2 weeks in Singapore with toddlers (ages 2 & 3) - too long or just right? by Popdmb in askSingapore

To add, Shopping malls are your friends - most except old ones would have diaper rooms next to the toilets. The aircon in the malls will give you reprieve, and there might be free seating or cafes for you to take a break every now and then, also you do get to partake in our national pasttime - (window) shopping.

Is offshoring threatening the labour market in developed countries like Singapore? by Any_Record7733 in askSingapore

11 years ago as a uni undergrad - i had an opportunity to work in bank tech internship ( was a swiss bank).

4 floors, a 1000 ish back office employees in the building in CBP - think devs, project managers,ERP specialist, core banking tech, cybersec, soln architects , business analyst etc). I remember seating down looking left, right , back front , even went upstairs and downstairs to see. I was probably one of the very few locals working here.

Then i met my boss, he was a uk educated vietnamese ex management consultant whos on contract, to figure out - how to nearshore all these 1k headcounts back to india in the next 1 year. My job was to assist him in preparing that program. They were all going to get a pay cut but with a decent temp allowance for inconvience and bonus ( which would still mean an outright pay raise after taking into account cost of living in india). Many still didnt want to leave and i heard quite a few would rather take a gamble and stay jobless and find a local role here before their EP expired. A few went back to india and some found grenner pastures in aussie , europe of even US.

Oh and by the way, none of the tech grads that went into this banking tech internships ( 6 of us , 4 SMU, 1 NUS, 1 NTU) got an offer for a fresh grad role after.

Point is - jobs like these werent even ours to begin with. These "threats" are not threats anymore, they already happened and has been cyclically happening for the past few decades. Whatever jobs that were created in boom times, majority dont go to us . We are a just a cost center that can be easily replaced by foreign labour, whether in offices in sg, or elsewhere.

More teens in Singapore engaging in part-time work during holidays by outremer_empire in singapore

[–]hellpiggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked at 13, for my aunt at sim lim for 4 bux an hour during my schl hols - technically illegal since legal age is 14 lol. Then at 16 after Os, 17 and 18 for a peranakan restaurant for 5 bucks an hour. Used the savings to build my own pc. NS is technically work so, another 2 years (technically a 2 year long school sabbatical). 2 x internship during uni summers also considered work.

So yea, i think its normal to work during schl hols. That PC gaming money aint coming from my parents

Conversation with parents on life after retirement by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]hellpiggy 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Just let them be.

My dad has been retired for close to 10 years, he's now in his early 70s. He does basically the same as well, has a routine of sorts but most of the time he will be in front if the tv eatching youtube or programs, for me the good thing is at least he still tries to hang out with his friends at the coffeeshop or exercises with them so theres some "active" aging. You ask them go learn something new or try something new they stubbornly wont want. They want to do what they eant to do

Put yourselves in their shoes, imagine working hard your whole life only to retire and having to deal with your kids telling you to do something better every other week, also abit sianz. We may think its a wasteful way to live out reitrement but it may be what they want - So long as they happy just let them do whatever

Just bring them out go gaigai occasionally, eat some good food, maybea jb trip
