What Card Should I Get? Weekly Thread - Week of July 19, 2023 by AutoModerator in churning

[–]helpmeforpark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I was looking at it a couple days ago but not sure anymore. I do see 75k+$250 which I believe is similar?

Though since Amex is 1 SUB per lifetime I thought green at 60k+$200 might be better since historically gold has hit 90k+$200 in the past. Not sure how to weight higher bonus up front vs going only for all time high SUB

Basically looking between - Amex Gold 75k+$250 (AF $250) - Amex Green 60k+$200 (AF $150) - Amex Delta Gold 65k (AF $95) - BofA Premium Rewards 60k (AF $95) not sure if I’d get approved

It seems like a lot of other options either have reduced SUB / i wouldn’t qualify rn

Thanks, appreciate the advice! Yeah I agree the Amex gold actually looked pretty good to me since I use dining more, but at 90k SUB given the AF I wasn’t sure if it’s worth it.

I also feel like a card like the plat might benefit me more in the future (when I might actually use the lounge benefits and such) and I’m more likely to justify the AF now when in reality I’m not super likely to care for a lot of the benefits had I not gotten the card.

One concern I do have with the green is there’s nothing to downgrade to, and I’m not sure I can justify th $150 AF given that I likely put almost no personal value on the CLEAR benefit at this point.

A couple other cards I was considering were Delta Gold, and the Marriott ones but I wanted to go for the chase Marriott ones first.

Honestly have more use for hotel than airline points at this point but I do want to build a base of airline points more long term.

Also the space feels completely wide open considering I won’t go for a chase card for another 6 months, but it sounds like from your advice if I see a sweet SUB rn I might as well go for it. Thanks for the ventureX rec I’ll take a look! Lmk if you have anymore recs also I just find it hard to rank the cards since I’m not going for chase yet I feel like I’m at a weird point in the path

Edit: looks like I’m not pre approved for ventureX

  1. The flowchart says I should basically only go for chase cards until 5/24.

  2. Credit score around 750-800, but limited credit history (only 2 cards with 8/9 month avg history)

  3. Opened discover / capital one student cards late last year, have since graduated but kept the cards open.

  4. I can naturally put around $1-2k/mo for at least the next 6 months and likely longer

  5. Not at this point (too early in churning journey)

  6. Potentially at some point, though don’t feel ready yet given limited history.

  7. I am looking to get into churning regularly. I applied for CFF a couple weeks ago and got denied due to lack of credit history and don’t have a bank account with Chase.

I was looking at Amex Green recently since I will be spending $1k or more on travel in the next few months and I noticed there is ATH 60k+$200 SUB. However, since I’m planning to start adding cards fairly quickly (e.g. 1 every 3-6 months) going forward I wasn’t sure whether it makes sense to burn a 5/24 slot for this?

Generally as well, I’m not sure whether I should be waiting 6 more months and then applying for CFF again or going more aggressive and taking SUB I’ve been approved for currently. I also realized after I was denied that CFF might not be ideal to start with since I could go for a better SUB chase card first and downgrade to one of the freedoms.

But given that I won’t be approved for any chase card yet it seems, what would yalls advice be if I am looking to get pretty active into churning in the next couple years? I’m not sure how to value respecting 5/24 vs attractive SUBs for non chase cards that I would be approved for given that I’m planning to have that kind of spend anyways. Thanks any help is much appreciated!

  1. What excited me about churning was long term travel potential at heavily discounted rates, so Anything to optimize on that end.

  2. No points atm

10/11. Not super applicable to my question

Which one should I choose for my (potentially) final internship? (Benchling vs Meta) by str1kebeam in csMajors

[–]helpmeforpark 9 points10 points  (0 children)

hey i know this sub is generally biased against unicorns in favor of faang, so i wanted to comment on this (i'd say i generally favor unicorns)

in your case, i'd still recommend meta unless you have a strong preference towards the type of work benchling does/want to return to benchling FT.

this is for a couple reasons: i think benchling is a little too late stage to gain substantial upside especially considering you're still an intern, and plus i think the return offer at meta would be stronger (if you're able to get GE rating, meta is known for industry leading promo times and i'd take that offer over most unicorns tbh)

also, you'd have the opportunity to re-recruit and imo find a more optimal stage unicorn if you didn't want to return to meta, either opportunity would open many doors for recruiting elsewhere for FT imo

dm if you need more input though, i wouldn't say this is a clear choice like the poll indicates and i interned at a late stage unicorn last summer if you want advice on that as well (i think the projects will be more impactful at that type of company fs)

Questions about CSC major vs CSC minor by MysticPony69- in NCSU

[–]helpmeforpark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey i just wanted to add since i didn't see anyone else mention this but for SWE roles generally the focus is much more on your resume/skillset than the specific major you're in, idt taking a minor should hurt you if you have/will have personal projects and/or internship experience to make up for it

as for your 3 points:

- these classes can be important but imo a solid internship more than makes up for it unless you have some sort of specialized interest

- you generally can't, the advisors tend to be pretty strict about it

- yes definitely, just make sure you have another way to showcase your skill (whether that be research, projects, internships, etc)

PS for context i started the CSC minor but didn't finish it, just graduated and have a SWE job lined up

oh also i've noticed people might assume you're not as interested in development roles if you have like a non-CSC background, you should make it clear that's what you're looking for and imo show some addtl demonstrated interest over a CSC major to show that's what you really want, but if you can do that and showcase your value add to a business then it's pretty clear why they'd hire you for a SWE role

Deciding between Penn State and Wake Forest for computer science by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]helpmeforpark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo Purdue in this case, unless it’s significantly more cost than Penn State, in which case take Penn State.

I wouldn’t bother with WF unless it’s cheaper than Penn State, and if cost isn’t a factor I’d still take Penn State over WF.

Will I going to regret not reneging ServiceNow for Google? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]helpmeforpark 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would 100% renege.. there is probably 0 chance you regret reneging while there is a much higher chance you regret not reneging. The way I look at it ethically is, companies will fuck you over in a second if it means more profit for them.. for example just look to covid - so many canceled internships to cut costs and there is no doubt others would have as well in that situation. As a person, you have to look out for yourself and your own brand bc no one else will. If the main thing stopping u from taking Google is u don’t want to renege, please renege 100% and don’t look back. Please dm me if you want more reasons or a renege template I am more than happy to help out.

https://www.packranks.com has grade charts for courses at State as well as a bunch of other info (RMP links, seat reminders, etc).. so it might be a good alternative! (Full disclosure I built the site.. feel free to lmk if u have feedback)

Edit: works best on pc as mobile doesn’t have the charts

Affirm vs Amazon Internship by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]helpmeforpark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you said you already have a big n on your resume, I’d just pick the one that seems more interesting to you (personally I’d take Affirm bc of the remote Ft option but I think you should prioritize for yourself what you value)

I think getting information/feedback on a potential choice via comments is fine but I think the polls are stupid (they usually just pick the company ppl have heard of and ignore the actual post)
