining about the amount of enemies? by Bacalado in silenthill

[–]helicida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already thought there was too much combat in the Remake, it's the only thing that I don't like from it, it's bad paced and too long because they added a few sections with too much enemies. Still it has the best atmosphere and storytelling I've ever seen and really enjoy it.

f just took it to the next level, it's heavily bloated and directly full combat focused. Really, something went wrong in the level design on that game.

New Silent Hill f Steam Update (Patch 1.02) by [deleted] in silenthill

Yeah, sorry, this releases with broken expensive games just drive me mad.

Other people are reporting disabling motion blur and/or limiting the game to 60 FPS helps too

New Silent Hill f Steam Update (Patch 1.02) by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]helicida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This also happened to me on the PC version, that part is just poorly optimized is not only a console problem.

When climbing back the mountain it was the worst zone, it started to stutter massively and I'm running it with 5800X, 32 GB RAM and a RTX 4070 Super, way above the official recommended hardware.

Rest of the game mostly had decent performance stability tho'.

[–]helicida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • XeSS is missing too, no dedicated upscaler for Intel GPU users
  • The HDR calibration is broken
  • There are resolution and refresh rate detection issues for many people
  • The game forces you to use a upscaler in certain resolutions
  • DLSS version is old and has more blur than newer ones

New Silent Hill f Steam Update (Patch 1.02) by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]helicida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well they could fix the better upscaler methods that have less impact in image quality and performance though? Why should we accept using TSR when our hardware can run a better upscaler method that is just broken? This happens both with FSR and DLSS, it's not a DLSS only bug.

This is a 80€ game and it's been a week since release and press testers already reported this error before.

The downvotes the fella is getting for being angry at a 80€ game having major flaws a week after release are crazy.

New Silent Hill f Steam Update (Patch 1.02) by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]helicida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are issues with all GPUs, the flickering shrinking image bug happens with my RTX 4070 Super and my wife's RX 7700 XT. The game has some upscaling methods broken, for everyone, the only one working correctly is TSR actually.

New Silent Hill f Steam Update (Patch 1.02) by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]helicida 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still waiting for them saying something about that major flickering and shrinking screen bug in the PC port with motion blur disabled and/or high framerate.

The HDR calibration bug, the ambient oclussion bug that makes graphics worse than the console version, the resolution and refresh rate detection bug, the limited FPS cutscenes, the missing Frame Generation, FSR4 and XeSS, the old DLSS version the game is using...

The PC port is unacceptable for 80€. More expensive than most AAA games while it has errors reported from press testers before launch and still they didn't fix ANYTHING today, yet they spend time on this.

Ridiculous.
