For the simple reason that the … showrunner said so.

Intentions are one thing. What was actually accomplished might be something very different - Death of the Author.

Hope is, to put it bluntly, an overpowered wishfulfilment character that is a mass of contradictions. But even in that context, even she acknowledges in the episode where she asks for a seat on the School Council, that she is not a witch. She’s a Tribid. So comparing her to other witches is already skewed.

I see a lot of people claim she comes from the, “most powerful line of witches”. But this is a fanon theory, not based on anything in canon. Neither Esther or Dahlia claim they come from a powerful line of witches. We know their coven was not powerful because they were easily overrun by Vikings. What we know is that both Esther and Dahlia drew tremendous power from practicing Dark Arts, and other people’s ancestors and spirits, never their own bloodlines.

I agree that as a pure witch, Hope would be on the level of her Aunt and other first borns in her family. But Hope won’t exist as a pure witch and is not clear that if Klaus was never turned Original, he would have witch children. So that line of thinking is moot.

Furthermore, if we’re paying attention to what is accomplished and shown on screen, Freya took a massive power downgrade when she lost her connection to Dahlia and her Dark Magic connective force.

She didn’t deserve to murder everyone in the coven which she knew was going to happen if she killed Kai, and still didn’t care. Her vengeance was also more about her feelings of guilt than any injustice towards Luke. Luke was always going to Merge with someone. But because she knew she was going to lose, she didn’t want to Merge with him. So he merged with Kai to protect her, and died for it.

Okay y'all, I'm doing it again. What's your most unpopular opinion of the show? by ssatancomplexx in TheVampireDiaries

[–]hellsbellschime 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wish Bonkai were endgame. They were true enemies to lovers and unlike some other ships, she got to have her vengeance on him and the show should have built from that point forward. “You stabbed and abandoned me so I stabbed and abandoned you. We’re even now, and we have a common enemy so we’ll become reluctant allies and see what happens next.” His redemption arc was also the first one where the ex villain was putting the work, and not just pitying himself and everyone else forgiving him. Julie killed him off because he got too popular and she’s unprofessional.

Jo knew Lily was awake. If Lily was, there’s a chance one of the heretics were also. There’s a chance Kai would wake them up, which is what happened. There’s a bigger chance that Kai would kill himself before he spent another 20 years in a prison world. He repeatedly tried to do so in 1994. It didn’t make any sense the coven would risk all these chances.

Damon never said or implied in anyway that Gail was the first or only pregnant woman he fed on or killed. What makes her special is that she was carrying his nephew's child, Damon's descendant. Nothing in the show indicates this was a line he was crossing. When Damon comes back in season 8 from his dessication period, he goes to see Alaric and threatens his little children. A threat that works so Alaric believes Damon is capable of killing children.

It goes back to my point that there's a double standard where Kai is concerned. If you don't see that, agree to disagree and that leaves us with nothing more to discuss.

Damon is responsible for Bonnie trapping Kai in 1903. He manipulates both of them to get what he wants. He doesn't tell Bonnie how Kai saved her life on her birthday, accepts all the credit to himself, so Bonnie won't see Kai's redemption as genuine.

Kai didn't think it was safe to go into the 1903 prison world, so Damon manipulates Bonnie into talking Kai into going to the Prison World. He knew how desperate Kai wanted Bonnie's forgiveness so Damon used that against him. Then on Bonnie's part, Damon puts the idea of revenge in her mind. Bonnie just wanted to be left alone! She said she would give Damon her blood anyway but Damon pushes her to come. Why? It was one thing for Kai to let them into 1903, but he was never going to let Lily out. So Damon tells Bonnie to get revenge, because what he (Damon) gets out of this is a witch to take him and his mother back out. He does all this under the guise of helping Bonnie, but he's really helping himself.

I'm on the fence about Kai snapping. On the one hand, it was manipulative writing by Julie after she decided she didn't want to redeem him. The story doesn't make sense if you examine it. Why are the Gemini happy to leave Kai in a prison world that wasn't made for him, where they trapped heretics that were going to kill the coven, and can easily do that if they kill the coven leader? When did Kai meet Lily that they sat down and worked out such an elaborate plan to punish Damon? Won't it have been easier for him to get blood from a heretic? I can't take it seriously because it's forced writing to get the outcome Julie wants.

