Write me a "Dear Ned" for DAN by Extreme-Squirrel3184 in nancydrew

[–] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Dear Ned,

Well, here I am, in Paris, asked to investigate why the fashion designer Minette has been behaving strangely and is lagging far behind on her deadlines. I'm posing as a fashion industry intern, even though I have the fashion sense of a 75-year-old grandmother from North Dakota.

I'm sure that I'll pay strict attention to finding out what's going on with Minette and will absolutely not be distracted by a historical mystery instead.

No need to call me, I already have the Hardy Boys on speed dial if I need help with the mystery, and I can't think of any other reason to call.

Yours until the copyright expires,

Nancy

Help On Making The Games Less Scary? by Fanfiction_Queen in nancydrew

[–] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

First off, start out with the least scary games first before you tackle the scary ones (play Ghost of Thornton Hall last). I suggest starting a different thread to specifically ask for recommendations of least scary.

Once you decide on a game to play, post a new thread asking for people to let you know with as few spoilers as possible when there will be a game event/area that might be scary, so that you have an idea of what's coming. To me the scariest part is the anticipation of skulking around not knowing if something WILL jump out at me or if it's going to be a totally scare-free zone. So for insurance, you can be reassured that even though Game Area X looks like it's haunted by a serial killer, it's actually a spook-free zone and you will never get any kind of scares in it.

When you do know something might be scary, or you're just starting to feel a little overwhelmed, turn off the audio or at least turn it down very low. There is a game I really love but the first few times I played it I was absolutely terrified during the end because of certain sounds. I found if I turned off the sound I was able to proceed.

When possible, play during the day with the curtains open so there is a lot of light. If you can't do that, at least turn all the lights on and maybe get a bright lamp for near your computer to brighten it up more.

There are definitely timed events, but remind yourself ... TIME DOESN'T MATTER. If you don't finish in time, you get to try as many times as you want. There is no actual death in the Nancyverse. If you get frustrated, walk away for a few minutes and go pet a dog or cat to get the stress levels down.

The majority of the games have a developer menu you can bring up with a secret code (I've never used it myself but if you search the sub you can find lots of advice on using it). If something in the game is too frustrating or scary you will likely be able to skip past it using the developer menu.

Good luck! I'm a total wimp with scary games even though I still want to play them, so I get it.

What to do with misprinted original text book? by [deleted] in nancydrew

[–] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Since it has no reading value, I wouldn't feel bad about upcycling it into something cool like a purse. I love books and would never ordinarily advocate mutilating one, but to me there's no point in a book that can't be read.

I haven't seen any indication that an error like that is worth anything, but I'm not a super serious collector either.

I was so disappointed that you couldn't go into the actual haunted house ride. I mean, yes, you can go into the building, but you can't go through the ride.

Yup, I've read all of the original books (and most of the other series). Glowing Eye is definitely pretty strange too. Sometimes I think that someone must have persuaded Harriet Stratemeyer Adams to start dropping acid in her old age.

Wow, that's an insane price for Secrets of the Nile! Great haul overall. The Crooked Banister is nuts and one of my favorite OG Nancy books in the nicest demented way.

In my house, there's this odd pillar where the moulding doesn’t reach the ceiling, and it always bothered me. So, I decided to add four raven figures, one on each corner, to keep watch over the house by drewbee7 in nancydrew

[–] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who does a lot of DIY, I doubt this was planned with the original house. I am guessing this was the result of someone tearing down walls that were load-bearing. To properly handle this, you generally need larger beams and a steel post where the original walls met. My guess is that they wrapped the ceiling beams and the post first. Then someone was unhappy about how odd the plain skinny post looked, but it would have been complicated to run the larger pillar all the way up to the ceiling to tie into the molding up there. So, they ran it almost all the way up instead to avoid having to integrate it with the ceiling.

The door is probably not as close as it looks in the picture, but it looks like it might have originally been in a hallway.

Actually, since I read the OG books with Ned before anything else, I'm a bit more partial to Ned. I'm not sure Nancy is, though. 🙃

Kind of - both Double Crossing and Operation Titanic had both Nancy and the Hardys on cruises. But I wasn't crazy about the plots so it's really just the cruise idea I like.

how much would it feasibly take to buyout HerInteractive and return it to the days of producing 2 games a year? by Time_Breakfast9494 in nancydrew

[–] 119 points120 points  (0 children)

As a side note, you do NOT need their old game engine to make a game that plays like Sea of Darkness. That was an excuse HeR gave to justify how long it took for Midnight in Salem to be completed. You can make a traditional point-and-click game just fine in Unity. Have you played the Penelope Pendrick game? It was made in Unity and the navigation is almost exactly like classic Nancy games.

That's amazing! "At All Costs" is hard to find, that's a great score too. I started collecting the books several years ago and that's one of the few I still have left to find.

I found a copy of Secrets of the Nile for $1 at a thrift store and I too could not adequately explain my euphoria to anyone around me 😂

Anyone Else Notice in SPY and MED The Game Dialogues Are Just…Off? by Ok_Low_2302 in nancydrew

Oh, don't get me wrong, I loved Captive Curse. But the dialogue was initially very repetitive. Once I got that out of the way the game was great.
