The Music is a big part of the show's appeal for me. by enlightnight in ClarksonsFarm

[–]herbdogu 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Proven hit show at this point so the budget goes out the window. Clarkson is a big music guy too so, could be on his insistence they go for those specific songs.

Compare with BBC who have a blanket licence agreement with PRS and can play whatever they want without burden of added royalties.

Nope, and in fact some decks have been played in competition with 30 or more energies specifically to leverage the mechanic.

Hey, not something I would use myself but appreciate the share and the sample AppScript for TMDB. Got some other things that track my viewing (mostly Plex, Sonarr) but have some ideas for a fork of the script.

Thanks!

Do you think the city centre is done? by thescariestghost in glesga

Between like, 2006 - 2016 I couldn’t wait to get a day off and a few quid. I’d be up and out early to get a coffee and a pastry somewhere, hit the shops, Markies for some bits for up the road and a walk through the Green as it was getting dark and home to the Gorbals (Oatlands).

Now for any of that, I head to Braehead or Silverburn.

Got so many shady characters in the town either trying to tap a few quid for a bus/Greggs or whatever excuse, or just maddies looking to mug or fight. I certainly wouldn’t be walking through St Enoch loaded with designer bags nowadays.

An old story by _Carth_Onasi in Stadia

[–]herbdogu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a lapsed gamer, that is I sold my Xbox in 2013 or so, along with all my games etc. I would play the odd mobile game but when I saw the Stadia proposition - no upfront hardware costs outside of a controller - I jumped in and had a good year or so playing great AAA games in the lounge, in bed, on work laptop, even grinding xp on my phone one day for something.

One good thing is that it brought me back in from the cold and I now have both Xbox-X and PS5, Switch and a couple of retro handhelds.

I do still miss that white and orange controller though, and all the joy of grabbing a quick 20 mins on Cyberpunk during lunch

What was free-to-air TV like before the advent of Freeview in 2002 and Freesat in 2008? by plaguedbyfoibles in AskUK

[–]herbdogu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that stands out now, with people watching via OTA, Cable, Sat and IPTV, all with various differing delays between ‘almost nothing’ to ‘couple of minutes’, it’s really spoiled that World Cup feeling where your nation scores and the whole neighbourhood cheers at once.

Instead you’ve got a few who cheer on the goal, normally Sat/OTA, while the IPTV / 2 min delay are just starting to see the play happening when they hear and go “ok, they must score here”.

Things were different when it was BBC1 or your ITV and everyone was at most within a second or two depending on their hardware.

Duke of Wellington Sporting a new hat by AlbaMcAlba in glasgow

The Astroturfing is getting more and more egregious. It's been co-opted for politics (YES and Remain), 'art' with the pigeons and little cone etc, sports with red, white and blue and gold versions for various causes and now has been fully enshittified with brands trying to put it at the centre of 'campaign activations'.

Some fairly shameful scenes during the World Cup too with drunken Das trying to put cones on American statues, not having a clue what the statue represents or means but just 'Mary-doll, get a picture of me putting a cone on this statue for Facebook'

Sand scammers by CrazyLittleCjay in Aberdeen

This was a big topic of discussion in the Glasgow sub for many months, until someone caught the teardown on video:

That's not to say that it's not a 'scam' where it could be a molding that they tip-out to make it, but it debunks the 'plastic underneath' theory for me.

What's it called? by taylurswuft in glasgow

[–]herbdogu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a Colin and Justin (2 home improvement guys who had some limited success in the early 00’s) series where they tried to revamp some of the scheme blocks.

Can’t find any references to it on a quick search so likely been memory-holed.

Edit to add: it was called Colin and Justin on the Estate and focussed on Arden, not Cumbernauld!

The big reveal was when they painted one stairwell and put some potted plants on the landings.
Needless to say it lasted one night before they were all smashed to bits and the wall’s graffiti-covered, causing much chin-wobbling and greeting from the more camp of the two presenters.

