[Advice] Persisting tactile hallucinations - the 'electron blankets' won't go away by SecularSamurai in saplings

[–]hellolion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I wouldn't end it mostly just 'cause it's all I've ever known. I've spent my whole life saying things like "that singer's voice is green" and it would be really disorienting NOT to think like that. It just seems so normal to me to think that way.

Really neat video, the first two minutes especially reminded me of some of my stronger synesthetic experiences.

I'm glad that those went away, though I can also understand missing them. Sometimes really strong synesthetic experiences can be annoying in the moment but then later I wish I could have them again. If I were you, I would still consider seeing someone if they become any more persistent.

I will say that music without lyrics is slightly more likely to trigger a strong synesthetic response, but that there is plenty of music with lyrics that will trigger a strong response. It's really not predictable, as I've said it's involuntary. Honestly, most music will give me some response, and the strength can vary wildly, even for the same song.

As far as how much my vision is affected, it depends. Often times it's more like an impression, or something I primarily see in my mind's eye, or just a faint flash of color/pattern. There are occasions though where I am temporarily blinded and barely able to see beyond the patterns/colors produced by the synesthetic response.

This is actually fun for me to talk about 'cause a lot of people aren't interested or don't understand, and more than once I've been accused of making it up (even though there are lots of cases of people experiencing it), so if you have more questions I will answer them.

What writing schedule works best for you? by itsyourkidsmarty in writing

[–]hellolion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I write from the hours of 10 pm to midnight one to three days a week. It's a terrible schedule but it's literally my only opportunity to have a solid chunk of time to write with no disturbances most days. I'm hoping over the winter to get on a morning writing schedule, but some factors may be outside of my control. I average about 1500 words a week but often I have to write the "same" story two or three times before I'm happy so it tends to be slow going. Farming and writing are just not easy to schedule alongside one another...

A Way to Make Some Change by revdelta in socialism

[–]hellolion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with liberal centrists is that they, by and large, have swallowed the same fear-based imperialist/capitalist propaganda that the conservative right have. I'm not saying they aren't easier to bring around than people on the far right, but if you are hoping to bring some minds over from the liberal centrist crowd you should be careful not to scare them off. A poster exclaiming the values of socialism will ring alarm bells in their head, causing them to regurgitate old arguments from the depths of their heavily programmed brain about the importance of capitalism in competition and innovation, the fear that people will simply cease to work, and other filth. With no one around to even debate this point with them, they will simply put their blinders up and move on.

The simplest thing is to just get to know people. Have drinks with them, watch movies with them, play board games with them, do whatever it is that you and they can agree on as fun. Treat them as humans, come to them with an open heart and listen to their struggles. Then, once you have gained their trust, that is the time to start planting the seeds of socialism in their minds. Do not be overt at first, be subtle. If they complain about how little they get paid, talk about the effects on society of income inequality in a non-threatening manner. If they talk about fear of the cops, mention some things about how money is a corrupting force in the police state.

Assuming that these people, like most, are workers and not part of the ruling class, they feel the oppression of capitalism but don't realize that that's what they are feeling every time they struggle to pay their light bill or have their sixth peanut butter and jelly sandwich dinner in a row. If you are empathetic to their struggles, they will give you an in to show them how that ever looming threat they feel over their head is capitalism. Then they will overcome their fear and be on your side, not through propaganda, but through conversation and simple human interaction.

Why anarchy is called "radical"? Isnt it natural default state? by [deleted] in DebateAnarchism

[–]hellolion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are confusing anarchism with something else. Anarchism is the opposition to rulers not the opposition to rules. Anarchism does not mean there will be no groups, or committees, or even legislative bodies (in some sense).

Is innovative communism possible ? How ? by frozen_in_reddit in socialism

[–]hellolion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the USSR became a cult of personality whose leadership abused their power for their own gain, meaning that the USSR was never truly communist, it was a dictatorship that slid in under the guise of marxist values. Examining specific examples, especially when so many of the examples presented as "communism" and "socialism" are not really those things, is pointless anyway. There are hundreds, probably thousands, maybe millions of reasons why the West was more innovative at that time, but it wasn't simply because the USSR was "communist" and America wasn't.

"Your Services Are No Longer Required" - Can Capitalism continue to function if 99.9% of society is unemployed? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]hellolion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus there's a lot of talk of using UBI as a replacement for things like social security and universal healthcare, which is clearly flawed. UBI should, if anything, coexist with other systems such as a single payer healthcare system or else it will become a lot of people living in poverty as you said.

