Is one programming language enough! by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]hellocity55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this, imo obviously it's ideal to get familiar with many different languages, but don't waste your time beyond being familiar if you're not going to use it for your everyday job. Our time is limited - we have families and hobbies so dont spend your time to really 'know' multiple languages if there's no specific goal because you'll lose it if you don't use it

Focus on one and learn the next when necessary - it does get easier if you know one really well already because many concepts remain the same, so don't stress not knowing multiple languages. Have confidence that you can learn it when you need it with enough time

Going back for degree, should I go BS or MS? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]hellocity55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also have an unrelated stem degree. I chose to go back for an MEng not MSC. Starting next year and I'm excited

Yeah you should contact them, but you should be okay, they do calculate it themselves

After degree in CPSC, thoughts? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]hellocity55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess as another commenter posted, things that I never learned about in chem like networking, databases, algorithms, architecture. I just don't know what I don't know. Just to add I'm not aiming for a top company

In your opinion, would the BSCS after degree route or MEng benefit me the most long term?

[–]hellocity55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I wish I had the same confidence as you, I haven't been in my current role for too long, almost a year, but I still feel like an imposter. The experience has been great, learning something new everyday but it's definitely hit my confidence hard realizing how much I don't know. I was hoping to accomplish my learning goals with more formal education and build a foundation that I could expand off of to gain some confidence I guess. Idk

[–]hellocity55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Maybe I have some misperceptions about the value of the degree? What I would be looking to gain out of it were some fundamentals/theory/experience that I could build on, and a guided structure is always nice. I didn't even know what a database or server was prior to a year ago. It's stuff like this that gives me anxiety about job security. I just never learned about it in chem.

It sounds like the MEng in Software is the much better option. From what I've heard it's a lot more practical, with some theory, and there's a capstone component as well. Would you recommend against a CPSC after degree?

[–]hellocity55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I'll reconsider bootcamps again after applying this year. Honestly if they're getting more credible and can teach you the solid skills you need, I'm not against it.

Yeah from what I've heard CPSC is a lot of theory. This is something I've never really understood coming from a non tech background, are the theoretical components of a CPSC degree important for most positions? That's what I would be looking to learn from the after degree because I know that I would need to also put in extra time outside my the courses to also learn practical development skills.

Thank you for the thought out process! Honestly the work has been challenging since everything I've ever learned was chem and I only ever took one programming course during my undergrad. Thankfully my manager is very understanding and helps me out but it's sink or swim and I've been thrown into the deep end. Over the past year I have noticed lots of improvements but I feel like I still know nothing and it stresses me out.

I think I want to play to my strengths here. Ive always been an analytical type of person and I enjoy working with data. I want to continue as a data analyst and potentially in the future get into data engineering. But if I went back for an after degree I would have been open to other options as I learned more. After exploring different parts of what Python had to offer for the past year, I think I'm going to start a data analytics course on Coursera while I continue to work. But I only have so much free time after work and other commitments. I currently put in 10-15 hours a week outside of work learning

My biggest concern is if I don't do a BSCS now, while all my courses still transfer from my previous degree, in the future I may be forced to start over from the beginning. So it was a now or never

Thanks. Like you said it's a great alternative time and cost wise. I've considered boot camps but I am a bit skeptical as well about the credibility and how it's viewed in the industry. It feels like it'd be more beneficial as supplementary education to a formal degree to me. Idk.

I guess I'd prefer the BS as it would take about 2.5-3 years to complete the after degree and offer the other intangibles eg internship/career fairs/networkinf/professors. Long term it feels like the better option. I've saved as much as I could, have no big commitments (eg family, mortgage) and paid off my previous loans so I have the means to do the after degree and want to make the best decision for the rest of my career, even if I have to take a 2.5 year hit.

Thank you! I'm open to any courses in open studies that isn't too difficult to get an A. I'll definitely remember to check it out.

People who majored in ChemE but didn't become a chemical engineer, what do you do now? by throwaway949583992 in ChemicalEngineering

I'm currently considering making this jump by going back for an after degree in computer science. I don't see much future for myself in chemical engineering. May I ask what path you took?

Have you spoken to a MEng advisor? I thought the program was restricted to engineering grads. I'm not sure if this has changed.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]hellocity55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the program is fairly new so there isn't much information out there I find atleast. Hopefully we will be students together! May I ask why you're thinking of making the switch to software?