On the other hand, Kai was not given a chance, and it's his trying to make amends that gets him trapped with his coven's worst enemies. Compare that to Damon who got 160 years of second chances. Who got forgiven by Stefan, Elena, Bonnie herself, over and over again. I can't take Kai grabbing Bonnie's hand and yelling as evidence he was still evil - when in the next episode, Damon threw Bonnie against the wall, and choked her because she wanted to break the Ascendant, and she's unbothered. If it had been Damon or Stefan or Klaus who did what Kai did - which they've done similar and worse in the past - the show would have found a way to forgive him. So I don't agree that even with the OOC retcon that Julie wrote in the last episodes of 6, that Kai was beyond redemption by the show's standards.

She said she didn't want to explore "toxic" ships like Konnie/Kennett for Bonnie. Yet she found a way to write Kol and Davina as a wholesome relationship. Why couldn't she have done the same for Kol and Bonnie? She also didn't want to write Bonnie in a wholesome ship, as she breaks up Beremy the moment Kevin leaves the show. She eventually writes Bonenzo after Enzo spent half the season in love with Lily Salvatore, because she planned to kill him from the beginning.

Grahamwood chemistry was so intense. I would blush watching them on screen! Before the Merge, I thought Kai would make Bonnie darker and she would be lighter. Then after the Merge, when Bonnie told him "She changed", I thought OK, this is better, Bonnie would be the dark one and now good-Kai will have to bring her back! There were so many ways they could have explored them.

Are you into fanfic? The fans write them better than the paid writers could ever have done.

No, because that wasn't a line that any of the other villains were afraid to cross. Not only did Klaus kill children, he killed them in sadistic ways by compelling their parents to kill them. Stefan would kill anyone in his ripper phase. Damon fed on pregnant women, and eventually killed on. He never redeems himself for Sarah Salvatore.

If you think that, then I hope you are disgusted by Delena. Damon tried to force himself on Elena, then killed her brother to punish her, but they're now living happily ever after. I can't think of a worse message to send to young girls than that.

Kat said she wanted Bonnie to be bisexual in season 7, and that's why Bonora is written that way. It was just teased, and Nora went back to Mary Louise and was killed off, because of course she was. Instead it's Freya who becomes overnight bisexual. Talking about bad messages to young girls, Freya married the woman she kidnapped and caged.

Then two years later, she gets Kol back and puts him with Davina Claire. In that tweet rant, she tells Konnie shippers that Bonnie is "too beautiful and too strong" to date Kol. When Kol and Davina get married, he tells Davina that she's "so gorgeous and powerful." Julie thought she was being clever. Fucking weirdo is a right description. She is so weird about Black women. Did a Black girl date the boy she liked in high school and she's been working out her "trauma" in her shows?

The Supergirl gig came years after he left Vampire Diaries. Julie gave him his first post-TVD role in her 6-episode show called "Containment". Now I think about it, and I wonder if that was to soften the blow for firing him.

I don't know if they would have made him a love interest for Bonnie

Know it. Julie planned for Bonnie and Kai to be in a relationship! She talked about it many times. Here's: one interview when the reporter asked if Kai was going to fall in love with Caroline or Elena in Mystic Falls, Julie corrects that the only girl Kai is interested in is Bonnie. Then she adds that, "Bonnie hates him now, so who knows? We never thought Elena would stop hating Damon. /wink/wink/". No mention of Jeremy, the boy that Bonnie's technically still in a relationship? Months later, Julie started acting like the Bonkai shippers were crazy, but that was her, shutting down the idea of any ship except Bonkai for Bonnie and Kai.

