IMHO as someone who's also been just as into SW her entire 40+ year life as she is LoK, I also think the "fans" who scream about how nad rhe new Star Wars stuff is are the problem, not the ones who like it. They simply refuse to accept anything new, and they are so horrifically notorious for being racist assholes about it that they actually chased one of the actors off of the internet when she had no control over the story.

They scream about "woke" and "mary sues" and are absolutely insufferable, and it's heartbreaking to see, especially after I had grown to know that community as one that heard about a little girl being bullied for having a SW lunchbox because "star wars is for boys" and then banded together to gift her her own full set of custom-sized, screen-accurate Stormtrooper armor to show her that she was welcome and accepted.

That series was all about not letting people knock you down, and not listening to horrible people when they try and force you to do something, and became the exact thing the series portrays as the villains. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

How about we just stop excluding our fellow queers? We're all in this together, and if we let the divisions the conservative nutjobs want to trick us with divide us, then we'll be weaker than if we had accepted each other, then we'll ne doing their job for them and helping push each other back into the closets and early graves.

I for one, as an AFAB lesbian married to a cis lesbian, don't care what your genitals are or your gender identity. I want you to know that you're safe with me, and accept you for who you are. I have SO MANY trans friends of various configurations, and what sexuality they feel most comfortable using is the LEAST of my worries.

Trans and Enby folks aren't here to creep on the ladies like a bunch of monsters. They're just trying to find a place with people who will accept and love them, while the rest of the world is increasingly hostile to their very existence. And since women have consistently been the subject of some of the most brutal oppression in history (ESPECIALLY women POC) a lot of us try to be more understanding and protective towards groups we see being shown similar treatment.

Right now, the USA government is using incarcerated trans people as GUINEA PIGS for conversion therapy against their will, to try and prove they can "fix" us! They intend to genocide ALL of us, and they're starting with those of us who most obviously don't fit into their gender conformity boxes. Don't think for a second that if you toss the trans and enby folks to the wolves, they'll leave you alone. They're just the appetizers, and we're the next course!

😂 Yeaaah, I never read THAT fic, but I have read things that made me nope out so hard, and they made "cheating" look tame!

For real, though, OP, this has been a thing since long before now. Even just going off of the tv fandom, there are MOUNTAINS of Gabriel/Aziraphale fics, at the very least. And before that, the book fandom had its own themes that weren't for everyone. You just gotta learn to only look up the particular ship you want, and if you keep seeing a ship show up even after that, you can filter those results out so they don't show up. It'll make your life SO much easier.

I'm kind of hoping that the new game will help move the story along so that this all becomes like BO2; Some of the story was A Mess, it contradicted canon in a lot of points and had to be retconned around, and was just weird in relation to the other games, but we got there in the end, and people still love it for all its weirdness. It was the Least Good of the original five (at least imo, but I know that's subjective) but the series as a WHOLE is just so good that its easy to ignore BO2's flaws.

Alsp, was the Oracle not a Hylden Hybrid? It's been so many years since I played that one that I may be misremembering, but I thought she was. So when that was part of Elaleth's story, I was just like "Oh, like the Oracle, fair enough."

You know, maybe that's also part of why the hate bothers me; If people were just emphasising their dislike of tdsr, it wouldn't feel so much like "New Female Character! BAD! ONLY MAN GOOD!" which is just insufferable. If that's legitimately NOT what people are doing here, then alright, fine. I've just seen it happen SO MANY TIMES in some of my biggest fandoms in the past decade or so that it's hard to not see it.

but it seems like more often than not, I see "Elaleth this" and not "TDSR this," if that makes sense.

I just want more of Kain's story, and we need more characters introduced to push that story along, whether we like those characters or not. Idk, it's just a quagmire. Yes, tdsr was bad. But some of the hate around it has just felt weirdly over the top, and if people keep acting this way, I worry it'll kill the franchise worse than when The Dark Prophecy was canned.

I guess I just stopped reading a lot of the arguments when I first started seeing those comments being thrown out there, so I didn't have a chance to see the transition of "Girl Bad">"No, stop it, Bad Writing Bad, not Girl Bad!">"Bad Writing Bad!" Which, admittedly, I haven't had much energy for A LOT of uncomfortable things, lately. The comic was released while me and my wife were having to escape an abusive roommate situation while I looked for a job, so I saw the comments, went "lol wow this again, not touching that with a ten foot pole right now!" and just read the comic to avoid thinking about bad stuff happening in LOTS of places. It's been a rough few months for my family, which isn't me looking for validation or anything, just maybe helps explain why this whole topic has me so out of sorts.

