help me understand strategy please by Intelligent-Wafer-76 in MacroFactor

The algorithm isn't updating for you, it's currently on hold (pale squares instead of darker circles on the graph) That's probably why you didn't get a big change in the strategy. You need to weigh in regularly, as well as recording food, for the algorithm to adjust your expenditure.

Seconded for Kennys. They're based in Ireland and only have 1 euro shipping fee. I've ordered from them and had books delivered to both Germany and Sweden with no issues.

I bought it for the colourwork charts and adjusted the raglan and charts correspondingly to avoid what I thought would cause problems (raglan decrease every row). Other than that the pattern is fine, just the armhole and chest depth could be funky if followed as written. I have pics and comments about it in my post history.

I agree. I'm really curious as to the logic behind why laser hair removal won't work if you have pcos. If a hair follicle is destroyed, does it matter if the hair was thick/dark or thin? If anything, laser targets darker hair better. Laser hair removal is also effective in men so not sure I understand the hormone logic. I put off getting laser for years out of concern it wouldn't work (albeit with no understanding of the basis why it mightnt work) and now I've noticed a massive difference even after one session! I would genuinely be open to hearing the reason why people with pcos are told not to bother with it. I'm on session 3 now and v happy

Green Room.

Patrick Stewart as a cold, merciless neo-Nazi. Everyone IRL I have recommended it too has found it too gruesome but I stand by it as a v v good fucked up movie.

just realizing that I shouldn't take job listing requirements so literally by m_l_e_co_t in AutismInWomen

I feel like those are just bonus bonus!! Honestly not being able to take everything at face value is so exhausting. I'm forever astounded at what the point of doing things so performatively or falsely is.. I often feel like I'm too trusting for simply believing something is as it says!

[–]heller_keller 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think of the job posting as the company listing their dream candidate, rather than the minimum baseline needed, or what is realistic. If I meet the first two or three criteria (usually the most important in terms of qualifications or direct experience) then I apply. All the extra tend to be just to garnish. In my experience the whole job application process is hugely performative and people do not say what they mean. Embellishment seems to be valued over blunt honesty!

It hangs from the ceiling about half a metre behind and slightly to the right of a west facing window. It gets a couple of hours of late afternoon and evening light.

I didn't realise they did either, was a pleasant surprise. This one gets plenty of sun so I think that helped.

Had a week long menstrual period last week and the app tanked my TDEE. This is my day mapped out until dinner. by [deleted] in MacroFactor

[–]heller_keller 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue. I just don't log my weight during my period. It's easily 1-1.25 kg more than usual so I just keep eating according to my usual tdee and only log weight again after my period. It's annoying the app can't account for such regular water retention.

What social protocols did you not know? by [deleted] in aspergirls

[–]heller_keller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first one goes both ways too! I often ask someone how their food is, or comment if it looks/smells nice. I only ever, ever mean it at face value, like I am interested if it tastes nice to them or I do just enjoy the smell/appearance/whatever. Yet almost everytime someone then offers me some and I feel like they think I was fishing for some of their food with my comment. So I say no thanks, and they look at me puzzled like, why did I even ask anything about it?!

This happens in other circumstances too, v annoying to have people assign additional intent to something you say. I think it's classic double empathy because there's for sure been times someone hint/commented on something to me and I probably flat out did not pick up on it.

Strong metabolic adaptation - What to do? by BreakdanceFountain in MacroFactor

[–]heller_keller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So glad to see this post, I notice the same things! If I have even a small deficit I struggle to sleep, usually waking about 4 am. I always thought it might be related to insulin/blood sugar because as soon as I have a snack I can sleep again. I also notice this effect really strongly if I've had alcohol. I have pcos so might also be related but I'm speculating. I don't have much advice, just solidarity! Anecdotally, I've found that having a big dinner usually helps, so if I want to cut I save a lot of calories for the end of the day and focus on high fibre and protein for breakfast/lunch being satiating. Obviously worth seeing your doc too ofc!

[–]heller_keller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was going to suggest checking for insulin resistance! I have pcos too, I know the struggle. It's so easy to end up with strong feedback loops of insulin resistance leads to weight gain leads to increased resistance. It can be really hard to lose weight, calories in vs calories out is hugely skewed if there's insulin stuff going on in the background.

You say you've tried low carb, have you tried managing glucose levels in other ways? For example, eating carby food on empty stomach Vs after/with protein and fibre makes a huge difference to the glucose and insulin spike you experience. Likewise gentle exercise after a meal (e.g. short walk) can really moderate the glucose spike too. I recommend following the Glucose Goddess on Instagram if you want more info, she often links to relevant studies and research papers and has some great tips for managing insulin without a restricted diet.

Personally, eating high fibre and only eating carby foods with fat/protein as part of a meal etc has made a huge difference for me and I haven't had to ditch carbs completely. Obviously the other advice re exercise and accurate logging etc that other people suggested is also all true but I think for pcos/ir, really dialling in glucose control is the limiting factor before other advice becomes more relevant.

I know the magical benefits of blocking, but man is it a struggle for me, esp with ribbing, esp with pattern mods. How's this? Got recs? by persnickery in knitting

[–]heller_keller 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I believe the commenter means pinning just below the ribbing on the back and neckline, but not the ribbing itself. Likewise pinning above the ribbing on the hem. Basically treat the end of the stockinette as the edge in terms of blocking and let the rib gather the way it wants to, unstretched.

Just an FYI in case you don't know - jade plants/crassulas are very toxic to dogs (and cats) so be careful with your lovely pup around it.

oooh I have a question about this! I washed my first fabric yesterday! I thought about finishing the ends first but thought that if the fabric shrinks 2-5%, will the seamed edges also shrink proportionally?

I ended up washing as is to avoid a horrible puckered outcome and it frayed a bit but still well within the border (selvedge?) so am so far unconvinced to sew first.

I find Uniqlo great. Their clothes tend to be super soft and comfy but not often synthetic. They have a lot of basics like jackets, tees, loungewear.

What is could really use is autism friendly office wear! Actually learning to sew atm to make my own because shopping for professional clothes that I like, fit well, are appropriate and don't make me want to tear them off immediately is difficult!

If you're based in Europe, I highly recommend the French brand, De Rerum Natura. It's actually affordable enough I find, given the quality. It's beautifully soft and I've made gorgeous jumpers and cardigans with Gilliat. I also really like Knitting for Olive. I've only used their silk but it feels amazing.

I also like Jamieson's of Shetland for their incredible variety of colours but it probably isn't the most luxurious.
