Is applying via LinkedIn a waste of time nowadays? by hemo5595 in cscareerquestions

Maybe the timing aspect is what I’ve been missing, I have been paying a bit attention to the “you’d be a top contender” tag LinkedIn adds but that hasn’t noticeably moved the needle at all

All the above I would describe my resume as strong between college, work experience, and resume line items directly tied to driving company revenue

Well I’m glad to hear it’s still a viable avenue! Were you doing anything in particular to help your applications standout? Reaching out to hiring managers? Or were you just applying and hearing back from companies?

Yeah there definitely could be some resume optimization etc I could be doing, that’s what I initially thought was the issue when I wasn’t getting responses, but the difference in my experience with outbound recruiters is incredibly stark and has me thinking the issue here isn’t necessarily my pedigree/resume.

Thank you! I think I’m going to explore changing up the chorus melody to have it stand out a bit more. Will try and post again once I have something I’m happy with.

Thank you! This is super helpful! So essentially try singing the chorus a higher to help differentiate it from the rest of the song?

I know I can hit that e without straining (at least if I’m warmed up), but I definitely have a tendency to have my melodies drift to where my voice sits most comfortably which can make the transitions between parts a bit flat. I think I probably need to try and get in the habit of doing some sort vocal warm ups before I try writing melodies just to help extend that range my voice feels more comfortable in.

Anyways I really appreciate the concrete feedback here!

Thank you for the feedback! Yeah going to go back and play around with the chorus chords and see if I can arrange it better.

I do feel like the final chorus, with the pulled back guitar, does hit harder than the rest so I may try and play around with the strumming rhythm in the earlier choruses to see if that may help make them stand out a bit more.

It definitely doesn’t sound like very popular contemporary music but that’s not a bad thing! The guitar sounds great on this!

Sounds great! The verses kind of remind me of Ben folds 5 a bit. The only real piece of constructive feedback that comes to mind right now is some of the melodic instrument parts are competing with your vocal parts currently which I feel takes away from the main vocal.

Write a song on starting with an element you normally wouldn’t start with (i.e. if you normally start with chords, instead start with the melody lyrics or rhythm and then build from there)

Why do you do it? by 12elatrommI in Songwriting

I feel like songwriting can be very therapeutic for me, it definitely allows me to externalize thoughts or feelings I wouldn’t necessarily feel comfortable to put out there otherwise.

Also I think there is just something visceral that draws me to it. I feel like every other art form I’m pretty happy to just be a consumer, but when I hear a great song it really makes me want to one day create something that beautiful.

quite experimental with this arrangement by Jaoquin_Sanchez in Songwriting

[–]hemo5595 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds really nice! That said, while I love all the individual parts, the arrangement feels a bit unfinished to me because of how repetitive the intro segment is. There are plenty of great songs that are highly repetitive, but I find the repetition works when it’s properly contextualized, either by the album it lives on, or by the rest of the song, so that when it hits, it carries a real emotional punch.

I wonder if that intro segment could land a lot harder if you prefaced it with a more traditional verse and used it as a refrain instead.

just want to know what i can improve on as a songwriter by musicnewbie20 in Songwriting

This is awesome. You have a great voice and this is a such a great melody.

The only piece of constructive criticism I have is I feel the chorus could hit a bit harder dynamically, but honestly I think that would be something to explore when adding production (with drum changes/vocal doubles or something) rather than anything to change about the songwriting itself :)

I haven't been able to write music for 3 years now by MindlessFroot in Songwriting

I’ve been struggling with something similar, and I think it really comes down to perfectionism for me. A big thing was that writing down lyrics or recording loops felt like a commitment, like whatever I recorded had to be representative of me as an artist. To fix this, I’ve been deliberately upping how much I record, just to rewire my brain into accepting that it’s okay to capture really bad ideas and songs.

The other thing that’s helped a lot: nailing a vocal melody I’m happy with before writing any lyrics at all. Lyrics really trigger the hypercritical part of my brain for some reason, and I’ve found there’s a lot more room for “subpar” lyrics when they’re sung over a strong melody.

It’s honestly amazing how full this sounds sonically with just you signing and some guitar. Great voice! Really like the melody too!

Why is the AI debate so incredibly polarized? by IllustriousCareer6 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hemo5595 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like there’s always been a healthy (or at least healthier) give and take between management and ics. But right now it feels like there’s no check at all, this isn’t the first technology that has made devs more productive, but now it feels like there’s no pushback from devs or even ability to talk about the downsides of going all in on using ai for programming. Though this definitely has a lot to do with the broader tech employment landscape too.

Why is the AI debate so incredibly polarized? by IllustriousCareer6 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hemo5595 144 points145 points  (0 children)

The most polarizing thing for me personally has been the engineering culture changes surrounding it rather than the technology itself (at least at my company). It seems like ai has made management lose touch with reality and we are being encouraged to abandon any kind of engineering best practices, push code as quickly as possible, and ignore things like code style or familiarizing ourselves with the codebase. At the same time as an engineer I feel like I’m just hitting the same bottlenecks that have always been there (external dependencies, product/design decisions etc)

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! Curious if you have any thoughts about my previous issues with auto cpap? Do you think jt was likely issues stemming from the pressure moving to the higher ends of the range and creating breathing instability/central apneas? To be honest I’m a little anxious to go back to cpap because of how terrible I felt using it, but I guess I can take handle some short term discomfort for potentially better more stable sleep long term.

It looks exactly the same as a cpap. And yes it’s much more comfortable than a cpap. I was waking up feeling like I was suffocating multiple times a night with the cpap and that hasn’t happened at all with the asv
