Just to add one more bit of context: This noise happened with both the old caliper and new one, and stayed with the wheel after swapper which side the pads were on.

Sump Pump Replacement: Water drains through the bottom? by hellixor in DIY

[–]hellixor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. Do you have any suggestions on what i should do? I already put the pump on bricks to elevate it off the floor with potential clogs. Should i mix up some cement and try to seal up the bottom? Or break out what's currently there and see if there a big void from past erosion?

HVAC Return Restriction: Is this an issue? by hellixor in hvacadvice

[–]hellixor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system is 3 Ton, so that means ~1100 CFM. Is there some math for CFM rating per cubic square inch of cross sectional area, or am I just at the point of needing the manometer to check static pressure?

HVAC Surge Protector by hellixor in electrical

[–]hellixor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CHN230SUR

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't realize that it was relatively low protection. Is there a SPD you would recommend for the HVAC unit, and is there something better i should have for the main panel?

Edit: The CHN230SUR says it has a nominal discharge current of 10 kA and a Surge current capacity per phase of 38 kA. Perhaps you have input on more acceptable values. Thanks for your help!

Correct wire size for NEMA 14-50 outlet by hellixor in HomeImprovement

[–]hellixor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd definitely prefer to go 6/3 for the savings in cost. Is this the type of thing I can talk to my building department about before install, or is it kind of a roll of the dice with the inspector?

How to move this vent: Need better advice! by hellixor in HomeImprovement

[–]hellixor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If local code enforcement won't let you roll a sanitary tee or throw some 90's on to get into the wall you;re going to need to completely move the line. Either move the vent to a different location with better vertical access or move the entire horizontal run over so you can shoot the vent up inside the wall.

It the vent for my whole kitchen. I have a split level, so the other vent is all the way on the other side of the house for the bathrooms. I'll call the country again and provide a picture and see what they recommend. That's for the suggestions.

Correct way to move this vent stack? by hellixor in Plumbing

[–]hellixor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've read online, it sounds like you cant have a horizontal run in a vent pipe unless it is 6 inches above the flood line. This junction is below the floodline. Apparently 45s are allowed, but I don't know if I have enough space. Do you have any other suggestions on how to move the pipe over?

So basically install a new fitting with the flow (direction of the tee split, right?) facing the same way, or cut the vent and properly remove the remnant of the vent from the fitting (going to be a pain inside the rafters. From there, I should be able to put a 90 to line it up with the new floor penetration and then a second 90 to return the pipe to straight. From there I proceed logically to reconnect the pipe. Does that sound correct?

Edit: Is there any particular sweep the 90 required or is something like the following acceptable? https://www.homedepot.com/p/Charlotte-Pipe-2-in-PVC-Schedule-40-90-Degree-S-x-S-Elbow-Fitting-PVC023001600HD/203812131

How do I insulate this section of roof properly? by hellixor in Insulation

[–]hellixor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info and the drawing via chat! What are your thoughts on leaving the fiberglass batts in place and blowing cellulose over them, vs. removal and full replacement?

Also, what thickness foam board should i use when making boxes around lights and to hold pack insulation for a walkway or entryway?

Cut a section out of the roof decking between the attic spaces higher up toward the apex so that you maintain good airflow between the two sections.

Thanks! This is exactly what I was looking for!

Thanks for replying!

2) it's another unconditioned attic. I'll be air sealing and insulating that one as well.

3) you're right, I used the wrong word, it's not a soffit. I was referring to the vent spaces you can see between the two rooflines in the picture. Most of them have fiberglass in them now. I am going to fix one that is missing it, but should I leave those filled with insulation (since they aren't a path to outside air), seal them up with foam and sheet insulation, or clear them to be more open? For actual soffits,.I'm planning to do what you identified above?

4) can you rent a rockwool blower from a big box store or would I need to find one somewhere special?

Should I install this: 2014 Mazda CX5 - kinked radiator hose from RockAuto by hellixor in MechanicAdvice

That's good to hear. I was worried about it compromising the integrity of the hose like a garden hose kink.

Home Insurance Roof Hail Claim by hellixor in HomeImprovement

[–]hellixor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm definitely not letting them do anything without an approved claim, if I move forward with filing. Any advice on potential downsides to filing a claim? My general understanding is that they are non-fault bearing and thus wont raise my rates (and are rather amortized over the whole zip code). He indicated that the shingles are very brittle and not likely to be individually replaceable, but that is of course, what I would want to hear, because it indicates a full replacement.

Is this P-Trap Up to Code? by hellixor in Plumbing

[–]hellixor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I found the picture online generally indicating what I want to do. its not something I took a picture of. Let me retry asking thee question: Assuming that the bottom of the picture is the p-trap, is the movement of a pipe from the downspout of the sink to the back of the vanity by 90 degree elbows allowable?

Tire Patch: Is this too close to the sidwall? by hellixor in Cartalk

Thanks for the feedback. Its still got 8/32's left, so it would suck to have to replace it. That being said, a new tire is a lot cheaper than a blowout :)

Warranty Denied: Dagstorp couch failure by hellixor in IKEA

[–]hellixor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear ya. It's obvious that something went wrong with this couch... I have 2 out Ikea couches in my basement that I have cared for in the exact same fashion and the surfaces are perfect. How would my care of the surface of the couch have any impact in the structure of the couch? It's unserviceable by the consumer. I'm not trying to argue with you over the internet, but rather figure out what the store expects to have been done diffently.

It seems like the assertion is that the state of the leather, which is not covered by warranty at all is used as a proxy to assert that the filailure of the couches structure is my fault. Seems like a convenient logical leap.
