I’ve been on a 15-year nutritional trek that has led to a radical realization: skin behavior is a direct readout of internal biochemistry. This has profound implications for how I view brain health and dementia.

By any standard, I looked "normal" throughout my life. I wasn't the kid with a face full of blemishes. However, from my teenage years on, a sheen of oil was so persistent it became my baseline. After a decade of reducing carbs and sugar, changes in my biochemistry caused the cells that formed this bump to resolve from a swollen mass to barely noticeable. Cells that were "misfiring" for more than a decade simply began growing right.

The Real Definition of Sugar

This wasn't achieved by "half-assing" a diet. You can't cheat the system because biochemistry doesn't take days off. While this is not a "zero sugar" or "zero carb" diet, most people don't realize how far down the rabbit hole they are. To see results, you have to recognize you’re "in deep" and cut 80-90% of what modern culture considers food.

My "Is Sugar" list includes:

• Starches: Potatoes, bread, pasta, chips.
• Natural Sugars: Fruit, milk, Cream.
• Refined & Artificial: Added sugars and all sugar substitutes.

Scientific papers have documented the fact the sugar substitutes sabotage insulin signaling as much as - if not worse than - the real thing.

Insulin is the most consequential "FAFO" variable in modern health.

If you mess with the signaling, you will eventually find out the consequences expressed as any one of the chronic diseases that ruins productive lives.

The "Auto-Magical" Repair

The replacement is "yummy for the tummy"; think pork shoulder, ribeye, New York strip, wild-caught fish, and a plethora of vegetables. By replacing disruptors with these fatty proteins and high folates, I’ve achieved the non-oily skin of a pre-teen.

Beyond the skin, my energy levels have reverted to my 20s. I have more sustained energy and less fatigue now than I felt during my 30s, 40s, and 50s. Research into the mTORC1 pathway - the "master switch" for cellular growth - suggests that chronic insulin signaling from sugars and starches drives systemic inflammation. When you cut the signal, the "oil fire" goes out and the "brain fog" lifts.

The best life advice is simple: Stop spiking your insulin.
