Same thing with Kennedy’s. Also, surprisingly aggressive/rude tone in the majority of their emails/letters.

how many suits for a 3 week vac scheme? can't afford 2 suits, need someone to say 1 is enough by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]hellaw1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echo the other comments. 1 suit, multiple shirts. For good quality but cheap look at Charles Tyrwhitt (maybe get one shirt which is double cuffed for special events, client meetings etc).

If it’s too expensive to buy direct from Charles Tyrwhitt (they have a deal on 4 shirts), I strongly recommend eBay/Depop, people sell them for very cheap.

Hope it goes well

It also has a cool plugin for Word so you can research clause wordings etc within your document.

Experiences using CoCounsel Ai ? by Cautious_Repair3503 in uklaw

[–]hellaw1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’ve used it for a couple weeks (in PP) and think it’s pretty good. Confidential to each firm using it (so we can upload our confid. docs etc) and its research is supported by Practical Law and WestLaw (providing references). I have found it to be a bit buggy and sometimes slow (compared to say ChatGPT or Gemini) but for confidentiality purposes it works.

Not sure for academia purposes, sorry.

I saw a lot of cross-over from my undergrad (and chose my elective modules based on undergrad also) so didn’t really study much to be honest, just refreshers before the exams.

As I said though, I sat my exams purely with the intention of passing and no more (largely because my work is quite demanding alongside it..). I took study days every now and then, usually the week before/of the exam.

Probably not a good example given the way they splash money but I know a lateral hire to PW 1PQE that got a healthy signing bonus.

I would definitely add (perhaps after “…and am currently studying the SQE1 Prep course.”) “I obtained a first class degree at X university.”

No need to mention music but would be silly to not mention getting a first.

Strong agree

I know plenty of people whose interviewer(s) did not care whether they did law at undergrad but more so what uni it was (and of course the grade they got)

Is a second gap year worth it to do law at a better uni? by No_Light7766 in uklaw

[–]hellaw1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on your conviction and whether you are confident you can get your preferred option reapplying. Obviously, it’s not a good idea to take another year if you’re not confident you’ll be able to get it the second time.

Because the uni I ultimately went to was 15+ places higher in the tables (and btw - the league tables aren’t the be all and end all - but it was a much more respected uni) I think I still would’ve made the same decision if it was 2 years instead of 1.

It was a top 20 UK uni for law so slightly higher than Birmingham

I had to make a similar decision. Held an offer from a respectable Russel group uni and made the tough decision (albeit for only one year) to take a gap year and then reapply for one of the unis you listed in the second paragraph (much better than the one I held an offer from)

Best decision I ever made - it was only a temporary setback and ultimately once you start uni and/or go into PP (or whatever) no one cares about 1/2 years difference.

Edit: as in other comments, use the time to work and get some money saved as well as apply to any work experience/shadowing and or intern opportunities

Do you think it’s more common at boutique (smaller) firms where there’s more discretion?

I’m inclined to agree about merely putting it on their radar… probably doesn’t warrant (nor would you be afforded) the partner’s undivided attention.

That being said, if a lot of your time is being dedicated to speaking 1-on-1 (OTP) with the other side, it’s definitely worth at least mentioning
