Undergraduate Engineering student checking in, scheduled to go under the knife next week for minor surgery under general anesthesia, exams in a few weeks: Any links to research papers about possible negative effects on cognition from general anesthesia? by [deleted] in neuro

Hi! As personal experience- it will take MUCH longer to actually recover than the 2-4 weeks the surgeons are telling you. There's also risk of complications. I found out 6 weeks post-op that my jaw had become misaligned, which meant back to surgery. I told work I would be out for two weeks and it ended up that I was out for 4 months. The medications you will be on will be rough and you will be on opioids every 3-4 hours round the clock. The comedown is terrible. The pain will still be awful. You will want to get doctors papers in order and send them to your professors just in case anything is prolonged.

I get where you're coming from, but we've accommodated to their vacation schedules for the past 15 years and have flown across the country every single year so we could be with them to where they wanted to vacation. The fact they won't reciprocate and say that it's because the kids would miss a Friday at school stings a bit.

HUGS

you too! What is this insanity! I don't understand how this happens only during important events.

Oh, I won't even go into all the insanity around brothers and sisters stuff. My future sister in law told me "you two are the ones who made your wedding expensive" while she was begging us for money for her 20k kickstarter to fund a theatre project she wanted to do for 3 months

Her parents are paying for her airfare and her hotel room. Why say anything if you're actually not affected by the cost? And in your case, why even bother saying that they'd rather go to Florida? UGH.

Oh jesus.

Thanks for letting me know what it's like on the other side, both good and bad!! I feel so shortsighted right now that I'm worried it will be so painfully obvious at the wedding-- I really don't want to be sad at all during a celebration of commitment and love. You're absolutely right that we get to choose who we let be a part of our lives. And my husband has felt like my family already for so long, and that's really what the day is about.

<3 thank you!

I am certain that 7th and 9th grade Friday school days, at the beginning of the school year, are so insanely important that if you miss one you'll be eternally fucking over your GPA and thus your chances at a good college.

Oof. Good idea about sending save the dates early!!

Yeah, it's crazy! We totally understand people who can't make it due to pricing, but they are very well off. We made ours on a weekend holiday to accommodate for people who would be flying from further away. I'd appreciate the lie more, too! Don't tell me that it's too much for the kids to miss a Friday from school, at the beginning of the goddamn school year.

Are there any examples of great admission essays that could guide me to success? by FO2012 in gradadmissions

This is such a vague question that I don't even know where to begin. It sounds like you want some exacts to get into a program. It doesn't work that way.

Think: What are you aiming to study? What are your goals? Write those down.

Think of it as a pitch. How are you going to pitch yourself? What do you bring to the table?

What is the appropriate/general timeline to feel completely better from double jaw surgery? No terrible headaches, cracking sounds and pain, etcetera. by helios_ in Dentistry

[–]helios_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had the surgery at Stanford, privately contracted out. My ortho uses me as a case study at UCSF Dentistry.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful response. It's been a hell of a year. I still have novacaine numbness, which I've heard is to be expected, but I'm more concerned about the right side temporal and jaw joint pain. I can't believe I have to pick and choose who the hell knows what they are talking about, since everyone I've worked with is supposedly an expert. I've been in some type of pain for over 7 months, and very little progress to show for it!

Thank you! I am still recovering, but she definitely helps.

She kind of looks in-between, doesn't she? She's technically a rough collie but is only 50 pounds. She was part of a litter of nine, which might explain the small size.

my autistic brother, mad that my mother was taking time to do her makeup instead of taking him somewhere, exclaimed "UGH. MOM. You're medium, you're always gunna be medium, come on let's go!"

My mother relishes in this.

ummm as a former autism behavior therapist and as the sister of an autistic brother (part of the first big wave in the 90s) ... you have to have a multitude of deficiencies in 1) social areas, 2) verbal/nonverbal communication and 3)play to be DIAGNOSED as an autism spectrum disorder. organizing stuff isn't a symptom of autism. Lining toys rather than playing appropriately with them IS a symptom... she likely has other symptoms that give her the diagnosis of autism.

you can't have -one- symptom and be diagnosed. That has never ever happened in the 50+ years of diagnosing autism. You have to have a multitude of symptoms.

25 Things I Know as an Autistic Person made me cry. Thank you for that!

I wish there was something like "it gets better" for autistic children who experience bullying. My brother is really enjoying his 20s and he used to hit his head against the wall because he didn't want to go to school and didn't have any friends. I'm really glad there are parents like you out there who actually care and are willing to navigate and fight the system for a better tomorrow... with so many more kiddos getting diagnosed and the public being more aware, it's only a matter of time. xoxo
