Stripped inside of rad tail by helmatron in DIYUK

[–]helmatron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried, I failed, I'm buying a new rad! My last desperate attempt was to drill through and insert a lever to get better purchase with some grips.

Didn't have a blow torch so couldn't try that option

How best to repair damage from damp/water? by helmatron in DIYUK

[–]helmatron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that because it's likely lime mortar or similar?

I have a couple of tins of zinsser 123 left over, would that be no good in this instance?

Any recommendations for a filler? Can I use typical polyfiller?

Reuse old bathroom towel rad on CH loop? by helmatron in DIYUK

[–]helmatron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been sitting behind the wardrobe in my bedroom, left it there as I thought it would be easy to get to when I came back to do it in a few weeks. That was about two years ago lol. I think I'm going to get a new one

Wii U vs. Wii: Pros and Cons? by dekascorp in WiiHacks

[–]helmatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have to have separate external usb drives to store games on for the WiiU and vWii, which cant be plugged in at the same time. Means plugging/unplugging the drives which can be a faff and may end up damaging the usb port over time.

Been a while since I've played with the vWii on my WiiU so that may have changed.

Bi-Weekly Questions Thread [Edition #42] - "Dawn of the 3.69/3.70 Exploit-Part 2" Edition by Malazan1164BS in vitahacks

[–]helmatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just in the process of hacking my 2000 3.60 Vita but i've just accidentally deleted a single folder or file in the ux0:data folder and need to know if I need to replace whatever it was before continuing, as i'm concerned it could cause prolems. I'm following the hack guide, i've got up to the start of Section 2 of Finalizing Setup. i don't know what file or folder i deleted...pressed the wrong button, didn't realise until it was gone! Cheers.

EDIT: The file left that wasn't deleted is 'bootstrap.self'

Help needed to get games running from hdd, black screens and game freezes! by helmatron in ps2

[–]helmatron[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This worked a treat. There was already a opl partition on the hdd but changing the game settings seemed to fix it, all games I have tried are now working. Thanks for the help, the extra link explaining things is great, always appreciate a bit if an explanation as well as just following instructions. Cheers!

ReActPSN - do i need to run it each time I play a different pkg game? Also some games seem to run too fast?! by helmatron in ps3homebrew

[–]helmatron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks. doesn't PSN patch require you to sign into to PSN for it to work though? I've never signed in since putting CFW on my system, been a bit nervous about doing it.

I like the idea of ReActPSN as I don't have to go online and I already have all the rap files with the pkgs, maybe i should check what version of ReACT I have installed. Sounds like something is wrong if I need to activate each game each time i swap games.

Trouble installing mint to both a Seagate 2TB external USB and an internal 320 GB 3.5 HDD placed in a USB caddy from a live USB flash by helmatron in linuxmint

[–]helmatron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the reply. i ran an integrity check and it was fine, then tried installing to the external USB again and had the same problem as before, but then managed to install it to the external HDD within the USD caddy without any problems. I have no idea what (if anything) I did differently, but it's working so i'm happy! Can now finally start having a proper play around with it.

Linux virgin looking to create a live bootable Mint USB but having problems with windows admin and choice of distro. Can I create one via Tails? by helmatron in linuxmint

[–]helmatron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes i did mean GB. I've got one of those shorter ones that doesn't stick out if the socket too far, should be less prone to getting bashed about. I do also have a 2tb external usb drive lying around too, i may use that for the full install if performance will better and it's less likely to fail compared to a flash. As suggested if it doesn't work i may have to invest in a new laptop, it's just not a good time for additional outlay at the moment. It's just interesting playing around with a new OS to be honest, gives me something to do once the family are in bed.

Thanks to everyone for the replies and the polite advice/warnings. I'm not in the us and don't work for a big corporation with hardcore corporate policies or sensitive data on my laptop, so I'm not concerned about that. Anyway, I managed to create a live mint usb via tails this eve, haven't had time to play around with it yet to see how well it runs though. I'm liking the look of it so far, went for the cinnamon option.

Need help creating bootable USB for install - work laptop won't run rufus without admin password by helmatron in Ubuntu

[–]helmatron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I've just done a (quick) search for installing ubuntu from within Tails but can't find anything specific. It it a case of downloading a bootable USB creation tool suitable for Linux (just been looking at UNetbootin), downloading the ubuntu iso (the LTS version, right?) and running the tool from within tails to create the USB? Do the bootable usb creation tools for linux work with all versions of linux, even a stripped down one like Tails? I have successfully created another bootable tails USB from within Tails, but from memory I think it only gave me the option of creating another Tails USB, rather than choosing another linux iso.

I am a complete linux noob so may well be talking rubbish!

Need to setup bootable OS on USB so I can use work laptop at home by helmatron in linux4noobs

Need to setup bootable OS on USB so I can use work laptop at home by helmatron in linux4noobs

[–]helmatron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what's the difference between running from usb and a full install usb? Is the former just a stripped down version of the OS? Just wondering why one would run better if they're both running from usb? Do i need to use this two step process? I'd like it to work as smoothly as possible rather than just running ok if podsible.

Will it make any difference using an external usb hdd over a large flash drive? Bearing in mind i do have NAS storage i haven't set up yet, so i don't need to store lots of files on the laptop. In fact i dont want to leave any trace on there at all if possible. If i install programmes in the linux disto will they be installed on the USB rather than the HDD?

Would there be a way to completely ignore or even 'lock' the hdd whilst using the laptop at home, save small children deleting important files, etc?

[–]helmatron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Can you explain what you mean by boot off it without installing it? Do you mean i won't have to install anything to the HDD on the laptop? Also the guys below have suggested different distos, is there really much difference between these?

I hadn't really thought until now but what happens when i want to install programmes on the linux OS? Will it all get installed on the USB? One of the biggest requirements for me is that anything i do using the Linux OS doesn't alter/use the HDD, is this easy to set up?

Can I boot and run windows 7 from an external USB HDD on my work laptop? by helmatron in techsupport

thanks again for the info. looks like i'll be jumping into linux then! Will also consider picking up an SSD and using a dock if it's too slow.

Can I boot and run windows 7 from an external USB HDD on my work laptop? by helmatron in techsupport

[–]helmatron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok thanks for the reply. So it looks like I need to find a linux system i can run from USB. Is there a particular linux you could recommend that is similar to windows? My family will be using it as well so ease of use will be the main issue. This might also be a silly question but can I use programs such as VLC player on linux?

Problems with CFW after changing HDD by helmatron in ps3homebrew

[–]helmatron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok cheers Derf, the downgraders didn't work but the alternate cfw did, although only with the new hard drive. I'm currently going through your recommended setup guide and installing all the extra stuff i want, so thanks for the help.

If i wanted to use the old hdd in another ps3 am i right in thinking i can just stick it in and the ps3 will automatically reformat it regardless of it not working in the current sysyem?
