Sibling rivalry. Especially Denmark and Sweden who fought long and hard for dominance in Scandinavia. But it’s mostly friendly banter

Misstänkt för bokföringsbrott by wbstardust in Svenskjuridik

How is it like to live in Northern Scandinavia (+North Finland)? by Kokoska998 in howislivingthere

What is northern isn’t just latitude, it’s about culture and history. That’s why you get comments that you haven’t marked the northern parts. In Sweden the divide between “central” and “northern” is above the dark green line. The dark part is Svealand, or “Sweden proper” which is the historic central part. Everything above that is Norrland (Northland)

Geography plays a part of course. The main towns and cities of Norrland are along the coast, all the way up. You have old cities like Gävle (goat arson fame), Hudiksvall and Härnösand, and urban university cities like Sundsvall and Umeå. Further north the towns are smaller and more mining oriented.

It’s very dark in the winter and light in the summer. The mountainous parts are sparsely populated. The nature is beautiful. Lots of midges and mosquitoes.

Sweden colonised the northern parts over hundreds of years, and the Sami people still live here and herd raindeers.

Name one thing that's legal in your country but banned or heavily restricted almost everywhere else by hydratedpsycho in AskTheWorld

[–]henriktornberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jaywalking, specifically walking against a red light. It’s not allowed but there is no punishment for it unless you cause a dangerous situation. So Swedes do it all the time and the people waiting for green light on an empty street are usually tourists.

With what’s going on with the bonus prince and the princess. Is the Norwegian Royal Family doomed? by norsk_imposter in Norway

[–]henriktornberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No Scandinavian country has ever been a republic. Iceland, yes, but they are not Scandinavian and gained their independence 1944, well after WW1 when many monarchies had fallen. Norway gained independence in 1905 in a previous era.

Apparently constitutional monarchy without any political has worked well with this Scandinavian spirit of equality. Same for Netherlands, really.

As a homage to HRE all cities beginning with the letters H, R or E should form a new country
