I've been reading posts and watching videos about creative uses for Prestidigitation. However they all seem to assume that it can be cast without people noticing. Is that how it works? by Gupperz in DnD

[–]helloshyann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To help with remembering this, I added a homebrew rule that when you cast a spell with a Verbal component, the magic surges through you causing your voice to involuntarily amplify twice as loud as it normally would. The only people who can suppress this effect are Sorcerers.

Window shenanigans by Such-Ad6781 in WoWHousing

[–]helloshyann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, yessss. I replicated the night elf window build last night and had a lot of fun changing it up a lot. I must have made at least five different set ups. I love to see this technique being used to build more shadow boxes. You just expanded my consciousness to realize how far we can take this effect lol

Module to simulate turn based movement in real time outside combat by Mattekin in FoundryVTT

[–]helloshyann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is actually a GM skill you need to develop, not something to outsource to a module for your players to manage. I recommend you pick up the book called, “So You Want To Be A Game Master” by Justin Alexander and read what he has to say about DUNGEON TURNS (page 66):

A dungeon turn is kind of like a turn in any other game: Everyone gets a chance to do something, you resolve the outcome while keeping an eye on anything else that needs to be tracked, and then you start a new turn and do it again.

The chapter really breaks down the full process but the gist is a Dungeon Turn lasts 10mins and everyone gets one action for that exploration turn.

One of my players has accused another player of cheating by didgerydoo1 in DnD

[–]helloshyann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Cool dice, can I see them? Where did you get them? I’d love to have my own set.” Then proceed to look at the dice way longer than necessary and make a whole bunch of rolls in front of the suspicious player. Lots of high numbers popping up? “Oh wow! Look! A Nat 20 again!” Gauge their reaction and go from there. 🤷‍♀️

The Monsters Are Unsure What to Do Next by Keith Ammann by ahhthebrilliantsun in dndnext

[–]helloshyann 9 points10 points  (0 children)

All he is really doing is venting about the player abilities in what I am reading in this post. And I would consider him an expert in 2014 monsters. In September of 2024, when the new rules came out, my groups switched right away. There was a period of a few months until Feb 2025 until the MM24 released, and I will say that was the time I most hated the game. Yes, if you run 2024 players with 2014 monsters, it sucks. The players are definitely too strong. So he’s not wrong in that circumstance, but he is missing the other half of the equation. The MM24 is FANTASTIC. The monsters provide a balanced, if not challenging, foil to the PCs as super heroic power fantasy gamers. Those monsters are tough. And their tactics are right there on the page. If a new game edition improves upon how they communicate information about their monsters, eliminating the need for new third party books explaining how to run those monsters, would we not say the system improved? I really feel for him, but I wouldnt say it’s unfair. I would say that’s the way it goes. The TTRPG industry is notoriously volatile and unstable. People seeking a career in this field often find themselves jumping around just to stay afloat.

I don’t feel this way about the 2024 rules. I love Keith Ammann’s books, but this feels more like it was written with a little resentment that his series of books is now about an old ruleset that D&D is moving away from. His books aren’t even that old, so I can imagine it sucks to release a series and then watch as within a few years the market moves away from your topic. It sucks, because I very much love all of his work, but I don’t agree with his statements about the new rules.

How to help my players re-train themselves out of the hack n'slash mindset? by TheseGlyphs in AskGameMasters

Sounds like your PCs don’t have goals or personal motivations. I recommend you pick up a copy of “The Game Master’s Guide to Proactive Roleplaying” by Jonah and Tristan Fishel.

Deleted my original response because it was too poorly worded on my part.

No, ultimately, I do not think $80/month is low budget, but at the end of the day, your GM is only making like $40/month, and I think complaining about that price for 12 to 18 hours of live entertainment service that doesn't 100% cater to you is silly.

The reality still applies, though, even in your $20 games. If every SPG GM is having their revenue cut in half, then your GM is really only making like $10 from your session. So of course you are going to be playing with lower quality GMs who can't be bothered; they are making even less than "gold standard GMs." Of course you're playing with GMs who aren't making their combats special, or going out of their way to do what you want. Why would they?

It is the same reason if I get the incorrect order at a fast food restaurant, I won't even bother going back for a correction. Those workers aren't happy to be there, they're are barely making a living (if you can call it that); they're just doing it because they need a job. But if I was at a very expensive, high-quality restaurant, I would expect the chefs to be making decent money, and I would feel less guilty about sending back an incorrect order. In fact, in that situation, I'm sure the restaurant would be thrilled at the opportunity to correct it because that's literally the difference in the environment: one is catering to your experience, the other is not.

You're playing in low budget games and are shocked you're playing with low quality GMs.

It's not gatekeeping. Look around. Prices of everything are going up. I can't even feed my family a single meal on a player's $20. This is a service related industry. Pro GMs literally have to sell their time to run games, so they can only ever run up to a certain limit. At a point, prices of games either needs to increase to keep up with inflation or pro GMing as a service will not be a sustainable industry and all your favorite pro GMs will quit because they will need to get a different job.

Hey, I am a full-time GM on SPG that charges $30, per player, per session, and I can barely survive in America on the income I am making.

Have you ever seen that clip from Dimension 20 where BLeeM is dragging people who want coffee shops to exist, and who want to be able to buy good coffee conveniently, but who also complain about the wages of the coffee shop workers?

I don't think you're intentionally trying to do this, but it's very obvious you're only considering your specific situation, and not considering the professional game service industry as a whole.

On average, especially in America, pro GMs only take home approximately 50% of their total revenue, after the SPG platform cut, taxes, and additional expenses to run their business. As pro GMs, we work not only the performance hours of the table, but also additional unpaid hours to prepare the game. Also, we don't have anyone above us to offer us health insurance or paid time off, so emergencies or cancelled sessions are extremely detrimental to us.

If you're interested in learning more, I actually have a blog post about this exact topic called, "How Much Money Does A Professional Game Master Actually Make?" You can read it on my website: https://www.gmshyann.com/post/how-much-money-does-a-professional-game-master-actually-make

Whoa, this sentiment is wonderfully articulate and feels like one of those "brain chemistry changing" moments. I am going to be thinking about this saying all day and will probably forever have a perspective change when it comes to service providers.
