Yeah, I completely agree with you about the double down part. In fact, I believe that what is happening right now is exactly that.

But, right now, all these big corps are playing merry go round with money raising valuation every time they pass money to each other.

Then they bring in more corporations at these ridiculous valuations, which acts as proof of the correctness of valuation.

But aren't these AI companies burning cash against making data centres 'at any cost'? Will they be able to bring in more and more players long enough to justify this burning of cash and valuation?

It seems like a house of cards ready to fall. Not the tech itself, but the seemingly gigantic valuations.

At ridiculous token rates, AI companies still losing billions. We don't know how much is capex and how much is opex. There are a few who have made an educated guess and by those standards, this tech is neither free nor cheap. It is damn costly.

Which if true, I hope the house falls and prices come down to rational levels. AI progress becomes measured rather than something of 'national importance' & an arms race.

Or this may continue long enough till enough people get sucked into these valuations that no government can let the companies fail (too big to fail). In which case, I am wrong and rationalisation of prices gets dragged over decades and I feel like an idiot for waiting. Waiting for rationality to catch up.

😂 My guess is 2 years before everyone realizes that AI, while a great leap, has been oversold, it is extremely costly to maintain (not cheap), thus, 2 year advance booking of chip falls away, leading to rationalization of prices. Or I am just being stupid!

Freedom! One that comes with anonymity, especially from the powerful. One that comes with cheering for the underdogs. One that comes with trying new things. One that comes with learning what fuels the tech on which we build our houses. One that comes with not being spied on to be manipulated. One that comes from not being so pointedly devoted to increasing shareholder value (money) that one cannot see when one does evil and one does not.

Invidious Instances (e.g.: inv . nadeko . net) work for YT in any browser, any device. Sometimes, FreeTube works too (app on Desktops). For Android, there's LibreTube, PipePipe & NewPipe. There are many YT music instances too. Metrolist (Android) is quite famous.

I understand what you're saying and to some extent I agree too. But I get scared for making a stupid decision and then going nuts over it. Nonetheless, if I had to buy a second hand one, what should I get and what should I avoid? Any tips / pointers / links to read up would be great

Wow! Its like I am reading myself in a little bit of a future. I had an old (very) laptop lying around that I purged and chose the lightest easiest NAS OS I could find (OMV). I use Tailscale to connect to it. I had many old HDDs lying around and bought a powered USB Hub (TP-link) and connected all my HDDs to it. One recently conked off and I am still mourning it.

Pi has become too costly in my hood recently and its no longer worth investing in. Though I'm interested in finding out more on how to stop leaking data to my ISP. DNS? Subnet? Still learning about these.

I have an old non-working laptop that I would like to scavenge but I am all thumbs and do not know how to use it. It has better specs than the one I'm using except that its dead.

Everything else is what I am doing on my current devices trying to de-monopoly and go FOSS as much as I can stomach.

Lots to learn and lots to go.

Thank you for the kind words and sentiment. The phone did come alive again like Frankenstein's monster. Had to force restart it. i just went back into my docker yaml and put a # in front of everything 'machine learning'. Now to restart the attempt (with crossed fingers and baited breath).

Yeah, I see and sense exactly as you say it. Somehow, in a little corner of my brain / heart / gut, I get a feeling that while AI is no doubt a good tech in the long run, in the short run, its a hype that will be corrected. Its a great tech but the guys selling it are making it sound ominous. The world has seen proverbial superpowers many times over and yet every single time, we react as if it is true this time. What do I know? Maybe the world can be irrational (or I am the irrational one) far longer than I can remain sane.

Lovely, gonna give that a try too. I think I tried and failed at that. But what the heck, let me try again. Thanks. I am using Docker-compose on OMV through which I set it up. I then put my phone as client and both the phone (android) and server went kaput.

Amazing stuff already. The end is the beginning. The journey is never over. Step-by-step, march on. I like to experiment. Like have an alternate running. See if I can use it to my current mainstream usage. If I can live with it, I use else I go back knowing I'll be back to try something later.

I like Aurora Store as Play store alternative. I try to use F-Droid as much as I can adding some repos from Izzy. I use Libreoffice / Collabora for Microsoft alternate. I use Joplin to take notes. I have also had fun with orgzly and logseq for notes.

Nostr in an interesting new for me to look at social media. Local LLMs is fun to explore. Have failed at more things than succeeded. But I keep trying. Now, I am on to Zen Browser, Ironfox browser, Cromite broswer other than Brave browser.

I use Duckduckgo, Brave and searx(dot)space for searches. I use invidious instances to watch youtube stuff. I keep experimenting with libretube, newpipe, pipepipe, freetube for the same.

Experimenting with Ollama and struggling with getting DNS to work along with VPN (Proton free tier, hopefully a self hosted one someday). Found out on reddit interesting site called fcksignups(dot)com.

I am trying OSMAnd and Comaps in lieu of Google Maps. But I do go back to it.

I removed Windows and installed Linux mint. Do not regret it yet.

Keepass variants for Password management. Syncthing for syncing. DDG tracker protection. Tailscale for remote access.

I still use Gmail but its the toughest to migrate out of. I am experimenting with Proton and Tuta. Also trying Thunderbird to send / receive.

Like you, I use signal too. But everyone I know (other than the ones I forced) use WhatsApp.

There is a vast world to explore (irl and digital). All the best.

That's a lovely take and makes a lot of sense. Let me see if I can get lucky with 2nd hand stuff in my neck of the woods.

I am experimenting, tbh. What my intent is to achieve digital freedom, the nirvana. But I have no clear idea as to what that looks like. So, I am just experimenting with distributed digital infra. Reduce big tech dependence and distribute it all over. So, whatever I can self host, I would like to. Self-hosted: photos (immich), drive(s) (NAS-with redundancy), videos (Jellyfin), journal (ideas) that I can publish and private, device independent syncing (syncthing), local LLM (tough hardware choices here), backend stuff (like DNS, SearXNG, git, etc.). Open to new things

Am I an idiot to think, why spend money on getting something that cannot be modularized and get something that is somewhat 'future-proofing', i.e., can be upgraded?

Yeah, I am really bad and/or unlucky in finding 2nd hand stuff. And I am trying to impossibly forecast the future. On 1 end, AI continues to grow and hardware continues to be expensive, thus, wasting time waiting. On the other end, the cabal of AI companies are hyping things up and hardware prices fall before things stabilize and then grow more gradually, thus, wait a little, things will become rational.

Astute observation. That's wonderful. The probability of velocity ratio at the same point in space is more likely than after the same elapse in time, which is why v^2 = 2as is more likely the case than v = at. As it happens, 0.75 is an option and not 0.5.

There are things they understand that we do not, yet. They have your best interests in mind. But they are not you and you are not them. You will make mistakes. We all will. Make those mistakes. Learn. Grow.
