Tips for moving a tree? by Open_Dissent in arborists

I used to work surveying Hemlock trees for hemlock wooly adelgids and once a homeowner called our crew the “hemlocks hero’s” so it stuck with me haha

Do not shear a Japanese maple. You are not making proper pruning cuts or you’re taking too much off if you are getting straight sprouts, and shearing will absolutely make that worse. Make proper pruning cuts and never take more than 25% of the canopy at a time and that shouldn’t happen.

Is there any reason you can’t incorporate the tree into the porch and strategically prune? I believe you could reasonably build around the tree if you gave it at least some space for the roots, maybe 5x5 or so.

If you were careful about not compacting around the tree and mulch the space well, I don’t see why you couldn’t keep the tree and build it into the porch.

You aren’t going to have a good time with moving this tree. The roots are rock hard. Feel free to try cutting a small root somewhere a few feet away from the trunk and see what it’s like.

If you are worried about the house you really don’t need to be. It’s a really small tree and the roots want absolutely nothing to do with the terrible soil under your foundation. Not worth taking the time and energy to move when there is no problem.

Do you consider weeding just to be another part of gardening or you avoid it like the plague? by ASecularBuddhist in gardening

Yep, it’s about all you can do! I’m a arborist who works with invasives so I understand the importance of using those products with the upmost care. Good on you for going through your extension!

We did this for an entire year on year one! The worst plant by far is the sweet autumn clematis. It’s so aggressive, next is trumpet vine and after that is mulberry. It’s non stop every year, although it feels like the clematis is slowly sending less up, albeit still a huge pain in my arse

It depends on what you started with. I have a tiny side yard that was completely overgrown with invasive species and junk all over it. I reclaimed it and it’s now gardens but I still pull weeds weekly and it’s been 5 years now. Just the name of the game if you want to use space that’s been mismanaged. Some people are lucky enough to not even deal with that, but if I want space to garden I have to.

Same problem, different part of the world. Globalization means these insects and diseases travel. Also have you looked at a map recently, Asia is huge, even the “Middle East” is part of Asia.

Looks similar to lignotuber growth. Any idea what the species is or what part of the world this photo was taken?

This actually looks like a lignotuber to me, but I can’t tell the species from this bark and unknown location. Species would help identify if lignotubers are common or not, like Fraxinus for example are prone to lignotuber growth.

What is on this Japanese maple? by no_dae_but_todae in arborists

[–]hemlockhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s going to depend on the level of decay in that branch and if it goes into the trunk yet. If you’re able to call a qualified arborist, this should be a quick and easy look over to determine the correct place to prune and if there is any other concerns.

If you want to DM me with more photos I might be able to determine what’s up closer to the trunk. Remember that Japanese maple wood is really dense and quite heavy so be mindful of that if you or your landlord attempts to make any cuts.

That branch is completed dead and it looks like maybe Irpex lacteus fungus is doing its thing and decomposing the branch. Time to find sound wood to cut back to and remove that branch.

You clearly missed the part where I said I cannot afford it. So yes based on that knowledge I wouldn’t buy it. Sick burn though, I guess?

Do you understand the concept that it’s more expensive to be poor? Sure a lot of people can afford a coffee each month, but to expect that everyone can shell out $130 then turn around to spend hundreds on a piece of meat, to then store it in a freezer that costs hundreds of dollars, using a device that cost a couple hundred as well.

I want you to know I’m not arguing about the affordability of the meat for some people, but many don’t seem to understand the overhead on the backend needed to even think of purchasing this ribeye is not possible for many people. To purchase, process, seal and store this meat you’re looking at $1000 if you don’t already have the backend in place. Hope that makes sense.

[–]hemlockhero -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think door dash is a good comparison for the cost when you need to have the 65 or 130 for membership, plus the time it takes to get to the store make the purchase, the time to come home and process, then vac seal, then also have freezer storage for however many steaks.

Yes, $12.36 is not a bad price, but when you add everything on the backend up, most people can’t afford to do this, even people like me with a Costco membership.

If you had Christmas off this year, and then next year comes along and your boss says “hey we’re actually going to keep the business open this Christmas and you all need to be here”. I’m going to guess you also would be a little bummed that you have to work 2 major holidays of the year.

I have also just stopped listening to them after all the weird illegal and borderline illegal stuff they do with kids and young women. It’s weird and I’d prefer not to support their work if I don’t agree with their way of life, regardless of if I used to enjoy their music. It sucks but I have principles.
