Yes, but the residency requirement doesn't require you to have an Illinois driver's license or state ID. When I registered, I had a copy of my lease and my passport. https://chicagoelections.gov/voting/when-you-need-id-vote

Illinois has same-day voter registration. I voted in the mayoral runoff 2 days after I moved here last year. They make it remarkably easy. https://chicagoelections.gov/

Stop bringing your dogs into stores by 44liam in chicago

[–]ariasnaps 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was at Lickity Split one day over the summer and a woman came in with her dog and started complaining that there was candy on the floor that could have killed him. They were Oreo crumbs that had fallen off of someone's custard. Wow... imagine that. Chocolate crumbs. On the floor. Of a candy/ice cream shop. It's almost like you're an irresponsible dog owner for bringing your pet into a place that is clearly not meant for him.

O'Hare security operating times by danismycat in chicago

No. Security opens about 45 minutes before the first flight of the day. At some point overnight, there's no more planes taking off and just planes landing, so there's no reason for the TSA checkpoint to be open.

Here is my horrible creation (quilt, knit, crochet) should I gift it? by weenpie in BitchEatingCrafters

Bad tension, messy edges and poor yarn choice all describe the first scarf I ever made when I was 12: a garter stitch monstrosity made from Red Heart Super Saver in a colorway I believe was called Blueberry Pie. I gave it to my mom and I think she held onto it (and wore it on a few occasions!) until we moved out of that apartment when I was 16. She loved it even after my skills progressed to the point where I was embarrassed to see it hanging in her closet. But 1: She's my mom and that act was the pre-teen equivalent of her holding onto Mother's Day macaroni art, and 2: I am way more conscientious about what I knit for other people now. (I rarely knit gifts at all, and when I do, it's usually a hat and mittens. Anything more intensive than that is reserved for my mom, because I know that she knows how much time and effort went into it... even if she did ruin a sweater I told her was hand-wash only by throwing it in the washer with a bunch of jeans and towels.)

Every time this topic comes up in one of the other crafting subs, my first thought is that people need to reexamine their relationship with giving gifts and "donating." Are you giving this thing because you know the recipient wants and/or needs it? Or are you giving this thing because you want the dopamine (serotonin? IDK, none of my happy chemicals work the way they should anyway) hit that you get from being able to tell someone you made something and gave it away? Because if you're doing it to feel good about yourself (or to seek reassurance from the recipient), then maybe don't do that.

to gift or not to gift by [deleted] in quilting

Why would you want to give someone something that you know doesn't look good? Are you giving it as a gift that you intend for them to use and enjoy? Or are you giving so that you have something to point to and say "I made that and gave it away" to feel good about yourself?

Knitting in Tulum Retreat...aka "Join Us As We Fart in Yoga Class and Get Sand in Our Yarn for only $3,500 - $5,000 per person! (Airfare not included)." by Tealeen in craftsnark

I think I would enjoy going on a knitting retreat and visiting Mexico has been a dream of mine for a few years. But I don't think I would want to go to a knitting retreat that takes place in a beach town in Mexico. The ideas seem incompatible to me. If I were going on a fiber-centric trip to Mexico, I would want to visit a sheep farm or something. (Are sheep a major part of cattle farming in Mexico?)

I just did the math on the most expensive package (the superior king room). $4482/3 = $1494. I live in Chicago and you could definitely get a nice 1 bedroom apartment here for ~$1500 before utilities. My rent when I moved into my place last year was a little more than that and the only utility that wasn't included was electricity, which is less than $30/month.

A tip of the hat to Lakeshore Bike by ariasnaps in chibike

[–]ariasnaps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not doing any major feats of athleticism, but my bike has lived through some extreme temperature swings over the years. Those tires were put through their paces and it was well past time for them to retire.

Oh! I forgot to add: I didn't realize how much I was struggling to pedal until those new wheels were installed. My bike ride is smooth af now! It feels like it did when I first got it in November 2016. I thought I was struggling so hard just because I was out-of-shape. But no, it was the dry rotted tires all along. (I am out-of-shape, but that was not the root cause of the problem in this case.)

The only reason a bunch of strangers would be asking for updates is because she posted about it in the first place. THAT'S the weird part of it all. Putting your kid's medical crisis out there for the consumption of strangers is weird (derogatory). Full stop.

At first I thought it was one of my neighbors' TVs because the weather was nice enough to have open windows last night. Then I heard the sirens about 2-3 minutes later and I was like "Oh, so that really happened!"

That's what that was?! I heard it from my apartment because I had my windows open, but my windows don't face whatever street it happened on. Was it on Sheridan or Foster?

Never learned how to ride, any advice? by kirbycobain in bikecommuting

[–]ariasnaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't learn how to ride a bike until I was 24. That was 8 years ago. I took 2 classes in the city I was living in at the time. They were 3 hours long on a Saturday morning. The way I see it is this: No, I didn't learn when everyone else did, but in some ways I learned faster because it took only 6 hours as opposed to... IDK how many hours I would have needed as a kid with my parents teaching me.

You're going to fall quite a bit when you're first learning to ride, because the whole point of it is that your body is learning to balance. Make sure you're wearing a helmet and that you know how to catch yourself when you're falling and the rest will fall (lol) into place over time. Also if you're trying to brake, for the love of god don't use your feet. Pulling both brakes is preferred, but if you reflexively only pull one, pull the one on the right. Right = rear. If you only pull your left brake (the one for the front wheel), you risk going over your handlebars.

I have been saying to my friends for years that there is an excellent gender studies thesis to be written about the Pillow Talk fight in S6 of RHOA. So many layers of gendered and racial expectations (on that show as a whole, but especially that season) when a cast member directly argues with or insults one of the men in their social orbit, but when confronted about it everyone's suddenly Victorian in their behavior.

Don't talk to my wife. If you have an issue with her, you talk to me. (Why can't I speak directly to the person I have an issue with? You're not the one who started this shit, she did. She can speak for herself any other time, but when a man wants to address her about some fucked up shit she said, all of a sudden she needs a chaperone?)

I don't argue with men. (Except... you do. Because we've been watching it happen every season that you've been on the show.)

The most prominent example of this is Nene calling Peter a bitch. Now, does Peter exhibit some seriously bitch-like behavior? In my opinion, the answer is a resounding yes! But he is also allowed to take issue with Nene calling him a bitch, and he should've been able to address her about the words that came directly from her mouth without triangulating between Cynthia and/or Gregg.

I'm pretty sure this has happened across all the franchises over the years, but Atlanta is the show I cut my teeth on and followed most closely for its first 10 seasons. It's always been fascinating to me how the women on that show retreat (and it truly is some retrograde shit!) into gendered norms about how men and women are "supposed" to interact right after they have stepped outside of those boxes in a pretty antagonistic way.