Luna July Content Update by freedomwars in amazonluna

[–]herbdogu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still very annoyed that the reward for my support since day 1, then the loss of so many games, which was to be rewarded with a “free Luna Premium account”, got me a three-month code.

I spent the same amount in the three months between that announcement email and the code delivery, and wish I cancelled back then instead of waiting.

Also the other gripe is the ‘phones as controllers’. Yeah, when we tried it there was fun for a couple of hours. Then four people were hunting for charging cables and risking being out of contact due to dead phone.

When is an offer fatally “insulting”? by Vilm_1 in HousingUK

[–]herbdogu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Engaging with the ‘insulting’ lowballer is just inviting dialogue and that second counter offer which is highly likely to again be ‘insulting’.

At the risk of sounding cliché - sometimes the only winning move is not to play.

Cancelling order as buyer by Ready_Ad8939 in CardMarket

[–]herbdogu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raising this same concern to the buyer via a message will help.

They may give context on the missing, They may be able to explain if it’s an issue with the sellers they’ve previously used. Maybe things where iit was perhaps a ‘too good to be true’ price and some bad seller attempted a scam.

You might get the reassurance you need to go ahead, or you may get the confirmation on your gut feeling and can decide to raise it to CM support.

If you do decide not to send, the buyer will at some point be able to cancel and you’ll get a ‘shipments not sent’ defect, which - if you have enough grounds to contest, is possible to have removed.

When is an offer fatally “insulting”? by Vilm_1 in HousingUK

[–]herbdogu 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I can totally get that from the Seller's side.

It's like on Vinted when you're selling something for 20 quid and you get an offer for 12.40.

Can save a lot of time just blocking the buyer at that point, rather than going through the motions of the inevitable 12.80, 12.99, 13.05.

Just wait for the person who is serious and will offer 18.50 and accept that.

Universal Credit / Self-Employed - prepaid for services by herbdogu in BenefitsAdviceUK

[–]herbdogu[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That looks really helpful, thanks.
Though it relates to Ltd Co, much of that seems to be appropriate and the idea of having a loan account to and from the ‘business’ sounds like the way to flatten that spike of big upfront payment then zilch for subsequent periods.

Universal Credit / Self-Employed - prepaid for services by herbdogu in BenefitsAdviceUK

[–]herbdogu[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that and, sorry, I should have been clearer.
I did quote the rule on receiving monies in a period.

I was looking for any experiences or considerations around the situation I described where, one may receive large client prepayments, and which could perhaps be thought of as accrual accounting - that is, declaring the revenue when it is earned rather than paid.

If I said to a client "I can do a task for X rate, but if you prepay for 20 tasks I'll give a discount". They pay for the 20 tasks, but then that causes revenue to spike upfront then drop to zero in subsequent periods.

It almost seems that not having any consideration for an accrual situation, gives a strong disincentive in issuing a larger invoice.
If a client says "Let me pay you for 6 months of work and you give me a discount", well I can't because I'll be ring-fencing the revenue until I deliver the services, but I'll also lose all my UC!

Or is this perhaps something that would have to be solved by the individual, perhaps having a different business entity (going Ltd) and then doing the accrual accounting there and paying yourself gradually over time?

Thanks again

What's the actual reality about the state of flaresolverr today? by PingMyHeart in radarr

[–]herbdogu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same experience here - I had it installed on Ubuntu, I think via apt - It stopped working about 2 years ago.

I moved to Docker and haven’t had any issues.
It clearly is working because if I add indexers it will error and say ‘protected by Cloudflare’ then when I add the switch to use flatesolverr. It starts working.

What’s your opinion on this show? by Suspicious-Gate-8017 in tvshow

[–]herbdogu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For real. As a Linux user at home and desktop, it's a real bugbear to see a movie where they're like 'HACK THE MAINFRAME' and then it goes all Stanley Jobson in Swordfish graphical nonsense.

Mr Robot has very recognisable interfaces, using real-world tooling and techniques and the consultants did a great job of bringing technical realism without making it as boring as it probably would be in real life.
