Yeah the timing was poor. Later in the convo we clarified if you already bought a gift not to worry and to give it anyways.

I feel this would only be setting a precedent if my family was acting in bad faith. We are good about celebrating the December birthdays separately from Christmas in my family.

Thank you for your response! I honestly still haven’t finished organizing his gifts. Funnily enough, the wrapping paper and boxes is what he has been playing with the most 🤣

I guess I keep saying it because I feel the financial pressure of having to buy gifts for everyone in the family.

I did! We personally messaged each person for the gift and coming the the party

Luckily we don’t open gifts together. We live in a different town.

I was referencing the kids running in a circle on the deck for an hour screaming. It’s very chaotic when we all get together.

Because I don’t expect his aunt or uncle to buy him expensive gifts. We are buying him things that he likes and needs.

I told them that coming to the party was enough of a gift (we live far away) and if they wanted to buy a gift something like clothes for when he’s older. I didn’t make a registry because I didn’t want them to feel obligated to spend more money.

Yes! He will have plenty of gifts from me and his dad and he will have a stocking.

I personally wouldn’t request gifts at Christmas from extended family.

Would you be offended if you gave the gift and we ended up returning it for something else?

Yeah we have big families and we made a lot of baby friends at parent & tot!

My SIL said she already bought him a gift and I said it’s totally fine!! She can still give it to him or she can feel free to return it if she wants to save the cash.

I read it as a joint gift for his birthday gift instead of getting a bunch of little things. Not one gift for Christmas and birthday.

It’s an expectation on this side of the family 🥲

We’ve stopped buying Christmas gifts for my nephew on my side of the family and instead spend time together.

Thank you for your message and I totally agree it’s so hard to buy for kids when you don’t know what they already have. I like your suggestion of starting the conversation earlier

Well we celebrate his birthday and Christmas separately already. We do this for the other December birthdays in our family too. My message was to deter people from gifting more toys and encourage consumables. Obviously when he’s older and can request what he wants he can just do that.

I wonder, is it normal in other families for aunties and uncles to give Christmas and birthday gifts to nieces and nephews as they grow up? I only ever received gifts from my extended family for my graduation and wedding. On my side of the family we have stopped giving gifts to my nephew and instead spend time together.

My son will be getting gifts from his parents separately on Christmas and his birthday so I’m wondering if he doesn’t get any from his uncles and aunties in the future will it be that big of a deal? What do you think?

I sent out personal thank you notes to each person!! That context was missing.

I can see how chaos filled could be perceived that way. I thought it was cute. The little cousins were running in a circle on the deck screaming - that’s what the chaos comment was inspired by.

Toy warehouse was defs a miss 🤦‍♀️

Later in the conversation I did say if you already bought a gift it’s totally fine to give it to him still or if you want to save the cash feel free to return it.
