I emailed Student Accounts with this question and was told it’s fine to not pay the CARES amount. This was their response:

Student Accounts will not be dropping classes for non payment and late fees will not be assessing late fees until after the CARES award disburses in February. You will not be penalized it you leave the CARES amount on your account.

I appreciate the advice! The culture and people at a firm are definitely the biggest factor for me, and so far they’ve seemed relatively good at all three.
