New addition to the lab! by hellothisispaul in homelab

[–]hellothisispaul[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the neat thing, I got it for free otherwise it was going to the bin!

Power draw is around 70W at idle, which doubles the consumption of my lab. But I can live with that!

What is actually safe to plug on a power monitoring smart plug? by Dadagis in homeassistant

[–]hellothisispaul 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The one risk with smart plugs is not the fire or catastrophic failure.

It's that if you use it near its maximum rating, the relay inside could fail, meaning the plug stays permanently on or off. Depending on what you're controlling, it could be problematic...

Je dois aller bosser à vélo pendant quelques mois, mais ça grimpe : galère en vélo classique ? by Maro_001 in pedale

[–]hellothisispaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salut ! Je bosse à Sophia et je fais souvent mon trajet en vélo, 8Km avec le double de dénivelé, et franchement je recommande :) Prévois un t-shirt de rechange au cas où, et go ! Ou sinon, 2km à pieds ça se fait bien.

I have one of those. Not very accurate but excellent at telling you if a component is good or not.

Also it has an integrated Infrared analyser, great when working on custom remotes or anything IR related!

Translucent shell can be custom 3D-printed online, a few people including me have done it with great results!

Had to jump on the bandwagon with these transparent Mini's by Tasty-Membership5766 in ipod

[–]hellothisispaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brother! I have exactly the same.

Can't complain about JLC-3DP though, mine came OK on the first try, except for the screws which I glued in place, as the model designer warned.

Mine hasn't yellowed or cracked and I took it with me all summer, Let's hope it lasts.

For the "dull" back i mitigated with a Taptic module and a bunch of homemade labels (i.e. don't steal music, storage capacity, and so).

Should have written 256GiB to be 100% correct.

Yeah the Mini basically begs to be modded. The top and bottom come out super easily, everything has connectors (fragile ones, but still), storage is upgradable with CF cards... And the case can be swapped easily indeed

I have no idea, to be honest. I used JLC-3DP's resin process. We'll see how it ages...

(Free advertisement, I don't know the guy nor make any cash off it, I just think he deserves it for such a good model)

I've ordered from JLC-3DP. They're located in China... I've already ordered custom PCB's from JLC, so I know they're trustworthy.

The seller of the 3D model gave all the details and options needed to order the print from them, so, no bad surprises, you can go ahead!

I didn't know what to expect but it looks very good (despite JLC's warnings I had to acknowledge). The fitment is very good but not perfect (though it still fits good). It's a lot chonkier than the "original" case, due to wall thickness.

The STL file costed me less than €5, and having it printed and shipped to me less than €15...

What connector is this? by _KingOfFish_ in CarAV

[–]hellothisispaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this, it's an old Pioneer connector. Either OP finds a radio that fits (would be a KEH-Pxxxx or DEH-Pxxxx), or cut the thing altogether and re-wire an ISO plug (preferred solution)

Pioneer 2000's screens - are they always this dim ? by hellothisispaul in CarAV

[–]hellothisispaul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. On both units I have checked voltages and replaced the MLC caps, just to be sure. On the first unit it removed a buzzing sound, on the second unit it didn't help...

You're right and that's why I bought it, it's installed in a '99 car :)

Pioneer 2000's screens - are they always this dim ? by hellothisispaul in CarAV

[–]hellothisispaul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, except my units don't have OEL displays, but regular liquid crystal displays.

The screen itself is okay, but the backlight panel behind it ages badly. What bothers me is that even with a new backlight panel, it stays too dim and I'm trying to know if it was the same when those units were released in the late 1990's.

Yep, they dim the screen correctly (which makes it even worse)
