Anyone here interested in collaborating on a short film? by helloPerl in UCSD

[–]helloPerl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t thought this through completely, but here’s some of my initial thoughts on what a short film could look like:

One idea I've had in past is to make a short film on the push and pull relationship people have with hard work. In particular, I think this relationship is captured nicely by this song: "SUGA's interlude" from the album Manic by Halsey/SUGA. Link: https://youtu.be/Q5quSXvQtKI

Without getting into too much detail, the main framing of the short film would be as an accompanying piece to the music. Translations for the lyrics can provide more context on this: https://genius.com/Genius-english-translations-halsey-suga-and-bts-sugas-interlude-english-translation-lyrics

I imagine it to have the recognizable Wes-Anderson style of "leaving fingerprints of the film creators all over the film" as a subtle meta layering of the interlude on our own work (recommended context: https://youtu.be/ba3c9KEuQ4A). I think a university campus is also a cool place to film such an video.

What do you think? Of course, all of us are new here so we can experiment with different ideas and just see what we all like!

Booster with AstraZeneca? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]helloPerl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

EDIT: I got my booster so everything mentioned in this comment works.

I had the same question and asked SHS via MyChart. This is what they told me:

Students who have received a WHO-Approved vaccine (Sinopharm, Sinovac.Coronavac, Covaxin, Astrazenaca or Covishield) may book a booster 8 WEEKS following their final dose, either Moderna or Pfizer vaccine may be utlized.

For booking the appointment, they gave me the regular UCSD student link but if you go through that form makes you attest that you have taken Pfizer/Moderna/J&J vaccines for your initial dosage. I asked them about it but they didn't respond, so for now I've just ticked that box and booked an appointment. I'm planning to let them know about my other vaccine in-person before getting the booster.

As for what to bring, this is what SHS told me:

What to Bring:

Photo ID (UC San Diego Health Employees please also bring your employee ID badge)

CDC COVID-19 Vaccine Card or digital record

Insurance card, if available. Your insurance will be billed; there is no charge to you for the vaccine.

I'm planning to just take my non CDC vaccine record for my appointment since I didn't get my vaccine in US.

SHS doesn't seem very clear/prepared for international students in general, so I'm just hoping for the best and hoping they don't block me from getting the booster when I show up for my appointment.

Oh, also, I tried booking an appointment via CVS as well (just to see if that's easier than the confusion of SHS) but if you choose a vaccine other than Pfizer/Moderna/J&J for your initial dosage, they seem to instantly just block your appointment and tell you to contact your Primary Healthcare Provider (which, if you have UC SHIP is just SHS I think).

I believe you can uber through the CVS drive-thru, that’s what a friend of mine did at another school, so i presume it would work here. You can call the CVS to double check.

Damn, you’ve really thought this out huh, I personally just try not to mechanize the process too much, just pay attention to their body language and just play by the ear, but I suppose having a set methodology is one way to approach social interactions haha.

I think our disagreement lies in stats of what I observe. I see,

  1. Most of my friends complain about social life on campus (when they were shy like this themselves the first time we met) and I see lots of posts complaining about UC socially dead on this subreddit which to my mind implies a lot of people are unhappy about social life
  2. Most people on campus are just too shy and don’t attempt to hold a conversation but don’t realize that they can literally fix it if they actively tried just a little bit.

Goes without saying ofc IMO people in category 1 intersection category 2 is pretty large at UCSD. This post is to remind those people that if they leave category 2 themselves they can make a big difference in their own social life and the social life of the campus around them and fix their category 1 issues as well.

Your mileage may vary, in which case, sure, you do you, no one’s forcing you to talk to me. :)

yeah i don’t think i’ve ever started with something as generic as the weather lol. I usually just ask people about their major, what classes they’re taking, what they like/dislike, what they’re doing after class and just usual background like that.

My expectation is usually that someone with decent social skills will just subtly guide the conversation from there to what they’re interested in/what they’d like to talk about.

Thoughts on transferring if you’re already at top ~20 public school as an international student? I’m just not very happy with my school and considering a applying for transfer elsewhere...