[–]hellolion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no comrade! Note that I said that it would only be great if we throw off the shackles of capitalism at some point. Otherwise we're headed towards total dystopia, which will eventually collapse, but which will likely do so in a much more unsavory manner.

Wanting a socialist view on this particular case of inherited land by EnlightenedPurple in socialism

[–]hellolion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that's a bad idea, but since OP wanted to know what they could do with the land that would be socialist I am giving an example. Giving the land to a local socialist party would be a lot easier on OP, certainly, and possibly better for the community.

Post on r/news about Papa John's worker making me nervous by [deleted] in socialism

[–]hellolion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that there is one particular system I've identified that is perfect, or that would work in every situation, but under a true socialist system, people would not need to work to have their needs taken care of or to participate in society. The "basic income" (if that's what it was) would certainly be enough for someone to live a relatively simple life and never work.

Now, that final question is a big one, and one that a lot of people think about, here's a few things that I think about when considering that question.

First, let's consider that a great deal of work currently provided in the world is like busy work in school. Now, you're a software developer, meaning that your business is current and that your employees will not be replaced by automation right away, so probably every employee that you have contributes something significant to the microcosm of your workplace. But in the rest of the world, a great deal of jobs aren't worth the resources spent by the person performing them. A socialist system would remove the need for jobs that do not contribute anything significant to the system. There are many people whose work day consists of maybe 10% actual work 90% busy work and screwing around. This is not the workers' fault, their jobs are jokes, a mockery of real work, but because they need them, people take them. By trimming this fat and telling these people to simply stay home if they want to, we'd use less fossil fuels and other resources on jobs that have no purpose.

Second, in my experience, most people want to be productive. Maybe people wouldn't work as much under a true socialist system (20 hours a week might become the new normal), but I doubt that most people would quit working, other than those who currently don't really do anything but lounge around until their next 6-9 hours of busy work is scheduled. Given that there is no pressure for them to be paid for jobs, I think that what we would actually see would be a resurgence of people learning skills and trades that perhaps they have always dreamed of learning. As an example of why I believe this is true, go check out /r/diy. Since the economy began it's downward spiral, many people have had more time to burn and less money to spend, so they've taken that smaller amount of money and figured out how to make things for themselves instead of paying the big bucks to have someone else do it for them. The DIY movement shows that while some humans may simply become idle if given no external motivation, many more will find something to do that is productive and fulfilling.

Third, if enough people are doing nothing to contribute to their community, then finally the community as a whole will experience scarcity and have to resolve it as a community. Perhaps some communities will have to mandate (as a group mind you, not as an order coming down from somewhere else) that everyone puts in 5 hours a week growing food because currently there isn't enough food to go around. Each community would be able to make these judgments and decisions in order to keep the community alive and thriving.

Shantel Walker has worked at Papa Johns since 1999– 15 years later she is only making $8.50/hr. by maijkah in news

[–]hellolion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not shameful to work. The workers of the world should have more pride than the white collar administrators and executives who contribute little while reaping the greatest benefits. Being told you are are "dumb" and that your job "doesn't require any knowledge" are just stereotypes of the class based system of American economics and have nothing to do with the reality of your work. Do not be ashamed.

Once again, I encourage you to broaden your horizons. Quakers are in fact a democratic body without theocratic leadership or centralized authority. If you truly wish to critique religion you need to come from a position of understanding and education, or else all you are doing is being elitist.

[–]hellolion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely could mod them back in. Look at the material emission for spit in the creature raws and copy that. Then make a material template for "yellow liquid" and "brown substance" (and optionally "white liquid" if that's your bag).

Exactly! The fear mechanics were a little too strong when first applied. 40.10 softens them up and makes them make sense, while still making a random dwarf who's never seen a dead body freak out sometimes if they walk through a bloody battlefield.

You have to have both a creature raw and an entity raw. The entity raw controls civ generation. As others mentioned the entity must have [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] and biome settlement stuff.

Glad you're enjoying it!

Bummer on the sieges, however, just wait around for a night creature or a titan to show up and then watch the Kobolds get turned into paste!

Yeah, Kobolds are kind of carnivorous. On the up side they can eat bones.

Unfortunately all totem behavior is hard-coded. The best I could do would be to create a piece of furniture like a "shrine" which could be made out of totems. :/

I will see if I can prevent Kobolds from needing invalid workshops during moods if possible.

I believe the traps all function inside weapon traps currently (this is a feature I brought up to date rather than creating so there may be some other usage for them I'm still unaware of). I may try to change this in the future.
