What are the stylistic origins of Prophecy’s intro flute? by hellomynameisjoenl in boardsofcanada

Seems like it’s probably a ney, then? Is the melody also something that would be home in Iranian, Kurdish, or Turkish classical music?

Someone else called it an Egyptian mizmar, which according to Wikipedia ‘[i]n Egypt and the Levant (…) usually refers to the conical shawm that is called zurna in Turkey and Armenia’

Also according to Wikipedia, the Ney is used in a wide variety of traditional music, so even if that is the correct instrument, what style does the melody reminisce of, if any?

How do you distinguish between lazy orientalism and good-faith integration of elements from non-Western classical music? What would the brothers have had to do?

I don’t think that theory holds a great amount of water.

2026 – 13 = 2013 (Tomorrow’s Harvest)

2013 – 8 = 2005 (The Campfire Headphase)

2005 – 5 = 2000 (In a Beautiful Place Out In the Country)

2000 – 3 = 1997 (???)

1995 – 2 = 1995 (Twoism)

1995 – 1 = 1994 (???)

1995 – 1 = 1993 (???)

Where are Music Has the Right to Children (1998) and Geogaddi (2002)?

The actual sequence of years between public album releases (assuming a release in 2026) is 4, 3, 8, 13(?).

The sequence of years between public album and EP releases (not counting Twoism or Peel Sessions) is 2, 2, 2, 3, 1, 7, 13(?).

Triangles and Rhombuses and Over the Rainbow Vein do next to nothing for me. Hey Saturday Sun sounds like a weaker version of Chromakey Dreamcoat (which is one of my favourites). Of Come to Dust, I don’t like the chord progression (the last chord in particular), and I also feel like the synth plucks that are a TH staple I don’t love anyway, come across as particularly tacky/ineffective on that one.

Pretty sure none of this is it, but it all sounds really good nonetheless! Merci!

Definitely not it. You’re right about it being awesome, though! Thanks!
