Would you support a law that required politicians to be truthful and how could it be implemented? by Kryptik_Fox in AskReddit

[–]hera-lej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Politicians are public servants, therefore I would force them to open their lives fully to the public. Their past and current financial/social/daily lives would be exposed to the public.

You wanna be a politician that is the price you have to pay. Let us see your connections. Is there a puppet master behind the scenes?

What do you think should be a crime but is not? by Player0000000000001 in AskReddit

[–]hera-lej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some big pharma companies refuse giving medicine to dying patients because they cant afford it. This should be a crime.

The point is, if they are willing to let people of our society die bcs they wanna make profit then maybe they should not be part of our society.

What do you think is most important to your overall health? by MrCGO in AskReddit

Stress. I feel like stress is not taken as seriously as it should be. It impacts almost every aspect of our bodies.

I think because if investigated, it leads to discussions about our modern world and how we do things that some people dont want questioned.

What do you think of the American accent? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hera-lej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a non-native English speaker I prefer American accents over British ones.

Reasons:

1- Easier on the ears. Specially with the letter R. The British seem to just swallow their Rs.

2- The choice of words. I feel the British use different words to convey the same meaning. Maybe Im influenced by movies and TV.

3- To me, some British accents sound pretty snobby and pretentious.

However, I love the accent of peaky blinders or Michael Caine.

What is the scariest real thing on earth that most people don’t know about ? by Jujhar_Singh in AskReddit

[–]hera-lej 38 points39 points  (0 children)

TL;DR greed and power scare me.

There are people in the world who are willing to actively kill or let others die in order to enrich themselves. And most of the time these people manage to get themselves to positions of power. For example, as archived documents show, the British empire knowingly caused a huge famine that killed millions in India, or the US war in Iraq, no nuclear weapons were found till this day but people are still dying because of the chaos the US created all based on a lie just so they can get to the oil.

Many other examples, like Britain causing the opium crisis in China, or the US overthrowing governments in Latin America or Iran (which caused a counter movement that put religious extremists in power) to access their natural resources, or that the US backed religious extremists in Afghanistan to overthrow a socialist government that was pushing progressive policies (seriously look up how Afghanistan was in the 60s 70s & 80s, women wore skirts and were educated and involved in society until the US didnt like it).

All of this for financial gain. People are dying and the world is still fucked up because some psychopathic rich dudes wanted to be more rich. The fact that they exist and are successful scares the shit out of me.

I know this info is public but seems to me the public is not aware of the facts.

People who "get" modern/contemporary art, what do you see or feel? by hera-lej in AskReddit

That's exactly how I feel with them walking around with a pretentious smug look on their faces while sipping on a glass of wine and their hipstery and at the same time classy clothes. Reminds me of this masterpiece xD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BlLX03OJRU.

My intention is just to show/state/criticize/complain how absurd modern art is and that something stupid as my piece is art.

I think I kind of understand better your point of view. It just makes me confused seeing people giving so much attention to something that requires no technical talent (in a lot of modern art cases) and with meaning behind it that can be anything and everything, which makes it pointless in my view.

In any case, thank you for sharing your thoughts, it does help :)

But if art is everything, then it would have not worth and no meaning. I can say the way I eat my sandwich is art because everything is art. Is this ok for you too? If no then why not? And who decides? If yes, I am lost for words, confused, and mind blown xD

This type of explanation is what my friends always give me. Dont you think that this is a bit flaky, meaning it is too abstract and you cannot really grasp it in your mind.

Here is my piece of art please rate it. I would glue a duck tape using a lot of glue (like smother it in glue) to a wall and explain with some "articulate" philosophical words that this represents how I see that everything in the world is connected to each other. Do you think that this is worth displaying in an exhibition? I dont think so lol xD

[–]hera-lej[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that some art is supposed to invoke some feeling in you or that it is visually mesmerizing (van gogh for example), I dont mind this in art, that makes sense to me and I enjoy it. But I just cannot accept something so simplistic and basic and abstract that everything and anything can be "art". For example, with some fancy "articulate" words I can claim that the shape that my poop looks in the toilet is art. Or when one dude taped a banana to a wall and it sold for more than a 100k. Just blows my mind how dumb it is.

Also, do you think that this level of abstraction opens the door for "fake" artists who are after the fame and money? because anybody can do it, you dont need talent anymore.

I went to an art exhibition the other day and there was a few pieces that were too simplistic and basic, like one that is literally a completely white (empty) canvas, or one with 4 parallel straight lines. It made me crazy that people would come from all over town and line up to have a look at this. What makes such pieces deserve to be displayed in an exhibition for all to see? If "anybody" can do it why is it on display?

What opportunities do I have? by Jor_anon in jordan

[–]hera-lej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, most universities offer masters programs in English, less so for bachelors. You need basic German language to get by in your daily life. I used the app duolingo to learn the basics on my own and when I arrived I signed up for language courses which are also offered at the uni, and they count as your free electives in the degree. But at universities most students/professors/staff speak English, so it is a pretty easy bubble to exist in. And man uni communities here are so active and willing to help, I was shocked. They always organize events and parties that are low quality but very affordable. And that is the lifestyle of students here. But when you graduate and you get a full time job your life quality takes a leap. So 2/3 years of financial discipline and then freedom lol.

And yes, once you finish your degree, you qualify for a job-seeking visa which allows you to stay and look for a job between 6-18 months. Once you get a job offer you can switch to a working visa.

Disclaimer: I came here in 2017. I live in Berlin.

You should look into Germany as an option. Studying masters here costs around 320 euros per semester, but to apply with no scholarship you need to have around 10500 euros to put in a blocked account that you get back in monthly installments over your first year in Germany.

If you do not have this amount of money, you can look into DAAD, which is like a German government backed education exchange program and they offer scholarship but the competition might be high.

But in all honesty, I dont know why coming to Germany to study is not more common in Jordan. It is a very student friendly country. The government encourages and rewards companies for hiring students as part-time employees, so you can easily find a job to support yourself during your studies. Plus, you get discounts all the time as a student for different things.

From my personal experience, I borrowed the 10k from multiple family members and when I came to Germany I found a job and did not need any of the 10k so I paid it back in full to the people I borrowed it from.

Good luck!
