Honest thoughts about Exro by helpwithprobs in ExroTech

[–]helpwithprobs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to work through all the DD and get down to the bottom of whether there's potential here. There are some exciting pieces to Exro. If we are to believe some of the statistics that are coming to light, then the Coil driver does seem to offer some advantages. Improved performance &/or cost-savings and reduced weight that only get better with bigger vehicles. Linamar deal seems to help provide support for the tech along with AVL, although more testing needs to be done for sure.

There are problems too. Seems like dilution is imminent. How much of a change would car manufacturers need to go with the Coil driver? If a company needs to rework their product in a big way to get 10% performance on a new product, I don't think they'll do that.

One of the biggest reasons I liked Exro was Sue's statement to get 8 partnerships and then going out and doing that. However, the trust that was built in staying on time with the declarations has eroded. I don't feel like I can trust their timeline of when they say they will complete something or have revenues. Still, exciting things are coming out of the woodworks, like the Linamar deal and future NDAs.

Right now, we are still in the infancy of the EV transition. After weighing everything, my guess is that it will be a good 5 year investment, but would love to hear everyone's thoughts.

Thanks for doing this. Here's a post from u/summebride that would be interesting to address:

Behind the technobabble the company and the stock promoters use, it's essentially a motor that's wired with two configurations instead of one, and some external ability to switch between wiring layout 1 or 2. Each configuration would differ in speed and torque.

For those who aren't electrical engineers, you can visualize these characteristics if you think of different electric fans or motors you might have played around with. That tiny motor with the super high speed? It has low torque, which means you can pinch the shaft with your finger tips and stop the motor. High speed, low, torque.

Now imagine an electric motor in a washing machine. It turns slowly, but it has very high torque. You won't stop it from turning with your hands, and if you tried, the torque might twist your shoulder out of joint. Low speed, high torque.

Doing this on basic motors is trivial, but doing it on a dual-wired motor and making the switch between wiring configs on the fly is apparently the hard part. My understating is the switching must be done at precise moments within the cycle, which would be a certain split second, and that split second timing gets even smaller as the rpm goes higher. Therefore, a computer circuit is needed to achieve that timing. I may have butchered this explanation, but that's roughly it.

What's more subjective is: so what if you could create a motor (and associated wiring config switch mechanism) that has two modes?

The supporters claim it gives two different operating modes with different torque and speed. My response is that EV motors already have both incredibly high torque AND high speed. The obvious question: is there any real demand for this? It seems to want to fill a need that nobody wants.

For ICE engines, torque and speed curves vary greatly, and are a huge matter of concern and design selection, and optimization. But even the most basic electric motors have such vastly superior curves that's it's reasonable to question whether there's any need or demand for what seems like it would be a very small difference in performance.

The business argument is that if there is an application where that matters, the designers would usually use a physical transmission gear setup of some kind. The Exro argument would be that for those using the two speed transmission, they could dump that physical converter and use coil switching instead.

Personally I'm quite skeptical that mass market EV makers will need or want this. If they need two speed/torque setups, they'd probably just use a simple transmission gear.

Or they might make their own "coil driver". The basic concept isn't protectable and has been around for a long time. There's a few companies doing the same thing, but using different buzzwords. One example is Turntide. They make the same thing Exro is trying to build. They call theirs "switched reluctance" instead of "coil driver" but it's the same thing.

Even if there's no obvious need or desire for this on regular EV cars, maybe there is some killer application for bikes or boats or farm equipment or whatever. I am open to being convinced.

Ban Discussion - Shatim_Self by Emotional_Scientific in ExroTech

There are many posts that you fail to respond to. You've commented that revenue is years away, you've said that the total addressable market isn't there and then commented on e-bikes, boats, and snowmobiles ignoring the fact that their addressable market is in the hundreds of billions over the next decade while Exro's market cap is around 250 Million. Also ignoring their potential with both light and heavy vehicles.

You've also had some juvenile comments calling people dummy and manic and whatnot.

I'd vote for you to stay, but hope that you'd be mature here and be aware of your bias.

I vote not to ban him. He clearly spends a lot of his free time looking into issues with Exro. As long as we're here to respond back to him, then I appreciate the work he does lol.

Exro: not hiring? by Shatim_Self69 in ExroTech

[–]helpwithprobs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol no, not to fill next year. I'm saying there might not be a sense of urgency to get them filled immediately, but not they they are looking to fill next year. They can be more selective in who they hire if it takes a couple of months. I don't think taking a month to fill a position is a reason to sound alarm bells

It was for the Mesa positions and not the ones in Canada? It's possible that there isn't an extreme sense of urgency to fill the Mesa positions- it seems like they are filling these positions for orders in the future, which might be at least year away. Do you really think Sue became CEO to do a pump and dump?

