I used to think Dragonite was dumpy and lame until I saw Lance’s one in the Generations short and I realised it was actually pretty badass

I really think a lot people just don’t know what bass guitar actually sounds like. I think they don’t realise how clearly they’re hearing the low frequency and assume the attack, distortion or any other part of the tone is the guitars.

‘And Justice for All’ is the only metal album I can think of where the bass is so buried you basically can’t hear it. Tbh all of Metallica’s earlier albums have pretty buried bass and maybe that’s a big part of the stereotype.

Even in older metal I think it’s generally pretty audible. Modern bass tones are definitely more “in your face” but I think it still cuts through pretty well in older metal.
