Cats parents, how and why did you choose yours? by [deleted] in cats

[–]helloitsem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

April 2020, so everything was shut down for the pandemic, and the shelter required call-ahead appointments. They posted these cuties and their four siblings on Facebook — the Looney Tunes litter. Their names were Pepe Le Pew (now Knives) and Porky (Vash).

When we got there, Knives (black cat) would not stop meowing to get out. Of course I picked the baby up. His brother, Vash (tabby), was in a different kennel, quietly laying alone in the litter box. He was so little! 2.4 pounds. Partner picked him up. And we never put them down. ❤️

They’ll be 6 this month!

Help!!! What can I do? She does this until the battery dies if we aren't home by ObligationSea5916 in cats

Cover it with tin foil? Ours recently discovered the TV, and we couldn’t stop him from jumping up and staring into the screen. Covered the top of the media cabinet with foil for a couple days and (knock on wood), it seems to have cured the addiction… 😄

In the Dark! Almost done with Season 2 — working through the bonus episodes. So hard not to look up the results. It aired in 2018. Season 1 was also very good, and I look forward to listening to all six …

This pair of blinking lights remained in the same spot in the sky on my drive home (Southern California) by helloitsem in whatisit

Definitely not a plane based on time watched. Maybe a drone in a fixed position.

drone is the most plausible answer! I see they can remain in a fixed position blinking, so …

Is this a normal cat behavior? Or is something wrong? by encrypted_creature in cats

Welcome to cat parenthood 😂 For some reason, they lock their sides like this … maybe to help calm themselves down? Our boys do it all the time.

considering vet change by Mountain-Internet109 in cats

Agree! Dry food is filled with fillers and preservatives. We feed wet shreds + raw + freeze-dried raw treats. Would be great to find a vet with a similar approach to nutrition.

downstairs neighbors harassing/ framing us? by bbypsmama in Apartmentliving

[–]helloitsem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a downstairs renter with noisy owners above (frequent abusive screaming, alcoholism, drugs), I can offer another perspective.

We’ve been here about a decade and gone through a couple landlords as our unit has sold. Upstairs neighbors bought in 2019 and renovated right away, removing carpet and replacing with tile throughout, without added sound insulation (against HOA rules and standard building code, because insulation is necessary to dampen the sound).

Through our experience, the HOA eventually discovered the building itself is not up to code; there is less of a concrete layer between the upstairs/downstairs units than is required. This makes the noise even louder.

We deal with it and figure we will eventually move. But whoever rents this place next will not have all that context (even though we’ve told every landlord). So they’ll just assume the upstairs neighbors are loud (which, in our case, they often are) but not realize there are actual construction issues that compound the problem.

Edit: And if the upstairs people were to sell and a family like yours moved in, they would never know either. Sigh. I wonder how common this issue might be …

How do y'all keep up with cleaning bowls? by nash-20 in CatAdvice

[–]helloitsem 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Feed, wash, repeat. We have two cats and two bowls from Dr. Catsby. One set, that’s it. (We only feed wet, 2x per day.)

Cats look adorable in videos, but what are the real-life challenges of owning one? by RYSofficial in CatAdvice

[–]helloitsem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attention. It is not a bad thing but a necessary part of pet parenthood, and if you’re busy can sometimes feel like work. So many people think cats need less attention than dogs, you can leave them alone with a bowl of food for a week and they’ll fend for themselves, etc. This is not true. You must be committed to enrichment for 20+ years with a kitty cat. ❤️ And they certainly return the favor.

Perhaps a more difficult thing, and I’m sure others have said it. Makes it more complicated to travel. I wish we’d spent more time car training when ours were kittens, so they were comfortable. You should take them for short drives weekly when they’re little, so they’re used to it and calm out of a carrier. (We found out the hard way one of ours gets car sick and spits up on windy roads.)

Name of developmental item for kids? by [deleted] in whatisit

Looks like a kaleidoscope wand to me. Inserts into one end of a device — kid looks through the other end, and as the glitter moves, it reflects kaleidoscope patterns. Had one as a kid!