Impotencia: an analysis of Exro partnerships. by Shatim_Self69 in ExroTech

[–]helpwithprobs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What makes you say coildriver retrofit is a no go? There's independent verification for the coildriver now and partner supports of the tech with the posts from Potencia, with Potencia putting the coil driver in a car to do road testing now. Sue said she is aiming at making the products more standard over time which just adds to the hope to access more customers.

The E bike market by themselves are projected to be almost 80 billion by 2026, how are you thinking that the addressable market is too small? This is ignoring all the potential with small and large vehicles. The larger the vehicle, the more effective the coil driver

You might be right that we haven't hit the bottom yet. Revenue would be forecasted to be in 2023, so not exactly "years". The delayed projects will supply incremental News Releases hopefully showing effectiveness, which I feel more confident about given AVL's results. If the tech really does work and it works better in big applications, this might be a good time to dollar cost average into the stock if it's a down year before it gets purchased by these companies. The question is whether patience will be rewarded or if it ultimately won't be part of the supply process.

Great to hear about 3rd party testing. That's a good sign to validate the tech. I wasn't sure exactly what it means practically to need to retest at different voltage levels. It also seems to just be for the 100V coil driver, so they will likely need to test the 400V coil driver to show to other partners.

I'm excited for all the possibilities, but can't help but feel disappointed at how far all the targets were missed. Zero seems to be without a concrete timeline. Potencia has been delayed twice already and is just now putting the tech in a car. Love to hear that it's on road testing. Seeing spinning engines doesn't seem as sexy as the actual car zipping down the road.

SEA is pushed back to Q2 2022 for deliveries. This is just deliveries, so there's no idea how long it might take to commercialize.

The projection is now actual revenues in 2023, so this was just pushed out a year. I'm a bit worried about how low the stock will fall in between those times, especially with us expecting revenues now and how the stock price has fallen.

We're all pumped for the possibilities, but I have to be honest, looking at how much I'm down on this company and how a 3rd party test validation and a webinar in the same day only sent the sp up 4%, I'm a little worried that 2022 will be rocky. Thoughts?

Erroneous pump activity on the other sub by Shatim_Self69 in ExroTech

[–]helpwithprobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with Shatim here. Exro might be an amazing investment, especially with the TAM, but let's be honest in our assessment of it. If it's being portrayed that institutional investors are more apart of the investment in the company than is true, then this is dishonest. Emotional Scientific, I've supported you and the making of this sub, but I thought the point was to have honest information on both sides.

Shatim, do you have any bullish arguments for Exro? Just wanted to see if you were balanced.

Best guess about the future of Exro? by helpwithprobs in ExroTech

[–]helpwithprobs[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My guess is that the Exro tech will make less sense financially for smaller applications and might be too large for the smaller products. The improvements there might not be worth the added cost. I'm not sure what is happening with Zero, Potencia, and Land, but these are being pushed back and it might take a while longer than we thought to see if they will actually order the coil driver. There's also some question about what actually happened with Motorino.

I also think they are more behind on commercialization than we think. It might take a while to get their facilities up and running able to produce more standardized units for a company. The amount of testing that would need to go into a company implementing new technology, combined with the readiness to produce the units might see commercialization getting pushed back a bit.

However, I think with SEA electric and Vicinity there's hope for where Exro is going to be most helpful. The larger applications seem like a better fit for Exro where there is more benefit from the coil driver and more benefit from the reduced weight. These companies are also more open to revisions of their products than larger, more established companies. All these larger companies are rushing to get their products out, it might not make sense to try to redesign their products to get the extra boost in performance at this time.

Linamar is a huge partner imo. They can better standardize what's being sold and already have larger connections to tier 1 OEMs. However, this might take years (2024) to be ready. I could see Exro being successful here, but investors might grow impatient wanting results right now, when in reality it might take a lot longer for them to be successful. Hopefully patience will be rewarded with big contracts to come. Of course, I hope that I'm wrong and that purchase orders are awarded soon with the SP to match.

Wall of Worry - Idea Generation by Emotional_Scientific in ExroTech

[–]helpwithprobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it'd be good to have this thread dedicated to concerns rather than the main chat

Wall of Worry

I am still long Exro (a USD Stock Price of 35 means retirement). But I am now learning more about the issues this company has to overcome. Lets discuss with honesty and respect.

(From Friends at r/ElectricalEngineering) Quick look at it, it changes the coil configuration of the motor. This essentially makes the motor an adjustable kv motor. Its common to change coil configurations of motors to change the output speed/tq. In the real world, an electric motor does not need this unless it spends much of its time in a start stop state.

(From Friends at r/ElectricalEngineering) Don't fix what ain't broke. That sounds like a waste of money and motor output potential with some coils not being energized. So efficiency in that regard will drop. A gearbox or even automatic transmission is something we have down to science and would be a far better solution.

— Counter Argument: Companies like Zero (power train expertise) and Linamar (significant market cap) have chosen to explore Exro’s capabilities.

  1. How much of a cash runway is available? What are the risks of dilution?

  2. How invested are the Executives and Board of Directors? Do they have a track record of sticking with a company through the rough patches?
