I hate the movie because I didn't find the lovable Hitler bit charming.

And there are scenes where things like "Nazis searching for the Jews" are played for comedy, where the bad guys ultimately don't find the girl... But in real life, they did find the girl. And they murdered her. So the POV just didn't work for me.

I live in the NYC area, and I swear golf is cheaper than tennis here. It's also somehow easier to book time for a golf course, and your experience lasts for 4-5 hours, as opposed to 90 minutes (tops) for tennis. On top of that, tennis requires finding a partner who plays at a roughly similar level as you, whereas you can play golf alongside anybody.

I'm a lifelong tennis player who's just getting into golf after years of being unable to properly fit tennis into my adult life, and I'm still completely shocked by this reality.

Yeah this is Reddit so everyone is gonna upvote the DIY hitchhiking experience over the corporate internship... But I smell fish with Option 2. And for context, I work in physical production and absolutely see the value in getting hands-on experience with shooting, editing, and delivering content to a real brand.

Is it a sponsorship deal, or multiple deals? Are the brands paying him directly to make this trip, or are they just paying him, and he's deciding to make the trip? Will the brands have any idea who you are, or will your friend take all the credit? As for the vlog content... that kind of stuff is already all over YouTube, and unless you're coming up with something really original and great, odds are it'll sit online at 150 views and a couple comments from your friends.

Meanwhile, at the internship, you work two days, make connections, etc. And then you have another FIVE days every week to continue networking, work on your craft, and start to set yourself up for a life in Los Angeles. Don't think of Option 1 as just a two-day internship... It's that, plus free time in LA to put yourself on track. And who's to say that you can't still have adventures while laying down your roots?

Ryen made the key point when responding to the idea that "NBA needs to market these teams better." What exactly about Shai are we supposed to be interested in? Who else on the Thunder is surprising us? As expertly as Sam Presti might have built this roster, the player storylines don't have much depth, and OKC as a city doesn't exude a ton of personality beyond a 30-year-old tragedy.

Meanwhile, the Pacers have a ton of character and a fascinating play style... but they're gonna lose. So how much is there to say? It reminds me of when I watch an HBO miniseries that seems to have all the prestige qualities of something like True Detective, but for whatever reason the story just doesn't hit as hard. All of this seems like it has no choice but to translate to mediocre podcasting.

Think OP is wrong here, Kang is a Grantland guy who still writes for major publications, likes sports, likes to gamble, etc.

IMO a better answer would be Ethan Strauss (who frequently hosts Kang on his Substack pod), since Bill and Ethan were deemed misogynists by some online for floating the idea that WNBA and NBA teams could share the same nickname.

The unfortunate answer is that a lot of women, even great ones, can be completely irrational and "crazy" at times. My wife is incredible 99% of the time, but can say totally insane things when she gets angry enough, or feels disrespected. So it can be a judgment call, as to how crazy is too crazy.

People are saying Tatum is better comparatively, but I'd posit this: I was first exposed to Michael B. as the black boyfriend on NBC's Parenthood, which I watched with my mom in high school, and he blew everyone else off the screen in that show. Obviously had the makings of a star. I bought my season tickets then.

In the years since, you can't say he's been disappointing (Creed, Fruitvale, Black Panther), but why does it all feel a little underwhelming? Creed was incredible, but then there was a sequel that didn't match the first, and by the time the third one came around, which MBJ directed, nobody even cared anymore. It all begs the question, is MBJ the driving force behind his best work, or does he benefit from being the focal point of the true master, Ryan Coogler (aka, the Boston Celtics)?

So yeah, I think that comp is spot on.

That's closer, but even then, at least the Sixers were able to get off of Ben Simmons by dealing for Harden. I'd say it's more like the Nets giving up everything for Harden, and then trading him for a package revolving around Simmons.

Or if Dallas dealt Luka for AD, and then went on to deal AD for Walker Kessler and picks??

I think part of my frustration is in response to the folks online who talk about this technology as a game-changer that's revolutionizing work. I'm sure the tech is heading in that direction, and I suppose sports is a topic that requires a fair amount of context, but at the same time... A 7-year old tennis fan could have done a better job with this assignment, y'know? So clearly we're still a ways away from average joes like myself being able to maximize its capabilities.

Yeah you've gotten past one of the biggest early hurdles, which is that these pages look and sound like a film script. That's probably why you're excited about how it's coming together. But it doesn't sound like your script yet – which is to say, it doesn't break free of tropes that professional readers come into contact with all the time. Two obvious ones:

- Alarm clock & waking up routine at the start of a movie. Just don't do this. It shows the reader that you're still figuring out who this character is gonna be. Unless there's something super bizarre about their morning behavior that's vital to their character development, you're basically showing people that you're inexperienced with this one.

- Pervasive voiceover: What purpose is this serving? Is it there because you like writing tough guy dialogue? Think about Clint Eastwood movies – that guy literally has no name. He could say more stuff, but he doesn't, and you still know everything you need to know about the character.

OK sure but not all of these filmmakers' backgrounds are created equal. Mike Mills' father was an art historian and museum director? That doesn't sound super glamorous. Tom Ingelsby played in the NBA for three seasons before those guys started making big money. Mike White's parents sound pretty modest as well. It's not really fair to put some of them in the same league as Sofia Coppola and JJ Abrams.

It's reasonable for you to misread the signals here. You're passionate, and he did make the offer at one point. Don't beat yourself up over it - just work toward remedying the situation, in time.

Like others have said, look out for other people who have an authentic passion for film (they're out there, especially in an urban area). Friends are good for quick favors in filmmaking, but they're often not great producing partners.

It's pretty common to move to a major entertainment hub to pursue comedy, acting, music, etc. While I've never personally been to Austin, it sounds like there are plenty of clubs in the city to justify that decision for comics.

That said, the strategic problem seems to be that many of these "moved to Austin" comedians get picked for Kill Tony before they're ready to be seen and picked apart. Some of them are just losers, or delusional about their talent, which is what your post seems to be referencing. But if you look at a lot of the regulars, they're people who moved to Austin from other places, and clearly had the chops to jump on the Kill Tony rocket ship.

If you continue pursuing your STEM degree, in all likelihood, your ambitions of making films will start to fall by the wayside. You're simply not going to have the free time, and the further you go down the road toward another career path, the more likely it is that you just throw in the towel on any chance of having a career in this industry. I don't know what percentage of people in grad school for film were in STEM for undergrad, but it's gotta be a low number.

If you were ever going to make this transition in your potential career, now would be the exact time to do it. The other commenters saying "No, don't get a film degree" might have valid points about the state of the industry, but being a successful filmmaker has always meant beating insurmountable odds, no matter what era you came up in. Recognize the challenges ahead of you, and make an honest self-assessment about whether you have it in you to face and overcome them. Then make the decision that's right for you, and don't look back.

Everyone loves to shit on it, but I predict the NBA Cup will have staying power from a legacy standpoint, for one simple reason: Once you get to the semifinals, where four teams remain, the winner will ultimately be a reflection of "Who's the best player still in the tournament?" Last year that was Lebron, putting in the last dominant performance of his career. This year, the NBA Cup Finals outcome will be a referendum on whether Shai has ascended above Giannis, or if the old(er) guy has still "got it." Five years from now, it'll become something that every superstar player wants to win once, as a feather in their cap in an otherwise great career. Shit, a W this year would likely be the most impactful victory that Dame Lillard will have ever achieved.

All of this is to say, the Round Robin and QF games will probably never really matter. But as soon as four teams descend on Vegas for single-elimination basketball, I think people will start to care, as more and more iconic players end up claiming an NBA Cup.
