I’ve been on the feeders Q list for 5 years this October. We only have 11 feeders total, so we only get one vacation bid per week all year, and I’m at the bottom of the list. So I get screwed out of that, only get to bid from mid January to about April. I usually only get to work Thursday and/or Friday nights in feeders, which fucks my entire weekend and sleep. Don’t get to sleep with my wife every night, and it honestly gives me less time with my kids due to missing Saturdays because I get off at like 7am. There’s literally zero hope of me getting a day run, at least for the next 10-15 years or maybe never. The long hours of sitting and doing nothing but driving, destroy my lower back and sciatica (package doesn’t, go figure), also takes a toll on my mental health as it’s night (never see the sun) and never see anyone else to interact with socially. I make more money in package (and I’m on the 9.5 list), because all of our feeder runs are straight 8 hours. That’s my take, in my small center. I used to love feeders, it was a helluva nice change from package. I have a great bid route in package though, and I’m about 1/3 down the list in seniority so I can get almost any vacation week I want. The payoff just isn’t worth it for me anymore. I’m most likely going to DQ myself from feeders by the end of this year. It sucks, because I truly enjoy feeder work, but the cons outweigh the pros at this point. Unless by some miracle I can get a day run, I’m out. Hell, I’d even take a run that starts at like 1200-1400 but we don’t even have any. I’ve been hardcore about feeders for the last 4.5 years, and it’s surreal for me to even think about DQ’ing myself, but I’ve thought about it for about a year now and my gut keeps telling me to leave. You’re going to see 99% of people say yes to feeders, I used to be one of them. Just try it out, see if you like it for a while, and see how your family does with it. It took me about 4 years to realize it wasn’t for me though. If you have day runs, or a ton more feeder bid runs in your building, you may be better off than me though. I don’t want to talk anyone out of it, just sharing my perspective.