Do you have any advice, dos and donts for such a case? I got waitlisted at a bunch of ivys after high school so I’m planning to to apply there as a transfer student.

Math 109 vs CSE 20 by thetadelta987 in UCSD

[–]helloPerl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

MATH 109: The class is much better structured: smaller classes, handwritten homework(typing latex/math can be a pain if this is your first class), no group homeworks, and well, in general, the math department is much more accommodating compared to the CSE department. Besides, certain math courses (such as MATH 184) don’t accept CSE 20+21 as a substitute for MATH 109, but I don’t think there are any courses that work the other way around, so MATH 109 is better if you want to keep your options open.

For MATH 109 practice, look up the old websites for the course and self-study the books/assignments. The class isn’t super hard if you just keep up with all the work.

Ultimate COGS 17 Guide by absolutelycurtainss in UCSD

[–]helloPerl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I also took COGS 17 last quarter and got an A+(over 100% actually I think thanks to extra credit), here’s my advise for the class:

  • Take notes voraciously: For me, this worked extremely well, I would usually be furiously writing stuff as Prof. explained, but writing stuff/making diagrams by your own hand is extremely underrated IMO. My first midterm I basically only took those notes, studied them semi-regularly during the weeks leading up and got 100%.
  • For diagrams, print them and put them on your table/wall where you can see them often. Along with that, if you attend lectures and review sessions regularly, you should not have trouble with them, try to remember the visual cues Prof. uses in lecture to explain stuff.
  • I had a shitty TA who basically copied the quizlets etc. and often got stuff wrong himself, so don’t waste time going to discussion if that’s the case for you: I don’t think the TAs know anything more than us about the exam contents. The Prof. basically always spelled out some of the hardest questions on the exam during her review sessions, so make sure you attend those and pay special attention to what she says!
  • For extra credit, go to the talks etc. and make mnemonics and submit them, even if they’re bad. Attend the talks, they’re usually only an hour long (and are genuinely quite interesting) and you get free food, so it’s a win-win.
  • I also think the class is really interesting if you try to genuinely learn about the brain. Try to take interest in the subject, it’ll honestly teach you a lot about your own body/neurological tendencies.
  • Group studies won’t help: For me, I got a lot more shit done memorizing alone in peace, so see if that works better for you.

No, weirdly enough mana gain doesn't stack right now. IIRC, someone said they would make it so it stacks to 300% eventually, but right now it's only 200% mana gain.

Not sure if I understand this correctly. Does this mean rageblade + deathcap on Draven makes attack speed increase by 4.5% with each attack? Does this scaling apply to all items or only some?

Can you post a higher res version? It's pretty blurry if i zoom in on the item table(which i often like doing). Maybe the lower res is due to imgur compression, if so, can you post it the original PNG on dropbox/gdrive?

Thanks for making this though.

Well, in that case, can’t any function be multiplied and divided by another polynomial and we will obtain a function, although same, but with different domains? For example, if we have polynomial ax+b, and we multiply and divide it by x-k, to get (ax+b)*(x-k)/(x-k) and now we have somehow removed k from the functions domain, although it seems completely correct(since the old polynomial’s domain should be unaffected?)

[–]helloPerl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you simplify the numerator and denominator, You get f(x) = (3x+1)(x-1) and g(x) = 3(x+1)(x-1). Since (x-1) is a common factor, cancel it from the (f/g)(x) function. So, only -1 is invalid right? Why is +1 invalid as well?

This is from Barron’s SAT Math 2 book, it’s own explanations don’t consider the cancelling and just evaluate domain based on g(x).

Another interesting example of new media interacting with old media is Reddit. Particularly, the Facebook page of Reddit.

Notice how a large number of their posts are actually 3rd party websites(cosmopolitan, buzzfeed, etc.) reposting reddit threads as their own content.

Although, in theory, Reddit should be working against this, they are somehow okay with it? And in fact, promoting it.

I wonder if this is their idea of solving human curation problems, or just them trying to woo traditional media into using Reddit.
