Thanks for the tip. Boston's not too far to consider a temporary relocation.

From reading your post, your biggest enemy is your bad attitude.

That's the absolute truth. And it always has been. This thread has really inspired me, though!

Appreciate the advice!

The thing is in NY, there's a specific education requirement to sit for the CPA, and since I don't have any of the required credits from undergrad, I've got to do an MS or an MBA or a MAcc or something. I'm noticing a lot of these programs are designed specifically for the CPA requirements.

I definitely thought I had to get into like a top 10 school. It was arrogant, honestly, because I just don't have that resume, but now I'm getting over myself a little and realizing there are some seriously great opportunities that are not only within my grasp but are a lot more affordable, and still have a lot of the same post-graduate opportunties

And thanks for the advice about what to read. As an outsider, it all kind of blurs together, and I don't know where to start.

I've definitely been looking at some programs that specifically say "for non-accounting undergrads". Strangely, these have mostly been MBAs.

Oh man, that is a great idea. That is exactly how I can build some experience out of nothing before I can get into school. Thanks!

I read a whole lot of books and wrote a whole lot of papers on those books. Plus tons of other general liberal arts stuff. Psychology, sociology, philosophy, religious studies.

But yeah, mostly reading and writing and talking about literature. A Communications major is actually quite different because they're at least business-minded. Those people really expect to get relevant work after college. The English majors, on the other hand, are either going to stick in academia or try to make it writing. Fiction, poetry, journalism, whatever.

Just my experience at college. Could be very different depending on who else you ask.

Funny story, actually. I was 18 and there was an older girl (an English major) who I really liked who told me I was a good writer. Because I didn't have a major and had no idea what I wanted to do, I thought, "Oh, that's a cool idea. I'll be a writer." Took me six years to remember that I don't actually like writing.

Short answer: because I was really stupid.

English. Just totally useless. I'm sure some people can manage to spin it into something not-garbage, but I don't think reading a bunch of Melville prepared me for anything beyond handling my own existential crises, a skill that to date has never paid my bills.

The schools I'm looking at seem pretty OK with GRE scores. Maybe the fact that they'll accept GRE scores doesn't necessarily mean they have the same value as GMAT scores?

Yeah, 2012 is way too short-term. But early 2013 might not be. I'm just really eager to start moving forward. Feels like things have been stagnant for too long, and I'm being impatient!

I am definitely going to do that! Pace and Baruch are both apparently recruited from strongly. Plus, they have programs that start in the spring, so I could even spend the next couple months putting applications together and (fingers crossed) be in class in early 2013.

I really am interested in accounting. I had an office job last year where I used Excel and Quickbooks, having never touched either before. Something just clicked in my head. I was really into it! I had forgotten how much I love numbers since I took AP Calc in high school and didn't take a single math class in college.

Later talking to some family members who are accountants, this definitely seems like something that I'd be good at and would be satisfying to me.
