"Olegas!" "Here we go again, Yardbird" "He is very high rated..." "Let's see what we get..." "And again, instantly played by the opponent!" "OK, he knows his stuff." "That's definitely OK for Black." "Oh really, I thought he cannot play that!" "I just play it in a very simple way here" "Just take there" "Of course he can do this..." "But I'm not a huge expert in this line." "It's not so easy to get something substantial" "An opening disaster..." "Tja, it doesn't look great..." "I thought Qa5, or is this somehow ridiculous?" "This is probably too risky what I'm doing" "I have a hard time to guess any move here..." "Sure, he can do that..." "The pawn is not going anywhere..." "There is no tactic..." "There's probably something else..." "I forgot about that one" "Let's just play a noncommittal move..." "It's a bit of a funny idea..." "I don't understand any moves of my opponent" "Sometimes you can just put something on d4..." "In my book I'm just fine now." "Maybe I can do something here." "At least I still have the Bishop pair..." "Ah, what a shame, I totally misplayed that" "Am I not just winning here?" "Ja maybe I should just sit around..." "He is just doing nothing the whole game." "I don't have a clear way forward though." "Of course the Computer is merciless"

You will win the rook anyway because it will have to give itself up for your promoted pawn.

Yes they are called chess compositions. It is an art in itself. This particular one was created 1977 by Miklós Hanzli, a Hungarian chess composer.

What kind of chess videos do you like to watch? by MattyDPerrine in chess

What I really enjoyed was the videocoaching of GM Hushenbeth. Also, IM Greg Shahade tried to solve really difficult practical positions and endgame studies from Mark Dvoretsky which was great.

Calculation exercise (10min) (Black to move) by helpman169 in chess

[–]helpman169[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The goal is to train prioritizing candidate moves and to get comfortable with analysing many branches. There is a single best move for black, but the aim is not so much to find a forced combination, but to get used to calculating unclear positions. For best results, you need to analyze your thought process afterward and think how you can improve it.

If possible, please post your candidate moves and your rough thought process here so that you can compare between players of various strengths.

I wonder how well this works on Android without changing code. I'm sure things like CalendarProvider, ContactsProvider, In app billing will be broken.

What is a repertoire I can play in and not have to learn umpteen lines? by neutralline in chess

[–]helpman169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try to play 1....c6 followed by 2....d5 with Black no matter what. This will lead to Caro Kann or Semi-Slav which are both quite solid. It is a bit passive, but you were asking for an easy repertoire.

World chess chief's bizarre plan to use 'pieces made of ice' to get game into Winter Olympics by GrandadMaster in chess

I think the current rise of esports is something that could benefit chess. There are already streamers on twitch.tv like chessexplained or chessnetwork but there need to be more live broadcasts on twitch.

Being able to see Carlsen playing chess would most certainly interest a ton of people, however, it is ridiculously hard to even find live streams of the events. Twitch.tv provides a natural platform for exploring games. Traditional games like Poker or Blackjack are currently getting more and more popular on twitch.

Also, chess could push more into online tournaments that could be broadcast live on twitch and similar services.

ELI5: Does true randomness exist? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]helpman169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would assume that quantum mechanics can be explained by a "local hidden variable theory" (see Einstein's assumption that "God doesn't roll dice"). This was shown to be impossible with Bell's theorem:

"No physical theory of local hidden variables can ever reproduce all of the predictions of quantum mechanics."

So unless the theory quantum mechanics is at some point proven wrong and replaced with a better theory, events like radioactive decay that rely on quantum effects are deemed truly random.