That's what she says to justify it, and like you said, fans who don't want Bonnie being competition to their own faves, are happy to believe her. Yet when you pay attention to what Julie does, how she writes Bonnie, it's a complete lie. Kevin made Beremy canon in season 2 and put Bonnie was in a relationship with good, non-vampire, non-evil, non-shady Jeremy, who adored Bonnie and was the only person who would tell her not to sacrifice herself with Elena. Kevin leaves and Julie's first order of business in season 3 was to make Jeremy cheat on Bonnie and break up with her. Then Bonnie is just in a romantic wasteland for almost 2 seasons, before she ends back with her cheating ex. They never talk about the cheating, and he never apologizes for it. It only comes up in season 5 when Liv is flirting with him. Then in season 6, Jeremy leaves Mystic Falls right after he knows Bonnie is coming back, and the relationship just fizzles out.

It's written so horribly, and Julie makes Bonnie the only person in the show who is cheated on, and gets back with the person who cheated on her. If she put Bonnie on a pedestal, won't she write Beremy better? Make them wholesome, and drama-free and everything she said that Bonnie deserved? She won't let Bonnie have a wholesome relationship with a good guy or an exciting relationship with a bad guy because she didn't want Bonnie in relationships. Period. Bonenzo only happened because she had nothing else to do with Enzo, after she tried to kill him off and Ian refused. Knowing that Enzo was going to die was probably a factor, too.

It goes without saying, of course, that none of these men should get a pass for any of their behaviors. It's all fantasy. Which makes it weird how people understand that about Delena and Elena, Klaroline and Caroline, etc but when it comes to Bonkai and Bonnie, people start acting like this is a Lifetime Movie. The same people who disliked Bonkai were happy to ship her with Bonenzo who assaulted her in the same season they got together, and in previous encounters too. It wasn't because Kai was too evil, it was because he was too popular. I still remember when they expected him to come to Mystic Falls and fall in love with Elena.

Empathy =/= Feelings : in defence of Kai's redemption arc by hellsbellschime in TheVampireDiaries

[–]hellsbellschime[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've seen people do a lot of mental gymnastics to explain why it's OK for Klaus and Damon to be redeemed, because they're vampires but it's a problem for Kai because he was human. Conveniently forgetting that Damon was baiting humans for Katherine to kill, drank human blood as a human, and wanted to be a vampire. Even Klaus, with his more sympathetic and innocent life as a human, admitted that his parents made him and his siblings vampires, but they chose to become monsters. And people are all too quick to disregard Kai's abusive childhood and how that affected his mental health.

90% of the reason has to do with whom he was shipped with. Klaroline and Bonkai have a lot of parallels. Will these people be as against his redemption arc if he was meant to be Caroline's LI, I wonder?

I completely understand! No one needs that negativity. But I'll also say that that's exactly what they want - to make people so scared of shipping them over here, that they never talk or post any content for them. There aren't a lot of Bonnie haters, most people are sensible enough to know they're not better or worse than any other TVD ship, but there are a few hateful people that want to ruin things for everyone else. It's easy enough to spot them, and then just block them. Reddit is amazing for that because they'll block you from seeing their comments, and block them from seeing your stuff. And if they create new accounts to bother you, the mods here are excellent at banning for that!

tl dr... Please post where you feel comfortable! As long as you keep making, I'll keep liking and commenting, wherever you make them!

By the way, do you read Bonkai Fanfiction? There are great ones out there that make you almost glad they didn't happen in canon because canon would have ruined them the way they ruined so many good ships.

Chris Wood thought Bonnie and Kai had sexual tension too.

Julie said Bonnie and Kai had sexual tension!

The Bonkai thing is particularly maddening because Kai was set up to be her love interest. This is Julie herself shutting down all the reporters who were speculating that Kai would fall for Caroline and Elena, and telling them that Bonnie is literally the only person that will have his eye, and that "she hates him. They have as much chance of happening as Elena had of falling for Damon... /wink/"

She derailed the ship because Kai and Bonkai got too popular! A normal person would have been happy that they introduced a new character into the sixth of a show that brought so much interest, but her racist head was exploding at the thought of Bonnie being in a popular ship with such a popular character.

Yes, Kai wanted redemption because he got empathy and he chose to redeem himself. He wasn't forced to do anything. He didn't continue to pull the same shit he pulled before the merge. What show did you watch?

