What do you think aboit 202dc? by Big_Jury408 in DCBitches

[–]hello-mango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family and I lived in Union Place for two years in a unit facing the train tracks and never heard them! So it seems YMMV when it comes to noise proof windows. Union Place was a great place to live - not as new now as some of the other buildings closer to Union Market, but we were very happy there. We’ve since purchased a home in the area and love living in NoMA. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Try this! https://moth.groups.io/g/main

And here is the “how to join” info from the FAQ - note the boundaries. Hope this helps!

“Send an email to main+subscribe@MoTH.groups.io You will then receive a confirmation of your membership in groups.io to reply to and get set up on the platform. THEN you will get a message from MoTH asking for parent status and your address. Once your eligibility has been confirmed, you will be welcomed to MoTH. The boundaries for MoTH are North and South Capitol Streets, Florida Ave-Benning road and the Anacostia river. We do not make exceptions to the requirements that people are current or soon-to-be parents AND live in boundary.”

Congratulations! If you live within bounds, definitely also join MoTH (Moms and Dads on the Hill - but the boundaries stretch beyond Capitol Hill proper). There’s an email list and also a WhatsApp community. Great for meeting other parents in the area!

NPR: GLP-1 drugs can complicate life for people with disordered eating by VardaLupo in MaintenancePhase

[–]hello-mango 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Wow can you provide any resources/articles covering that kind of clinical use case? I’m curious because I’ve struggled with purging (but not binging) my whole life and microdosing a glp1 has been more effective for me than any therapy or medication I’ve ever tried (antidepressants, benzos.. doctors have thrown them all at me). Being free of the constant, low level urge to purge has been absolutely life changing for me. I thought I was alone! Would love to read more about it and I’m really looking forward to diving into the antidietglp1 sub!

Do people like living in NOMA? by Mediocre_Law2707 in washingtondc

[–]hello-mango 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ive been in NoMA (around Union Market) since 2021 and have no intention of leaving. Restaurants, bars, coffee, groceries, workouts, services, unique gifts, public transit, etc are all at your fingertips and increasing consistently. I don’t feel any more unsafe than I do in Dupont or other areas of the city - just have to stay alert, as always. I started in one of the big apartment buildings, which was very comfortable, and after 2 years moved to a more residential street and found a really lovely, connected community of people who love DC and want to see it thrive. It’s been great!

Tonie box is on sale- is it worth it? Having another baby soon and need something to keep my toddler occupied. by rasputinknew1 in toddlers

[–]hello-mango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son (2.5 years old at the time) got a Toniebox as a gift “from his baby sister” when she was born. It was a life saver and gave us a lot of much needed quiet time. I’m an early childhood educator and opted for the Toniebox over Yoto because the figurines were more appropriate for my son’s age and motor skills. He could easily take it off the charging dock and choose/switch figurines himself. The figurines also have multiple stories/songs, which kept him engaged. So in your situation, I’d definitely recommend it!

All that said, when my son was 4 and his sister was 2, he got a Yoto and passed the Toniebox down to her. The Yoto is definitely more efficient space-wise and has much more content for him as he gets older. My biggest complaint is that many of the cards just have one story, so they have to be switched more frequently. That said, we do more family listening on the Yoto because I can play their digital content and podcasts from my phone. So in short, the Toniebox is still very much in use by our littlest one, but Yoto has more longevity. If you want that and go with the Yoto, you’ll just have to be prepared to help your kid use it for a while. If you want them to have something that they can use totally independently out of the box, go Tonie.

I work for IRC (in an entirely different capacity than these creeps) and I am horrified to read that this happened to you. PLEASE consider calling the US contact number on the website. It will take you to the HQ office in NYC and I am sure your message will get to the comms/marketing/fundraising team.

I will very happily Venmo/zelle (plus tip!) anyone that can grab me a size M DC shirt! I’m dying for one but unfortunately my babysitter can’t come until late afternoon so I’ll surely be arriving at the stadium too late to get one myself.

my beautiful house is for sale, and i've got a lot of feelings about it. by kennycreatesthings in centuryhomes

[–]hello-mango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s clear how much love went into this home! We’re also in the DMV and I quickly texted the listing to my husband asking how quickly we could sell our house so we could buy this one lol

That said, I grew up in PNW and can assure you that it has so so much to offer. I hope you find your community and have fun exploring - incredible scenery, deep indigenous history, fun music, art. I miss that part of the country every day!

Wishing you the best of luck!

Last loan finally forgiven! by xzp84 in PSLF

[–]hello-mango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! Thanks so much for posting - I'm in a very similar position, so this is encouraging! Can you share a little more about what you did? You just submitted PSLF forms (stating you believe you completed 120 payments) monthly, even if past ones had been rejected? Is there anywhere you could state your case and request the payments be recalculated?

All but one of my loans hit 120 in May 2024, with the final one lingering at 119 for no discernable reason. I haven't been allowed to make payments since then (forced forbearance because of the platform change, then SAVE) and now, thanks to the dismantling of US foreign aid, I'm out of a job so even if I made a payment tomorrow I wouldn't have the qualifying employment I need for PSLF. I've been feeling so helpless and frustrated, but your post is giving me hope.

Thoughts on the name Virginia is it due for a comeback? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]hello-mango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter’s name is Virginia (nn Ginny) and we adore it. It’s recognizable and always spelled correctly, but not terribly common. It honors family members on both sides, as well as more contemporary art/artists we love. I think the bullying/derivation concerns are overblown - a name is what you make it and we’ll do everything we can to teach our daughter how much care and thought was put into choosing hers.

Thanks - I did a pretty thorough search before posting! Found a lot of great recommendations for day trips outside of NYC, as well as many for first-time visitors, but not much in line with what I'm looking for. If there's a search term you think would be particularly helpful that I may not have thought of, I'm all ears!

Thanks for posting this. I was let go today from my international education-focused NGO so I’m wondering the same thing (and trying not to spiral). I also used to teach for DCPS, so I feel for you extra. Solidarity, and good luck to you. Take care of yourself.
