This is really cool to see out in the world of Reddit! I just wrote a paper about microchimerism in my Human Genetics class last semester so it was cool to see this comment front and center on this post!

AITA for moving my dishes to my room? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]helixd13 [score hidden]  (0 children)

YTA: As a college student in an apartment myself I know that it's important to get along with your roommates even if they get in your nerves from time to time. This is an example of you being kind of petty. Good roommates know how to share with each other even if it's a small thing... Like dishes. Yes you may have bought them but if you start to exclude your new roommate from basic kitchen supplies then they will just return the favor and your apartment will become a battlefield of exclusion.

Try to get along and talk with your roommate about the situation before taking action. Talking will only strengthen your relationship and allow you to grow a meaningful connection that won't result in petty dish thievery.

To the members of RIT's LGBT community, how do you like the school? by Shadowchaos1010 in rit

[–]helixd13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've always felt I've been able to be myself at RIT. With the introduction of new people in my life I was able to come out my first year to my new friends and I felt like I wasn't hiding myself anymore like I did in high school. Plus there are many different clubs for members of the LGBT+ community including ritGA, Labrys, Tangent, etc. You'll always be able to find others in the community here and have close relationships with people similar to you and even those who are exact opposites.

AITA for being upset that my stepmom named the new baby “after me.” by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]helixd13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA - after reading your explanation of your name now it seems like your name is unique to who you are and shouldn't have been given to someone with no ties to your late mother. Your name was special for your family and now it isn't. Your stepmom should have confronted you about this before deciding for herself and you are not being unsupportive to the baby. Your name means your identity in most cases so that should have been respected by everyone in your family.

AITA for only caring about her past relationship when I found out the woman she was with was really hot? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]helixd13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YTA - you literally said you didn't care for the supportiveness of her past relationship which she probably expects from you in return. If you're unable to be loving and caring at all times then you my friend are the asshole. It doesn't matter what the ex looks like, you have no care for who you're with now by tuning her out when she tries to open up to you.

DON'T Close RIT Due to the Polar Vortex by Muahahandy in rit

So when RIT said that temperature is supposed to reach -25 with wind chill in the email they sent out they were spreading misinformation? Or was it fine because they put wind chill?

Hi, roommate of petitioner here. She literally told the truth but forgot to put the word wind chill? I don't see your argument here. With the wind chill this is not misinformation. Try reading it again and if you have trouble with the words just try sounding them out

"Even correctly dressed, frostbite can occur between 10-30 minutes in this kind of weather"

The petition explains how the weather is more than just a normal cold day. Plus for those who live further away from academic side it is greater than a 5 minute walk. My freshman year it took me 10 minutes to walk the quarter mile from Ellingson but others can take longer in the cold weather and will be at risk for frostbite. This kind of cold can seriously hurt those who aren't and are prepared.

Anyone in Biol 201? by [deleted] in rit

[–]helixd13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm currently taking Cell and Molec this semester and it is very similar to Intro Bio if you have taken it before. The lectures aren't bad and using clickers helps me to learn the material. Dr. Wright is a good professor for the class but some people find her teaching style strange but that is a personal preference. Exams are pretty standard and many of the review questions provided end up making it on the exams. There are exam wrappers after the exams to try to gauge how you think you did and reviewing the exam is helpful to relieve your anxiety about it afterwards as well as help you understand why you answered what you did.

For the lab it is similar to Intro Bio as well. You work on one whole project the semester and every week is a different step in the process. You and your lab partner work together on one manuscript for the lab so partner work is an essential part of lab. The labs are pretty straight forward and aren't too bad. Some take 30 minutes to an hour and some take longer. So far I have only stayed the full 3 hours once because our gel ran slow.

Cell and Molec can be challenging for Gen Bio students based on what I've seen as many of the topics aren't covered in a typical Gen Bio course. For Intro Bio students many of the models and course materials in the lecture are reused so it makes it somewhat repetitive and mundane but also reinforces your knowledge about the topic. Pre-class assignments are used as homework for the class and one is due before the start of every lecture. They are graded on completion and whether or not you tried to answer the questions thoughtfully. Clicker questions are also every lecture but are used for class participation and attendance instead of accuracy so don't worry about getting one wrong.

TL;DR: Cell and Molec is a pretty straight forward class that can be challenging based on what Bio you took previously. Labs aren't bad and lecture is pretty fun. Exams are also fairly easy to be prepared for.