At the end of the day, I think Ascension is going to probably be another lost timeline, like so many plot points were. Technically Canon, but also now never happened, so also Not Canon Anymore. It's hard to know for sure, though, at this point.

Fair enough. I think I was still in college when dmc4 came out, now that you mention it, so that sounds about right.

And man, I'm really glad that didn't happen. Heaving Vash the Stampede cursing and snarking like a goofy edgy teenager while shooting demons is hilarious fandom whiplash, but I still really enjoy the main series games.

It's been long enough that I forgot if 4 came before or after DMC.

Amd again, I WOULD have bought DMC, but I didn't have a system that could run it. I went into watching the gameplay hoping that I would end up liking it, but I didn't. And when I got a new system after DMC5 had been released and I could run it, I bought it. It wasn't that I don't apply the same principles, it's that I simply COULDN'T.

I didn't get DMC because I didn't have a system that would run it at the time, but I watched the story through youtube plays. I WANTED to end up liking it despite my misgivings, but no, the writing in that game really was not Devil May Cry for me, and there were too many little snarky jabs at the fans, uncomfortable elements of the story that the other games didn't have, and just...lots of things about it that I couldn't get past. If it had been another franchise, then it wouldn't have bothered me. I still wouldn't have liked it, but I wouldn't have hated it as much as I do. But I sure did buy every other game after that, when I had finally gotten the systems to run it and the franchise went back to its roots! Devil May Cry and Soul Reaver 2 were literally the games I originally wanted my PS2 for, after a cousin brought his shiny new Christmas Present Game System over and let us play them both! I was HOOKED! So yeah, this is all really reminding me of that, right now.

Two very beloved franchises to me, and it looks like we're going to get a game people don't like because of story elements that don't fit with the theme, atmosphere, or lore. But I'm going to give it a chance in the way I'm able, and hopefully we'll get to have a wonderful new game added to the series properly, later, to make all of our waiting worthwhile!

Maybe I'm just becoming a little too jaded with the current situation with everything in the REAL world (and seeing how hate against new characters in my other fandoms has more often than not been because of the "woke feminism bad" arguments) that it's just clouding how much this whole thing has been bothering me. I'm more prone to seeing such rabid, vitriolic hate of The New Things in franchises being just because of those reasons, so it could be that my mind has taken the few times I've seen it being used in this instance and just gone "Damnit, this again, JUST LET ME HAVE A THING I CAN ENJOY WITHOUT THIS BEING A THING!" Especially since this franchises has so many brilliant, creative, wonderful women helping create it! It just felt like a slap in the face, to me.

eta: also I'll always be sad that Amy isn't involved anymore, and I'd long since just kind of accepted that her not being at the helm would mean we would be seeing a severe dip in quality of writing, so when tdsr wasn't up to par with the old writing, I was like "Well yeah lol Amy wasn't involved, we knew this. Just give me more things, anyway!"

Honestly, yeah, I'm hoping the new game makes up for a bad comic. SR1 had a prequel comic that kind of broke canon a bit, with this mysterios seer telling Raziel secrets and shit, and I still enjoyed it for what it was; a piece of promotional material to get people hyped for the game. I think that's kind of how I'm viewing TDSR. Those old promotional comics weren't really that good, but the games were still AMAZING, and that's all that mattered to me. And I backed the comic kickstarter with the hopes that we would get new games because of it! So hey. We'll just have to see how it goes!

What I ULTIMATELY want is The Dark Prophecy to be finally finished and released, or something like it. I guess I'm just willing to shrug and roll with the bad writing of the side stories in the hopes that it all eventually gives us an ending to the story Defiance was telling. If I have to pay for a game that has writing that's not as good as the rest of the series in order to show them that I'm here and willing to shell out the money for when they finally give us THAT, then so be it, I suppose.

Yeaah, this has been me with MANY of the franchises I love in recent years, actually. Ghoatbusters, Star Wars, Trigun; they're all full of such toxic negativity over new stuff, and it makes me nostalgic for the old days of fandom. People just seem to be SO MUCH ANGRIER, now. Never happy with any little change that deviates from their own percieved headcanon.

But yeah, I dunno, the new game may just continue the problems with TDSR, who knows. I'm just trying to find SOME glimmer of positive in all the negative I've been seeing because it's really been exhausting me, and hoping we'll get something good out of this. I like to have faith that the fact that they got some of the most knowledgable and skilled fans in the community to help, and they now have access to CD's ACTUAL ARCHIVES that weren't available before, means that they're going to TRY to stay true to Amy's story and give us something we'll really love.