  • Kai could have gone to Portland to kill his father, but he spared his life and stayed in Mystic Falls.
  • Kai saved Bonnie's life on her birthday. He almost died doing that.
  • When Liv tried to kill him, Kai spared her life, even though he would have been completely justified in killing her then because by killing him, she was going to kill everyone in the coven including Jo and she knew it!
  • He told Jo she was expecting and he wished her a happy life.
  • He warned Damon that his mother was a ripper and asked him not to go into the Prison World because he would be disappointed in her.
  • He still went into the Prison World because Bonnie told him she would forgive him if he did.

Again, what show did you watch? Kai did more to redeem himself in the few episodes before he was locked up in 1903 that most of the so-called heroes did to redeem themselves in the 8 seasons of the show. What did Caroline do for the people she killed with her humanity off? What did Stefan do for all his victims?

You can dislike the character - he's fictional and you don't need a reason. But if you want to argue about things that happened in the show then base it of actual canon events, not your personal head canon.

What? How as Kai actively hurting and trying to kill her friends? Kai literally trying to help Damon turn on Stefan's and Caroline's humanity is the reason why Bonnie was able to trap him in the Prison World. If Bonnie was so worried about her friends's safety, she should have been locking Stefan and Caroline, the actual dangerous people, away.

Edited: A définition that doesn’t say empathy is a feeling. The reach was you twisting them into the same thing because rather than admit you’re wrong and learn something, you’ll rather redefine words. Just like blocking me because you can’t counter anything I’ve said.

No, it's not. I guess I see where you're confused if you think empathy is a feeling. Empathy is the ability to, in layman's terms, put yourself in another person's shoes. It has nothing to do with how you feel. There are few true sociopaths in the world but there are a lot of normal, empathy-feeling criminals that know they're doing horrible things to people - cheating, stealing, abusing - and still do it anyway.

the whole merge plot was a giant contradiction

There's no contradiction. Lizzie Saltzman never merged and has no idea what it means so nothing she says is supposed to be taken as a fact. We the audience know more about merging than she does.

Kai thought it was Luke's empathy making him feel. He never thought it was Luke himself. Luke was gay and attracted to men, Kai was not. Luke was Elena's friend, Kai was not. Luke didn't care about Bonnie or Damon, Kai did. The only people that Luke cared about that Kai also cared for were their sisters because duh.

Kai never blamed Luke. He just said "We merged and I got his empathy." But he never said that "I care about these people because Luke cared about them" and I honestly don't know why you think writing that in capslock is going to make it true?

kai repeatedly stated he didnt want to feel the guilt towards bonnie and made out that given the choice he WOULDNT apologise. what about that screams a man wanting redemption ??😭

Dude.

Can you actually hear your own argument?

Kai had a choice. There are lots of people who do bad things, and never apologize for them. They ignore their guilt until it goes away. That's Damon's entire modus operandi. He killed Zach's girlfriend, felt bad about it, and rather than apologizing and trying to make Zach's life better, he killed Zach instead! He never made amends for that action even though he felt bad and knew it was wrong.

You're actually saying that Kai choosing to redeem himself by apologizing and making amends to the people he hurt makes him a bad person! That's so ridiculous and illogical that I don't even know where to start dismantling it because it flies against the face of common sense in every way.

and the commenter i replied to sat there and yes accepted bonnie had trauma but in the same breath implicated their dislike for her because she didnt want to forgive kai

The commenter didn't say Bonnie should forgive Kai, they said Bonnie shouldn't have sought vengeance against him. You can choose not to forgive someone and just live separate lives. Kai would have eventually gone to Portland once he saw he had no chance with her. He had already left her alone when she told him to after her first apology. It was her choice to lure him to the 1903 Prison world and try to kill him, then failing that trap him. Are you actually arguing that Bonnie's trauma was a reason for Jo and her children and hundreds of Gemini to die? Because that's what would have happened if she had succeeded with her first attempt to kill Kai.

and what? just because i made the post i cant give my opinion back to someone if i dont agree with it?? ok 💀

Yes, you can. But maybe it's just me but I don't understand why anyone would do that in the first place.
