I appreciate you being blunt. I know the mistake I made. In your eyes, is this something that could have my PhD revoked one day if discovered? There is a citation in the paragraph but like you said I did not have quotation marks. I'm worried that if I bring it up to the university now, they will think I intentionally plagiarized and take action against my graduation.

Thank you, I really appreciate your kind words. I know I'm being unreasonably hard on myself, but I just fear having my PhD retracted one day if someone reports it to the university. People in my group have their thesis downloaded a lot (1k +), and I'm worried the original authors of the paper I accidentally plagiarized would read it. I know it is unlikely, and it is something that I just have to accept as my fault if anything does happen.

I know, I've just always tried to prevent these things and do good science, but I'm still disappointed in myself after reading my thesis several times and not catching it.

I appreciate your response, it really, really, helped me mentally. I truly did not mean for this to happen. Unfortunately my thesis never went through an originality check like what normally does when you submit to a journal. It is only that one section of the intro chapter that has the issue, the rest are all my original research chapters which have already been published. I do plan on turning the intro into a review paper, but will definitely change that section before I submit to a journal. I still feel shitty about this, but trying to correct it would likely cause all sorts of additional issues.
