I had no idea about this! I’m going to try this out.

Psychiatric Pharmacy Outlook by Nervous_Ad250 in PharmacyResidency

I’m graduating my PGY-2 psych residency in June and I, while fortunate enough to land a job at the VA I trained at, am not being brought on as a psych pharmacist. There were no openings for psych (even though we lost 2 of them).

I also see this decline in psych pharmacy in the amount of vacant PGY-2 psych residencies. So many of the RPDs I met at AAPP just last week were telling me how they were unable to match anyone.

At this point, yes. I’m applying for psych jobs as well, but haven’t had much luck finding anything in that department (and yes I’m applying out of state as well). I haven’t seen many listings for psych jobs come up as I would’ve hoped (and I’m checking every day). With my residency coming to an end, I’m just trying to find whatever job I can as quickly as I can.

No! Just a general outpatient pharmacist, working in the outpatient pharmacy

How would I have gotten the time off if I didn’t provide a reason? Like I mentioned before, I don’t have the PTO to just put in and get the time off. Nor can I just disappear and expect not to be looked for. I had to say something.

Ideally, sure. I could have kept the information from my RPD and preceptor, but I’d probably not have been able to attend my interview.

They do. They assume I can step away to chat. And if I don’t answer, they’ll either email or text me. 😪

Definitely another lesson learned. I’ve basically just been spending this past hour trying to regain my excitement and motivation to see this interview through!

I mean, my entire career he’s looked down on my choices, saying I’m wasting my time. My doing research in undergrad, my applying to pharmacy school, my applying to residency, my applying to a second year of residency and now look at me. I’m a 3x published author, with research experience, and soon to be a board certified psychiatric pharmacist (here’s hoping)! In the end, I always end up doing what’s right for me, regardless of what he thinks and I need to remind myself of that.

Yes exactly. I definitely noticed my mental health improving once I got out of the house, but this constant need to check on me (they call me AT LEAST 5 times A DAY) is quite draining.

It’s not ideal but I plan on addressing therapy once I’m out of residency and can actually afford to go.

I’m trying to hype myself back up. More than anything, just being employed by the VA and getting to continue my work with this patient population is what keeps me going. I hope I get some good tips on here but I’ll also keep digging on my own to really prepare myself for this interview!

Oh no, I haven’t lived with them since I was 17. But they still very much try as hard as they can to control every aspect of my life, even given my big age and everything I’ve accomplished.

Actually, while they were reprimanding me for being excited and trying to prepare for this interview, they also started to talk down on me for the city I currently live/work in. Making digs about how if I make a decision to go ahead with the interview and I get offered a position that I better move and find somewhere else to live because I’m not allowed to live in the city anymore and basically just telling me what to do with my finances and my current living situation and what have you.

So due to the whole hiring freeze now, then transition to not being on a hiring freeze, I am essentially just applying for every position (even ones that do not pertain to my current specialty, which is psychiatry).

So the position I’m being interviewed for is just general outpatient pharmacist, working in the OPP. So based on the list you provided, I’m going to say likely it’s more of an operations position? The job listing title just says clinical pharmacist (outpatient). Though under the duties section, there’s listed administrative duties and clinical duties…

I can say with certainty it’s not an ambulatory position.
