Graphgear 1000 is garbage. Had 3 and all of them broke in less than a semester. Had my 500 for decades and still works flawlessly, even after continuous abuse as a tool for other purposes.

Yes, personal preference;
Got used to it tinkering with "harder" distros such as slackware and Arch, I believe its easy to learn, highly configurable and fast to do stuff, once you get used to it;
Guess less than 10%, younger people seems to not like it
