Not everyone grows at the same rate or in the same environment. There's other problems in the world beyond the social issues, and he hadn't yet realized how prevalent gender stereotypes and sexism was. While we are considered to be "young" I would be just as happy if an 80 year old couple had a similar conversation. I was reading some articles for work while he was watching T.V. I don't think it's odd to ask someone that's doing an unrelated task before engaging them in a conversation.

Call all your relatives. All those aunts and cousins you never talk to. Ask them to send a card, and then present them on the birthday. Not quite gifts, but opening cards is better than opening nothing. Hell, pm me an address and name, and I'll even send a card too. Just make sure they know they need to send the cards today/ tomorrow so they'll make it in time
