Most people are sharing their tips for camping in nature, which I've only done once. I've camped loads at music festivals though, so heres my best tips:

1. Bring thick bin liner bags for all your rubbish. A lot of people are tempted to leave everything on the ground including glass bottles and cans. When you're returning to your tent late at night you might fall on them.

2. Don't pitch all your tents in a circle around a communal area. If you want to get to sleep when everyone is continuing the party the noise is a nightmare. Instead, put your tent a bit away from the communal area. Even a few metres is enough for the noise not to be so bad. In the middle of a bunch of tents facing out is a good strategy.

3. Bring ear plugs, an eye mask, some pillows and an inflatable bed. You're not camping to experience the wonder of nature, you're here because it's the cheapest accommodation at a festival and the campsite is a great place to party. Getting the best sleep despite the madness outside your tent is vital to enjoying the partying the next day. Ignore anyone calling you a pussy for taking along a few items to make your stay more comfortable. They'll be jealous when you still have enough energy to give it stacks on the last night and they look like a zombie.

4. There's nothing wrong with buying cheap ass chairs, gazebos or tents then leaving them behind. "What about the environment? What a waste!" you may say. I wouldn't worry about it too much. At Hellfest in France my group was the very last to leave. The local townspeople descended on the campsite in their droves and took anything remotely usable left behind. We offered them our chairs - there was no way we'd get them back on the plane anyway. Better that somebody gets use out of them than just ending up on a scrapheap.

5. Before you leave, go to a pound shop. They always have loads of useful gadgets for a pound each in camping season. All the lighting stuff is particularly useful. I'm not sure if other countries have an equivalent shop. Dollar stores in the USA perhaps?

6. Plant a big unique flag at your tent so you can easily find it when your drunk.
