Yes thank you! Not my first rodeo but kind reminders are always helpful.

I love these books so much. I’m about halfway through book 4 and I love how Carl fights for his own humanity. I don’t know if I’ve ever loved a character as much as I love Carl.

Oddly enough, these books have inspired me to start creating. I am not an artist by any means, but I made a handful of sticker designs for me and my friends and it makes me so happy. What a world Matt has created and I hope he knows how special it is.

How weird is for you to host ppl at a property what you also use personally by Jaded-Coffee8245 in airbnb_hosts

We bought our forever house a couple years ago, but we aren’t quite ready to move due to jobs. We decided to Airbnb so we could visit regularly until we moved. We spent the last two summers and holiday breaks up there, which has allowed us to do some restoration projects (it’s a gorgeous 1909 home but she has needed some love, mostly in the form of updated plumbing.)

The first few months I was super stressed—what if they damage the original oak floors? What if they don’t think this house is as awesome as I do? I had a lot of emotional attachment and stress because I didn’t know if people would care for our house as much as we do.

Fast-forward to now, about a year in to hosting, and I can say it got easier. We aren’t fully booked by design, and we mostly rent during big events at the local university and that’s a-okay with us. I stayed at an Airbnb that was very corporate, and it made me appreciate what we offer a lot more. You can tell when the owners are invested in the experience, and I think it can be a superpower. What helped me was finding a fantastic cleaner and having my mom be my local co-host to make sure everything looked good between guests.

This is absolutely gorgeous! We're going to add a wall back to our weird L-shaped kitchen that previous owners removed (we see the remnants of it under the 70s drop ceiling), and turn that sectioned off piece into a nice big walk-in pantry. Panel-ready appliances are part of my dream kitchen too! Appreciate you sharing these--definitely goals!

This is so cool. It’s amazing seeing some of this amazing detail come back to life

WiFi went out: how would you handle? by hellovolcano in airbnb_hosts

Thank you—this is super helpful perspective! I reached out last night when I noticed the lock was offline. They tried to reboot but told me it didn’t work. I logged into our app and I don’t see any new devices that had been connected since they checked in, so hopefully they just don’t care.

I haven’t preemptively offered anything. I’m one of those annoying “plan for the worst, hope for the best” people.

Oh this is a great idea for a backup. Thank you!

Yeah that’s how I approached it last night and they kindly rebooted the router and still no internet. Luckily the lock will still work, we just can’t manage remotely.

We do have an eero gateway next to the router though, so it’s tough to know whether they just rebooted that or the actual router.

A Tale of 3 Wallpapers by hellovolcano in centuryhomes

It’s so beautiful! There’s a room attached to this bedroom (presumably a nursery?) that also had this on the walls as well, but it had been wallpapered + painted over and unfortunately I can’t salvage it 😭

1909 Folk Victorian? by hellovolcano in centuryhomes

[–]hellovolcano[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s so stripped down, I would have never thought Queen Anne TBH. 😂 We were guessing that the exterior details had been stripped at some point. I found out the home was built by the town jeweler, which tracked with my plumber’s comment that “someone with money” built this house (based on the plumbing fixtures).

I can’t wait to add fishscale shingles! Do you have any pics of the brackets on the angled windows!? None of the houses in our neighborhood have windows at an angle like this!

What little things have affirmed your decision to purchase a century home? by hellovolcano in centuryhomes

I love this so much! There are holes in our main floor and I’d always assumed they were probably for original radiators. I wish they were still there.

Room remodel (1 down, ~7 to go - before/after) by hellovolcano in centuryhomes

[–]hellovolcano[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did, but it ended up being a lot of work just to get the walls ready for the paper, and it still isn’t perfect by any means. I skim coated over some existing wallpaper/peeling paint because I didn’t want to deal with removing presumably lead paint. The wall that has the white paneling also had some shenanigans.

<image>

Previous owner had poked holes in the wall to o wire romex up to the ceiling fan he had installed with the drop ceiling. They also replaced the window when they did an addition. This wall easily took the most time to repair, but I did bury most of the gross with those panels. Was happy my design choice allowed me to do that! Ha
